The Medical City launches Center for Kidney Health and Transplantation to serve more people with renal problems

June is National Kidney Month in the Philippines so before this month ends, let me share few facts about our KIDNEYS.

► The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs in the renal system. 

► The kidneys' major function is to remove waste products and excess fluid from the body. 
► These waste products and excess fluid are removed through the urine.
► 10 % of the world’s population has some form of kidney disease.
► Around 25,000 Filipino patients start dialysis treatment yearly.



In observance of the National Kidney Month, the leading tertiary medical services provider, The Medical City (TMC) launched the Center for Kidney Health and Transplantation (CKHT) as its response to the increasing health problems brought about by kidney disease in the Philippines.

According to Dr. Roberto Tanchanco, M.D., Head of the Section of Department of Nephrology at TMC, kidney disease continues to be a heavy burden for patients and the society. He said that every year, more than 30,000 Filipinos develop end-stage renal disease that needs either transplantation or dialysis.


He likewise pointed out that dialysis procedures accounted for the most number of health claims filed with the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. or PhilHealth in 2014. Since that year, dialysis remained to be among the top procedures with filed claims, with diabetes being the most common cause of end-stage renal disease, followed by hypertension.

“The Center shows our commitment to help reduce the rising incidence and burden of kidney disease. We set up the center where all the services pertinent to the delivery of high-quality renal service may be availed of by all our patients,” Dr. Tanchanco said during the launch of CKHT.

The Center, according to Dr. Tanchanco, is a collaborative effort led by the Adult Nephrology Section of the Department of Medicine, the Pediatric Nephrology Section of the Department of Pediatrics, and the Urology Section of the Department of Surgery. The team is composed of various health-care professionals that include, aside from nephrologists and urologists, fellows in training, residents, interns and clerks, dialysis nurses and technicians, nutritionists, pharmacists, and social workers.


“We proceed in the spirit of teamwork. We believe more things are accomplished when people from different fields bring together their expertise and perspective to achieve a common goal, which is to care for the health of patients at risk of, or already have, kidney disease,” Dr. Tanchanco emphasized in his speech.

“Kidney disease is a silent killer. Anyone can definitely get kidney disease anytime,” he added.

The Medical City has always been a pioneering and leading center for renal care in the country, founded by the late Dr. Filoteo Alano, also the founding president of the Philippine Society of Nephrology. Currently, TMC is the only medical facility in the country that automatically reports Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR), the test used to check how well the kidneys are working, based on the combination of Creatinine and Cystatin C, which is more accurate than GFR based on Creatinine alone.




The center offers the following services: Assessment of Kidney Function, Difficult to Treat Hypertension, Chronic Kidney Disease Nutrition Management and Counselling, Treatment and Management of Acute Kidney Injury, and Renal Replacement Therapy which includes Hemodialysis, Hemodiafiltration (HDF), Peritoneal Dialysis and Kidney Transplant.

One Night Food Trip Season 2 features Korean Heartthrobs and Pinay Celebs for a crazy 48-hr culinary frenzy

tvN Asia, a Korean-language entertainment channel is featuring K-Pop’s hottest idols, Nichkhun of boyband 2PM and actor-host Alexander “Xander” Lee back-to-back with celebrity cousins Danica Sotto-Pingris and Ciara Sotto for the second season of Asia's craziest food contest, One Night Food Trip.

The K-pop heartthrobs will face off against the celebrity cousins on a wild 48-hour gastronomic frenzy tour around the Philippines. One Night Food Trip – International Edition will fly exclusively with Cebu Pacific for the entire second season. 


Based on popular Korean food competition show One Night Food Trip, the international edition adds a twist by having K-pop celebrities travel to various Asian destination including the Philippines, Taiwan, South Korea, and Malaysia where they eat, play, and compete against local celebrities. Each team must complete missions involving exotic flavors and cultural attractions to earn stamps. The team that collects the most stamps within 48 hours takes home the Golden Passport.

In the Philippine segment of the show, Nichkhun and Xander jet-set together from Cebu to Pampanga, while celebrity chef Danica and singer-actress Ciara take a separate route from Coron to Legazpi for a unique experience of the country’s sights and delicacies. One of their stops is at luxury integrated resort City of Dreams Manila where they explore the Forbes five-star hotel, NÜWA, try out decadent dishes at the award-winning Crystal Dragon restaurant, and immerse in the DreamWorks-inspired interactive play space called DreamPlay.


The four-episode Philippine segment on Season 2 airs on 30 July (Monday) at 18:30 (GMT+8). It is in partnership with the Tourism Promotions Board, an attached agency of the Department of Tourism, that markets and promotes the Philippines domestically and internationally as a world-class tourism destination.

