Fifth Herbalife Asia-Pacific Wellness Tour seeks to address health issues associated with sedentary lifestyles, and deepen practical understanding on the benefits of a healthy, active life.
PHILIPPINES, April 25, 2016 – Herbalife, a global nutrition company, has released the findings of the new Nutrition At Work Survey, which revealed that the majority of Philippines’ workforce leads largely sedentary lifestyles, putting them at risk of obesity. The Survey1, which was designed to understand the lifestyle habits and attitudes of Asia Pacific’s modern workforce, was conducted in March with 5,500 full-time workers in 11 Asia-Pacific markets, including 500 workers from the Philippines.
According to the survey findings, almost nine out of 10 (85%) workers in the Philippines spend at least six hours a day sitting at their desk, with 52% of its workforce eating lunch at their work desk two to five times per week. The survey also revealed that majority of Philippines’ workforce (86%) exercise less than three times per week, with five out of 10 getting less than 30 minutes of physical activity a day at their workplace. This suggests a significantly worrying trend locally, on the back of rising obesity rates recorded in recent years.
Nevertheless, the risk of obesity could be averted if workers in the Philippines decide to take control over their own nutritional intake and exercise regimen. Close to eight out of 10 workers(75%) affirmed that they strive to live a healthy, active life, however, the majority of them noted that they find it difficult to stay active during workdays.
“With a majority of Philippines’ workforce leading largely sedentary lifestyles, our mission as a global nutrition company is to help people in the Philippines take practical steps towards leading healthy, active lives.By inculcating positive nutrition and active lifestyle habits to people in the Philippines, we hope that this will, over time, help reduce obesity risks and lead to positive improvements to the well-being of our people,”said Mr. Rosalio Valenzuela, General Manager of Herbalife Philippines.
Aimed at addressing health issues associated with sedentary lifestyles, and deepening practical understanding on the benefits of healthy, active lifestyles, Herbalife launched its fifth Asia Pacific Wellness Tour 2016, held in the months of April and May. The latest edition of the Wellness Tour builds upon the successes of the past four tours that welcomed more than 80,000 participants across the region, and features a host of medical symposiums, talks and workshops led by seven experts from Herbalife’s Nutrition Advisory Board (NAB), covering 26 cities across Australia, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
Gary Small, M.D. has recently visited the country and shared his expert views on digital dementia and brain aging at the “A Smart Way to Healthy Aging: A Talk by Gary Small, M.D.” event.Dr. Small, a specialist in brain health and aging, has authored over 500 scientific works and received numerous awards and honors, including the "Senior Investigator Award" from the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry.
During the talk Dr. Small addressed health and nutrition related issues associated with sedentary lifestyles and share practical tips on how today’s workforce can live healthier lives by making simple changes to their daily lifestyles. Health and medical professionals, academics, as well as the general public have also engaged in lively dialogues with Dr. Smallat the event, and had the chance to network with like-minded professionals through the Herbalife Asia-Pacific Wellness Tour platform.
Rounding up the team of Herbalife NAB experts who have participated in the Asia-Pacific Wellness Tour are:
· Dr. David Heber, chairman of the Herbalife Nutrition Institute and Nutrition Advisory Board. A leading expert in the field of nutrition, named as one of “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds” by Thomson Reuters in 2014 and repeatedly included in “The Best Doctors in America”.

· Dr. Francis Gregory Samonte, one of the Philippines’ premier experts in pediatric neurology, and the first Filipino appointed to the NAB. He was a recipient of the Chairman’s Achievement Award from the University of Louisville, Kentucky’s Department of Pediatrics.
The NAB experts were also joined by Dr. Luigi Gratton, Herbalife’s vice president of nutrition education and development, who has written numerous articles on nutrition and obesity, and has appeared on television speaking on nutrition, anti-aging medicine, sports nutrition and other medical topics.
“With each new edition of the Wellness Tour, we are seeing an increasing number of people gain practical knowledge to lead better lives. We hope that that this year’s Tour will further empower people to take charge of their nutritional intake and exercise regimen, so that they can enjoy the full benefits of a healthy, active life,” Mr. Valenzuela concluded.
Herbalife’s Nutrition At Work Survey was conducted in March 2016, with 5,500 respondents aged 18 and above, from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

Care Goes Beyond Boundaries with Dr. Moopen’s Foundation
Dr. Moopen’s Foundation (DM Foundation), the organization set up by Aster DM Healthcare Chairman Dr. Azad Moopen, has once again proven that saving lives has no boundaries. In a unique multi-country charity initiative, a rare cardiac corrective surgery was successfully performed on Joneil Dasain, a 5-year-old boy from the Philippines at the Aster Medcity, Kochi. Conducted under the aegis of DM Foundation’s ‘Save the Little Hearts’ initiative, the surgery was carried out by a team of Indian specialists led by Dr. Sajan Koshy, Senior Consultant, Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, Center of Excellence in Cardiac Sciences, Aster Medcity, Kochi.
