The Philippines' First Economic History Museum: Tanduay's Historic Birthplace

The Museum of Philippine Economic History has officially opened its doors, marking a significant addition to Iloilo's cultural landscape. Situated in the historic Ynchausti Commercial House on Calle Real, this museum is housed in a building steeped in history, once home to the company that would eventually give rise to Tanduay, the world-renowned rhum brand.

Prior to its transformation into a museum by the National Historical Commission, the building served as the provincial offices for the Commission on Audit. For many years, it was widely recognized as the Elizalde building, reflecting its long-standing connection to the Elizalde family.

The roots of this remarkable structure trace back to 1854 when it served as the headquarters for Ynchausti y Compania (also known as Ynchausti y Cia). The company was founded by Basque entrepreneurs José Joaquin Ynchausti, Joaquin Elizalde, and Valentin Teus, who pooled their resources, including Tanduay, to establish a formidable commercial entity. After the Elizaldes acquired the Ynchausti shares in 1934, they rebranded the company as Elizalde Y Cia.

The museum not only provides rich historical insights but also showcases an impressive collection of artifacts from Iloilo’s thriving industries, particularly the sugar sector. The Tanduay Distillery, one of the oldest companies in the Philippines, is prominently featured, highlighting its significant role in the sugarcane economy. Among the exhibits are a vintage Tanduay dama juana, early advertising materials, tools from Western Visayas’ sugar plantations, looms from Miagao’s oldest weavers, and t’nalak cloth from South Cotabato, among other treasures.

The architectural design of the Ynchausti Commercial House, built in 1905, is an apt setting for these artifacts. It embodies the typical Spanish colonial bahay-na-bato style, characterized by solid red-brick walls on the ground floor and wooden panels above. The wide Capiz-shell windows are a distinctive feature that echoes the elegance of traditional Filipino architecture.

Lucio K. Tan, Jr., the president and chief operating officer of Tanduay Distillers, expressed the importance of preserving the brand's legacy. “Tanduay has a rich history that started in the island of Negros. As we celebrate the 165th anniversary of Tanduay Distillers this year, we want to ensure that Tanduay is remembered, especially by future generations of Filipinos,” he stated.

In line with its anniversary celebrations, the Lucio Tan Group has initiated plans to convert its distillery in Manila into a dedicated Tanduay Museum. This new museum aims to celebrate the company’s vibrant history while providing visitors with a multi-sensory experience that illustrates the production of its renowned products.

“The Tanduay Museum will be located at our old office in Quiapo, where Ynchausti Y Cia operated their liquor facility. We plan to restore part of the original building; however, as it will be a brand museum, visitors can expect a modern façade and the use of cutting-edge technology, akin to the world’s contemporary museums,” Tan Jr. added.

The opening of the Museum of Philippine Economic History and the future establishment of the Tanduay Museum reflect a growing recognition of the importance of preserving and showcasing the rich economic heritage of the Philippines, ensuring that these stories resonate with both locals and tourists alike.

Why am I making a Switch to Naturals by Watsons?

A lot of synthetic and harmful ingredients are used in beauty and skin care products nowadays. We are not aware but we are exposing our bodies and the environment to an onslaught of unnatural, toxic chemicals.

Having realized how harmful those synthetic chemical additives are to every living organism on earth, I am making a switch to safer and more natural products to give me beauty without the risk. I am glad that Watsons organic and natural products are now exploding on the beauty market such as the Naturals by Watsons.

Naturals by Watsons is Watsons - Asia's leading health and beauty retailer - line of natural hair, body and skin care goodies such as hair shampoo and conditioner, cream bath, hair and scalp tonic and more.

Here are the reasons why I now choose Naturals by Watson as my daily beauty and hygiene essential:

► Active ingredients

Organic Argan Oil, Natural Argan Seed Extract, Organic Avocado Oil, Organic Wheat Germ Extract

All these natural and organic ingredients are essential to effectively nourish and protect our hair and skin.

► Hypo-allergenic

Since Naturals by Watsons does not contain harmful or toxic chemicals and is free from Paraben, Mineral Oil, Silicones, Colourants, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Soap, Isothiazolinone (MIT, CMIT, BIT); it does not cause irritation and is suited for sensitive skin. Even though it is possible to be allergic to some natural ingredients, it is easier to know which ingredients may cause the reaction.