Aside from 2PM, Nichkhun is also a songwriter, actor and model, with television and film projects in South Korea and China. On the other hand, Xander Lee is a former member of the South Korean boy band U-KISS. From the Philippines, Danica Sotto-Pingris is a television host and celebrity chef, with a degree in Culinary Arts and Technology Management from the Center for Culinary Arts Manila. Her cousin, Ciara Sotto, is a television host, singer, actress and expert pole dancer. She regularly teaches pole dancing classes in Manila.

Mega Tuna creates a bonding experience with Liza Soberano

Hanging out with your barkada can be a more fun bonding experience with great food and Liza Soberano.

To make this a reality for more barkadas in Metro and Mega Manila, Mega Tuna recently rolled out two exciting contests throughout the month of April that gave consumers the opportunity to hang out with Mega Tuna ambassador, Liza Soberano. At the same time, it was a good opportunity to share their creative culinary talent. The contest is to promote “sarap ng tunay” na bonding moments with your barkada while they recreate dishes that they love to share with each other using Mega Tuna.


Three groups emerged as winners in the contest, which required the barkada to create a video of themselves preparing creative dishes using Mega Tuna’s products. These videos were then posted on social media, where people had the chance to try out the delicious dishes that they had created.

Topping the list is “Mega Tuna Forever,” a cheesy Mega Tuna-stuffed pepper made by the group of Petruse Salagubang, Donabelle Salagubang, Kathleen Guevarra. The barkada shared that one of them was an excellent cook. “Meron kaming dish na feeling namin is something unique and kayang manalo,” said Petruse, noting that Mega Tuna is “pure meat and hindi nag-iiba ang quality.”

Another winner is the “Happy Chikis Squad,” a yummy sisig made of Mega Tuna. The dish is the creation of Raymard Bacolod, CA Pinili, Patricia Fabria, Nelaine Cleofe, Michael Mendoza. The team members said that sisig is their favorite, and that they cook it every week. When they heard about the contest, they decided to do the video right away, not only because they were excited to meet Liza, but also because Mega Tuna is a juicy ingredient that is perfect for the dish they were making. “Biglaan lang po talaga, nag dala lang po ako ng ring light, tapos yun po nag video lang kami. Yung concept namin medyo comedy, and natural talaga siya," related Raymard.


Also garnering a prize was a group of friends that created a deep-fried sandwich made by Rennan Laguardia, Dean Marco Yerro, Argie Tepace, Melanie Rubio. "We want to try our capabilities in making a recipe para sa barkada namin," explained Rennan, who used to work as a waiter and knew what customers liked. Mega Tuna was a perfect addition to the sandwich, he said. Masarap siya, hindi siya katulad ng ibang brands na sobrang alat. Tamang tama lang yung lasa niya, at hindi siya mamantika"

The winning barkadas happily bonded with their idol, Liza Soberano, who played games, sang songs and posed for selfies with them. They also received gift packs containing Mega Tuna products, a Mega Tuna glass lock, a phone grip, and gift certificates that they shared not only with the barkada, but also with their families.
Running simultaneously was the Mega Tuna Hang-Out, wherein participants created their very own do-it-yourself dishes using available ingredients at special Mega Tuna booths in selected supermarkets. Excited consumers showcased their cooking skills at the booths, then took photos of their creations which they posted on social media with the hashtag #MegaHangOutWithLizaSoberano.

“Meeting all these talented barkadas was fun! It was a mega barkada bonding experience for all of us I learned a lot from their ideas on how Mega Tuna can be used to create healthy dishes. The dishes they created using Mega Tuna were all delicious and healthy too. I look forward to making these dishes myself,” concluded Liza.

Shopee Celebrates Beauty and Women Empowerment with a Beauty Fair Sale

The singer tuned actreess talked about numerous topics from haircare to fitness. and how her journey with maintaining her health has helped her confidence and enabled her to achieve success in both her career and personal life.



2013 Miss World Megan Young as a speaker at the event, shared her journey to being crowned 2013 Miss World and how the title has since placed her in a position to inspire young women around her.

"Joining Miss World 5 years ago really took me out of my comfort zone and challenged me to be more confident. After being crowned, I realized I was in a position where I had the power to influence young women, and I wanted to do my part to encourage them to stand up for themselves. I used to just shrug off people who say insensitive or hurtful comments, but now call them out and tell them they're wrong, and I encourage all women to not be afraid to do the same," shared Young.

“Safeguard: Pabaon sa Buhay" a Tribute to Norman King's Success

When Norman King made history as the first Aeta to graduate from a premier state university in the Philippines, his story became a beacon of inspiration. 3 Ways to Help Your Child Who Stutters

If you have recently noticed that your child tends to stutter when speaking, don’t be alarmed. Most often this is a temporary condition which improves naturally with age. Typically, children between the ages of two and five may have a short period of time when they seem to stammer or stutter, but it is usually short-lived because they are simply ‘killing time’ vocally while looking for the right word. Remember, this is the time when kids begin to develop their language skills. If you feel that this is more than a temporary situation and are looking for way to help your child overcome stuttering, here are three ways you can help.