Indeed, the world becomes small when we reach out to care. The ‘Save the Little Hearts’ program has been helping indigent Filipino children with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) by providing free surgical treatment within the Aster DM Healthcare network. For the first time, a child coming straight from the Philippines is able to be flown to India for this much needed heart surgery at the world-class Aster Medcity.
“Joneil presented with bluish coloration of fingertips and lips and problems in breathing, all resulting from the congenital heart defect known as Tetralogy of Fallot. This should ideally have been corrected in the first year after birth. The procedure was not free from risk due to his age. But we decided to take up the challenge. The child was evaluated by our expert team of specialists and a five hour long surgery was successfully undertaken,” commented Dr. Sajan Koshy, Senior Consultant, Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, CoE Cardiac Sciences.
In Tetralogy of Fallot, abnormalities in the structure of the heart result in blood with insufficient oxygen circulating through the body causing the various symptoms like cyanosis (bluish discoloration) of nails, lips and skin, tiredness and breathlessness. If left untreated, the defect has a 50% mortality rate in the first three years of life in addition to causing delay in growth and development.
Since the program was started, the DM Foundation has helped 26 Filipino children from disadvantaged families, who cannot afford to have their children treated for congenital heart disease to undergo corrective cardiac surgery. In addition, about 750 children have benefited from the ‘Save the Little Hearts’ program across various geographies. These children, primarily from India, but also from Afghanistan and Africa have received free or subsidized treatment from Aster DM Healthcare facilities channelized through the DM Foundation and its associates including MIMS Charitable Trust and other support associations.
Dr. Azad Moopen, Founder Chairman & Managing Director of Aster DM Healthcare and Founder of DM Foundation, is a physician turned entrepreneur and philanthropist. During his early career, he had witnessed many families struggling to afford specialised treatment for many complex and critical health conditions. He founded the DM Foundation to help such patients and it is under this foundation that the not-for-profit initiatives of Aster DM Healthcare and Dr Azad Moopen’s family are being carried out.
Commenting on this unique initiative, Dr. Azad Moopen, said, “There are many children who are not able to reach their full potential because of congenital heart disease. Coming from poor backgrounds, the parents also cannot afford to have their children treated. The philosophy of our foundation is to provide quality healthcare to the deserving and make a difference in their lives. We are happy that DM Foundation has enabled Joneil to get the treatment to put him back on the path to a bright future. We look forward to helping more such children in the future through our efforts.”
Aster DM Healthcare-Philippines Country Head Joyce Alumno emphasized, “Five children are diagnosed with CHD for every 1,000 live births. Reports show that every nine minutes, a child below 15 years old dies of heart disease. We are grateful that through the selfless heart of Dr. Moopen and the expertise of our doctors in India, children like Joneil are given a chance to enjoy a quality of life like any normal child.”
“We want to do more. In fact, we have a line of possible beneficiaries needing urgent attention. However, we are unable to do so because of the long queue in the hospitals. With the success of Joneil’s case, we can now say, we can make this happen,” Alumno said.
Lance Masters, a Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Manila supported the DM Foundation and has accompanied the patient and his mother to India. He has documented Jolien’s journey to health on his Facebook page. He said, “Jolien’s free cardiac surgery has been possible thanks to a truly remarkable philanthropist, Dr Azad Moopen, who has designated 20% of his wealth to his charitable foundation dedicated to assisting poor people with catastrophic medical issues. In the Philippines, Dr. Moopen has committed to helping 50 indigent children with congenital heart defects through the DM Foundation’s ‘Save the Little Hearts’ program. I am honoured to work with the Foundation in this noble mission."
Dr. Harish Pillai, Cluster Head for Kerala & CEO Aster Medcity said, “The successful procedure is yet another testament of the exemplary skills of Aster Medcity’s talented team of doctors at our advanced world class quaternary healthcare facility. We are happy that the child is now recovering well and can look forward to lead a normal life.”
About DM Foundation
DM Foundation is the broad umbrella under which the CSR and social activities of Aster DM Healthcare and Dr. Moopen’s Family Foundation are being carried out. DM Foundation works in tandem with associate organizations such as MIMS Charitable Trust. MOMMY LOVES YOU JUST THE SAME, to be Published by the #1 Amazon Bestselling Author
For those who are expecting a new baby in the family or have just given birth to another child, you’ll surely love this new children’s book!
On May 19, 2016, #1 Amazon bestselling Author and Inspirational Speaker Teresa Gumap-as Dumadag will launch her first children’s book Mommy Loves You Just the Same. The author’s two older children inspired her to write the book while she was pregnant with her third child. It tells the heartwarming story of how an expectant mother assured her son of her unchanging love — during her pregnancy and after she gave birth to her new baby. It also shows how this mother’s assuring love inspired and enabled the little boy to become a loving and responsible big brother.
