More Convenient and Easy or Readily Accessible Daily Breakfast Motivates most Filipino Consumers

Herbalife Nutrition Asia Pacific Healthy Breakfast Survey, conducted in February this year with more than 5,500 respondents in 11 markets – including 500 from the Philippines; aims at uncovering insights into the attitudes and habits of eating breakfast among consumers in the region. 


The survey revealed that the majority of respondents understand the importance of a healthy breakfast in promoting their well-being and in managing their weight, however, many of them have encountered obstacles to eating it daily, and would be encouraged to eat it more regularly if it was more convenient and accessible.

Benefits of consuming breakfast

Based on the Herbalife Nutrition Asia Pacific Healthy Breakfast Survey, the majority (69 percent) of consumers in the Philippines consider breakfast extremely/very important, with 86 percent choosing it as the most important meal of the day. In comparison, only 11 percent opted for lunch and 2 percent for dinner. When asked about the benefits of consuming a healthy breakfast, 99 percent said that eating breakfast “gives them energy in the morning” while 96 percent felt that “it contributes to their personal well-being”.

Looking at the breakfast habits of consumers in the Philippines, the survey found that 84 percent do indeed make it a priority to eat their first and most important meal of the day at home, with 67 percent doing so within one to two hours of waking. The rest would just grab their breakfast either at work (10 percent) or on the way to work (4 percent). Only 2 percent of the respondents do not eat breakfast.


What are the consumers in the Philippines eating for breakfast?

The survey also showed that although 45 percent of respondents consider protein as the predominant nutrient needed in their breakfast, carbohydrates in fact made up most of the actual breakfast nutrients in the consumption pattern of the respondents. Carbohydrates such as bread or toast and hot beverages top the list of breakfast foods regularly consumed. 


Obstacles to a daily breakfast

While the survey indicated that a good majority are eating breakfast, it also found that many had encountered obstacles to eating it daily. The top three barriers are “lack of time” (44 percent), “don’t feel hungry in the morning” (30 percent) and “trying to maintain my weight” (18 percent).


To overcome these obstacles, 54 percent of the respondents said having “If my breakfast contributes to my health and well-being” and “If breakfast helps give me more energy” would help them eat breakfast daily, other motivation factors include making breakfast “readily accessible” (53 percent) or having something that is “more convenient and easy” (48 percent).

“It is heartening to see that most Asia Pacific consumers are aware of the importance of eating breakfast. At Herbalife Nutrition we believe that there are many benefits of eating a healthy breakfast daily. A healthy breakfast with balanced nutrition not only provides the much-needed nutrients for the day, but also has wide-ranging benefits in the long run, including supporting healthy metabolism, better brain health and improved weight management,” said Mr. Rosalio Valenzuela, Country Manager of Herbalife Nutrition Philippines.

“However, the survey also revealed that many are still not consuming breakfast daily. One can easily overcome the obstacles by waking up 15 minutes earlier to prepare something fast such as a protein shake. Eating a healthy breakfast regularly can really set the stage for healthier eating all day long, and promote and maintain a lifetime of wellness,” added Mr. Valenzuela.


According to the Herbalife Nutrition Philosophy, every meal consumed should have a calorie intake breakdown of 40 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent protein and 30 percent fats. Carbohydrates should include, at the very least, some fruits or vegetables.

KZ, TJ showcase superb musicality in Vivo V9 mall tour

Singer KZ Tandingan earned new fans with her powerful performances during her stint on China’s high-rating TV show, Singer 2018. Although she did not make it to the finals, KZ made a mark with the Chinese audience, cementing her title as Asia’s Soul Supreme.

Now back in the Philippines, KZ performed for her fans at the SM Mall of Asia on April 22, Sunday, to support the launch of Vivo’s newest flagship smartphone, the V9 with a 24-megapixel AI selfie camera and more. It was her first public performance in the Philippines following her appearance on Singer 2018.