1. Don’t Be Alarmed

The one thing you should do is not be alarmed if you notice your child stammering. It helps to know that more than three million Americans stutter, some mildly and some severely. However, for the most part, kids will outgrow this phase in language development and few will carry stuttering forward into adulthood. It is also important to understand that stress is one of the leading causes of stuttering in adults, so if you are alarmed and your child picks up on it, you could be stressing them to the point of exacerbating the situation. Be calm and patient and only ask them to repeat what they were trying to say if you really can’t understand them. Yes, you can work with them to slow down their speaking patterns but stressing them is never good.

2. Utilize Tools to Help Them Stutter Less

Since we are living in the age of the computer and the Information Highway (Web), why not look for an app that makes you stutter less? Of course, this is not something you would use with younger, pre-school children, but it is a handy tool to use with older kids. For younger kids, try singing with them. Speech therapists often start by singing with kids and then working down to a monotone. Music is controlled in the right hemisphere of the brain and so the brain can learn to reroute speech to new areas, which enable the stutterer to speak almost stutter-free. This type of therapy is usually utilized when there is neurological damage to the left hemisphere, only scientists really don’t know how or why this is.

3. Contact a Speech Therapist If Necessary


As your child grows older and the stuttering doesn’t improve, you may want to consider consulting with a speech therapist. These professionals have been trained in working with kids who stutter and are best able to use proven techniques that help. From working with right-brain activities to helping them focus on what they want to say before opening their mouth to speak, therapists can often accomplish what parents are ill-equipped to deal with.

Remember, above all stay calm! Children pick up on their parents’ emotions and that can trigger a heightened stuttering event. They want to please you and quickly sense your frustration, which can have devastating events on both stuttering and their ability to recover. Most often stuttering in children is temporary, so take heart in this and go slowly when working with your child. As the old adage goes, “Easy does it.”

Tanduay, Rum Brand that adds Pride to the Filipino Nation

What makes you proud to be Pinoy? In my generation, the first that comes to mind are - Pia Wurtzbach, Manny Pacquiao, Liza Soberano, Azkals, and Michael Martinez. They are only a few of the very famous people nowadays in the field of beauty, entertainment, and sports who have brought and are still bringing pride to the Filipino nation in the international scene.


It was such a surprise to me to know that for the first time, a local liquor brand is also making a big scene in the international market and has been ranked the top-selling rum by global spirits think tank Drinks International. Tanduay, a Philippine-made liquor brand has taken over the number one spot from a list of international rum brands that has long been dominated by Bacardi. 

Drinks International has released the “definitive ranking of the world’s million-case rum brands”, citing Tanduay as the new industry leader followed by Bacardi and McDowell’s No. 1 Celebration. 


“Our distinctly Filipino rum is now the world’s number one…We have a great product to offer the world and the world recognized it,” said Lucio “Bong” K. Tan, Jr., president and chief executive officer of Tanduay Distillers, Inc.

Tan Jr., who actively took the helm the as chief operating officer of the company in 2014, has been credited for the disruptive changes within the company that led to explorations of new markets abroad and new market approaches locally to bring the brand closer to younger product consumers.


“Only a visionary like my father, Dr. Lucio Tan, saw this when he acquired Tanduay from the Elizaldes in 1988. At a time considered very volatile for any business investment in the country, my father held on to the belief that someday the world will know Tanduay,” added Tan Jr.

Since the acquisition of the Tanduay brand by the Lucio Tan group 30 years ago, plant modernization and expansion projects tremendously increased the distillery’s production capacity. Today, Tanduay has an unmatched aging capability harvesting only the world’s finest from its aged rum reserve. All facilities operate based on ISO standards ensuring consumers of quality, efficiency, and food safety. Recently, its Cabuyao plant has completed its ISO-9001: 2015 certification.

Through the hands-on leadership of Tan Jr., the company made a historic expansion in the world arena. Tanduay made a strategic alliance with companies in the United States to expand its distribution capacity.


According to Paul Lim, chief marketing officer of Tanduay, the company embarked on a brand refresh since the younger Tan took over.

“We were the first to implement a nationwide music marketing campaign that brought Tanduay to a younger market. We were also the first local liquor brand to sponsor an NBA Team – the Golden State Warriors. We continue to push further as we ride along an ever changing market landscape now dominated by health-conscious, athleisure-loving millennials with the launch of Tanduay Athletics and a sponsorship of the Century Tuna Superbods. Both projects contributing a premium to Tanduay’s brand equity,” he related, citing some of the marketing innovations that led to Tanduay becoming the world’s number one rum.