“Mommy Loves You Just the Same is a book for parents, and their children, who are anticipating a new baby. The story presents proactive ways to involve and prepare older siblings in the arrival of a new member in the family,” says Zarah Gagatiga, a children’s book author, storyteller, teacher librarian and a board member representing librarians of the Philippine Board on Books for Young People.
“The story reminds me of our own pregnancy experience with our youngest, Zoe and how we prepared our eldest, Nico, to being a big brother. They are siblings as well as good friends!” adds Gagatiga.
“Teresa's first children's book is a truly heartwarming read. Told in simple but meaningful words, the story of a mother's unconditional love for both her children is especially great for preparing kids to ‘welcome’ their younger siblings,” says Editor-in-Chief of Mustard Magazine (an educational magazine for kids) Tina Santiago Rodriguez, who is also a media missionary at TrulyRichandBlessed.com, a writer for Philstar.com and Smart Parenting Online and a mother of four.
“The illustrations help add to the ‘comforting’ feeling one gets when reading the story — my favorite is the one of Mommy tandem nursing her kids,” adds Santiago Rodriguez.
"I was looking for a book that I can use to repeatedly remind my two older children that I love them just the same even with the coming of their baby brother. Since I could not find one with exactly the same message, I composed a poem for them instead," Gumap-as Dumadag shares. "I drew inspiration from the things that my children did during my third pregnancy and what my eldest did for me and his younger brother after my second pregnancy.”
“I’m thankful that I met Jia Rubio-Monserrat in an event where I was one of the speakers. She did a great job in turning my vision into beautiful illustrations. She also helped me come up with coloring pages to reinforce the message and lessons that children can learn from the book,” the author adds.
Those who will buy a copy of Mommy Loves You Just the Same get free access to the printable coloring pages. The eBook can be purchased online through Hands-OnParentwhileEarning.com’s online shop, via email at teresa@fulllifecube.com or through the following Facebook Pages: Full Life Cube, Hands-On Parent while Earning or BREASTFEEDING: A Journey Worth Taking. Please like any of these pages to get updates on the virtual launch and the promos related to it.
The virtual book launch is organized by Full Life Cube Publishing and Events Services. It is also supported by Mom and Milly Educational Toys, My Little Ikbi, Moringana by Organics Asia, Gymboree, Zalor Maternal Care Massage Services and Halo Philippines.

Make the most of our time with our little ones before we say goodbye to summer
Summer is almost closing as June drums nearer. Our little ones spent almost two months at home, but have we really made most of our time with them? With the many things that we need to do at home and in the workplace, we often sacrifice time spent with our children. Most parents find vacation or summer time the best time to earn for a living to prepare for the upcoming school year. As the end of summer draws near, now is the best opportunity to start creating wonderful memories that they can look back to once the school starts. Whether you want to make up for the days you were too busy or simply cap off the summer on a good note, there’s still activities available for you and your kids to enjoy. Break free from the usual trips to the mall and try these five activities instead.
It is rare nowadays to see children not glued to their gadgets since we are now living in a world of video streaming and smartphones. Introduce them to other forms of entertainment like live theater. Just make sure that you choose a show that is child-friendly. Look for youthful and energetic productions that also teach golden values through the story. A good example of this is PETA’s MgaKuwento Ni Lola Basyang! The play is like a fairytale book that has come to life as Lola Basyang shares stories of magical spells, kings and their kingdoms. Without a doubt, you’ll enjoy it too!
Simple drawing, coloring and crafts-making are always a big hit with children, but you can make the experience even better by making art together. Producing these little artworks will be a creative experience for the both of you. Watch your kid’s eyes light up as you take this artsy journey as a pair. It will surely be an experience neither of you will forget.
Of course, a Pinoy family bonding option that never fails is music. Make your bonding experience emotionally enriching by asking your child what he wants to sing about, and composing a song together! You don’t even have to be musically inclined to try it out. Bring out your old guitar or even just a pen and some paper. The song may not be perfect but your little one will definitely associate it to the fun you had while writing it.
Cap off summer with a fun and learning experience for both parent and child. Join us at the PETA Theater Center and enjoy a fun-filled afternoon with your kids. Family passes are available for the MgaKuwento Ni Lola Basyang play and your workshop of choice. Book your tickets through Ticketworld (http://bit.ly/24tIu7w). You can also call (725) 6244 local 22-23 or (0916) 4868696 for reservations. #FamilyDayWithLolaBasyang #PETAFamilyDay
Watch a theater show!

Make your bonding activity an educational one too! There are
plenty of workshops available these days but pick ones that you can do together
as parent and child. This way, it’s not only you or your kid that gets to enjoy
the activity. Rather, you get a chance to do it together. Afterwards, you can
laugh at the little errors that you made, share the learning that you earned
and even display your output at home!
How about exploring the art of words with your little one?
Filipinos naturally love storytelling. Our rich folklore is a testimony to
that. There are also many ways that you can create and tell your own story.
This is a chance to let loose and be kid yourself too as you and your child
learn how to tell a story in the most animated way possible!