KZ and TJ - Lovebirds do make great harmony


As the crowd roared in welcome, KZ belted out her signature hits like her cover of Lorde’s “Royals,” which she performed on Singer 2018, and Air Supply’s “Two Less Lonely People in the World.” She also sang her original songs, “Labo” and “Mahal Ko o Mahal Ako.”

Vivo Philippines Brand Director Annie Lim, meanwhile, expressed the global smartphone company’s continuous support for KZ.

“Like the rest of the Filipinos, we are very proud of KZ and her achievements on Singer 2018. She embodies the brand’s personality—young, trendy, and techie. We are very happy that someone as talented as her is part of the Vivo family,” she said.

“We can’t wait to see what she’s going to do next,” Lim added.

The event was even made more special since acoustic balladeer TJ Monteverde, KZ’s equally talented boyfriend and fellow Vivo endorser, performed for the event. He sang his own compositions, “Tulad Mo,” “Kahit Kunwari,” and “Ikaw at Ako.”

TJ also had nothing but praises for her girlfriend as she introduced her on stage and encouraged the mallgoers to cheer KZ on.

“KZ deserves a loud crowd,” he said.

After the pair answered questions from the press and gave away a brand new Vivo V9, they sang their hit duet, “Ikaw at Ako Pa Rin,” which made their fans overjoyed with kilig.

KZ and TJ then went around the Perfect Shot, Perfect View Vivo V9 mall tour experience booths and greeted Vivo V9 buyers and their fans after the program. The two also surprised mallgoers when they dropped by the Vivo kiosk at the SM Cyberzone.

KZ has been a proud Vivo endorser since September 2017. She has also been active in joining Vivo in its mall tours and activities since then. TJ, on the other hand, became a Vivo endorser since May 2017.

Jollibee opens its 3rd store in Canada

There are around 200,000 Filipinos living in Toronto, which accounts for around 3% of the city's overall population.

Most of these Pinoys and even the locals in Canada's east coast got excited when Jollibee, the largest Filipino multinational chain of fast food restaurants - opened its first store in the Greater Toronto Area in early April.

This exciting Easter treat was momentous as hundreds of Filipinos already camped-out in front of Jollibee Scarborough, located at 15 William Kitchen Road, on Saturday evening - hours before the grand opening - eager to step inside the store to savor a taste of home.

Jollibee Scarborough is the Filipino fast-food chain’s third store in Canada and the 40th store in North America. Here, residents can savor the crispylicious and juicylicious Jolly Crispy Chicken (more popularly known as Chickenjoy here in the Philippines), the tastiest and meatiest Jollibee Spaghetti, Palabok Fiesta, and the golden-brown Peach Mango Pie, among other langhap-sarap treats.

No less than Jollibee welcomed Filipinos to the store, including its very first customer, Paul, who looked forward to enjoying the Jolly Crispy Chicken for the first time in six years.

Crate & Barrel gives back to the community

Everyday is Playday this Summer at SM Supermalls

SM City North EDSA, along with 17 other malls, is bringing back "Everyday is Playday" to celebrate all play, all fun, all day for kids and the whole family; making SM Supermalls a venue for everything play.


During the next months, more than 20 global brands will be launching their latest toy collections in SM City North EDSA. Likewise, more than 60 characters and brands such as Spongebob, Shimmer and Shine, Beyblade, Hasbro Gaming, and Shopkins will tour all the 18 malls in a series of exciting shows and meet and greet sessions.

This year's campaign is set to be much bigger and stronger with the growing partnership with Sony Playstation, that will bring fun and exciting technology in our days of play, Fujifilm Instax, which will capture the best and fun memories from kids to kids at heart, and Pay Maya and Globe Gcash that will offer 30% rebate on loyal customers who wants to avail their favorite toys through mobile payment.


Shimmer and Shine, Beyblade, and Hasbro Gaming lead the way this year.

Kicking off the campaign is the launch of the new Shimmer and Shine toy collection at the Block Atrium at SM City North EDSA on May 5 - 6. This top rating Nickelodeon show is about a twin genies-in-training who grants wishes to their human friend Leah. It highlights the importance of teamwork, resilience and overcoming obstacles. This is a show that our little girls will surely wouldn't want to miss.

90's kids will enjoy the huge comeback of Beyblade, on August 31 - September 2 at the Annex Activity Area at SM City North EDSA. It is known in Japan as Explosive Shoot Beyblade, a Japanese manga series, written and illustrated by Takao Aoki, to promote sales of this spinning tops called "Beyblades." After the success of Beyblade Championship Tournament in SM City North EDSA the Annex early this year, wherein the winner will be sent to Japan this April to compete in the Asian Championship. This upcoming second leg's winner will be sent to compete in the World Beyblade Competition in Paris, France.

National Swap Meet 2 : the best place for collectors and hobbyists of all ages

There are usually 4 types of audience in an event.

First, of course, are the Kids ages 4 - 12. They are the type of audience who are easily influenced by the media. They buy according to what they see on tv, on the internet, magazines or what they hear over the radio. They actually have the greatest convincing power, but that power is still dependent on the parents.

Second are teens 13 - 20 years old. This type of audience can already decide on their own and they buy items based on their area of interest and own preference. They are also not too dependent on the parents as they already know how to save money for the toys they want, from Php500.00 up to php1,500.00

The third type is the Yuppies or Collectors aged 21 - 30. They are the type who already have the spending power because most of them already have a job or they already know how to earn money out of their own ability. They buy real collectible items and considers quality and legitimacy. They can also spend as much as P1,500.00 up to php5,000; sometimes even more.

Fourth is the Adults or Professional collectors. These people can buy rare finds whose prices are higher than any other items for sale. They can buy for themselves or even for other people and they can easily spend above Php5,000.

Last April 13 -15, 2018 all these types of audience gathered together at the 2nd National Swap Meet : For Collectors, By Collectors held in Megatrade Hall 1, SM Megamall. The event once more, featured more than 50 brand participants and around a hundred booths with a vast display of various collectibles like toys, action figures, antiques, vintage items, books, prints, merchandise and a lot of unique finds that collectors and hobbyists of all ages can purchase, swap or auction. 

There was also beauty finds such as products from Diana Stalder for the men and women who are fans of skincare. Beauty and skincare products are also worth collecting, right?The GSM Blue and Primera Brandy booth - Bar 1834 - which offered overflowing alcoholic drinks for the adults was also something that oenophiles, aficionados, and connoisseurs, would be interested in.

There was also an auction where the audience can bid for as low as P1.00! Just like the first National Swap Meet, an exciting program of activities and entertainment were provided to everyone such as, fun and games, various talks and panel discussions which provided gainful information and new ideas in the world of collecting as a hobby; as well as live performances.




Diana Stalder, a brand offering a wide range of beauty and skincare products and services, also supported the National Swap meet 2. 


The event becomes an ideal rendezvous for collectors meeting other collectors of similar interests, for the second time. The event catered to all types of audience and spectators as there were right items for everyone's interest. I personally saw how visitors got curious and excited about what's in store for them, and they end up happy swappers and shoppers. 


The event is not just an avenue to create camaraderie to all types and kinds of collectors but it also became a place to show support to our fellows with special needs. Since toys are a visual item for children that can be a bridge or a way for children to communicate with each other regardless of any disabilities, organizers of the event chose Link Center for the Deaf as the beneficiary and will receive a portion of the proceeds from the auctions.

Link Center for the Deaf delivers an integrated support program and provide scholarships to underprivileged deaf children, their teachers, and parents. They forge partnerships and linkages and provide relevant information to advocate for support and active participation of individuals and organizations in the empowerment and integration of deaf people in the community.

The National Swap Meet 2 was indeed the perfect weekend bonding place for the whole family. Everybody got to enjoy the experience and their eyes feasted on a lot of new and rare finds, plus they somehow helped their fellow Filipinos in need in their own ways.