► Safe

Studies have proven that some chemicals found in skin care products can be absorbed into the bloodstream and can cause a lot of health issues including skin problems, hormones disruption, degenerative diseases, and even cancer. So beware what you put on to your skin, only trust safe skincare products that are made from natural and organic ingredients.

► Social Responsibility

Synthetics on beauty products are not only harmful to our health but they also harm the planet. The chemicals that are present in most beauty and skincare products are polluting the water and cause trouble to the marine environment and our water sources. By choosing organic, we don't only take care of ourselves, but the environment and the planet as well, for the benefit of the next generations.

Lastly, I believe that the relationship between nature and humans is profoundly important. Nature should be our primary source for everything we need to thrive on Earth because nature is the key to a more meaningful life and natural products are the safest and the most effective way of nourishing our body holistically.

I have tried two of Naturals by Watsons products which are the Conditioner and Cream Bath. Both products smell so natural that you will imagine a green rice field, a lush green forest or a place where everything smells fresh; while using them. Both have no overpowering smell of perfume, has no colorants; making sure that they are skin and hair-friendly. The natural scent of the conditioner lingers on the hair for hours and stays even if you're under the heat of the sun or you're exposed to strong wind. I have been using the conditioner for more than a week now and everyday I notice that it makes my hair softer and more manageable - easy to comb and style. The conditioner even made my hair a bit straighter as the frizziness was reduced.

The Cream Bath is nice on the skin. It does not leave a very strong smell on the skin. I have a sensitive skin and some soaps or cream baths either trigger my skin to be more sensitive which causes redness, itchiness, and rashes or make my skin dry and scaly. But with the Naturals by Watsons Cream Bath, I never had any skin problem. I also find it economical because just a few amounts produce enough lather.

I hope to try more products from the line. I think I found my match for skin and hair care products that will not compromise my well-being.

How about you, what do you think are the upside and the downside of natural and organic products for the hair and skin? Which one do you prefer more and why?

Casa Moriones - Top Caterer in Laguna

This is the first time I have discovered a caterer near our place. Been living in Laguna for 13 years but whenever I would look for a nice catering service I could only find them mostly in Metro Manila. Gladly I joined the 3rd United Bloggers Philippines Thanksgiving party where Casa Moriones provided our food for the day from pastries to soup, pasta, and the main course.

I fell in love with the Bread Station - it's very artistic and everything made me drool

They served a vast variety of pastries such as macarons, donuts, the swan-shaped bread with icing on top, croissant, and the pizza-like bread which is my kids' favorite.

Garlic Bread is superb =)

In the buffet table, they had Pumpkin Soup, Fettucine Alfredo, Roast Beef with Gravy and Roast Pork Asado. They are all mouth-watering. I love the roast beef for its tenderness and being flavourful. I love the combination of different flavors from the Roast Pork, they explode inside the mouth. They prepared Buco Pandan for dessert, and that is one of the best - fresh, creamy with the right amount of sweetness. I can't remember how many cups I consumed, but it's more than 5.

I can still remember the taste of the gravy, as if it lingered in my mouth until now

They also did the table and chair setting. They made it simply yet beautiful and perfectly represents what the event is all about. The theme was Rustic combined with tropical accents.

Casa Moriones operates in Metro Manila and CALABARZON area for over 20 years now. They have well trained and veteran servers who assure the smooth operation of any event. Their goal is to provide the most reasonable price without sacrificing the quality of  the service and food they serve.

Casa Moriones don't just strive to make the party a memorable event, but they also ensure that the food they serve is of the best quality made with the freshest ingredients by employing nutritionists.

They treat each item on our menu like an artistic masterpiece and they work very professional so you can expect the presentation to be elegant and priceless, and the taste is fabulously unforgettable.

Casa Moriones caters within Laguna, Tagaytay, Batangas, Cavite, and Alabang Area.

Ortigas & Company opens 2nd Ortigas Art Festival to the public

Right in time for the celebration of National Art Month, Ortigas & Company launched the 10-day Ortigas Art Festival to assert their commitment to bringing arts and culture closer to the people.

Now on its second year, the exhibit continues to put its efforts towards establishing Estancia as the art hub of Ortigas. This year’s approach brought individual artists to the spotlight, showcasing their creative individuality and placing them at the forefront of the art scene.

It was the idea of Renato Habulan, renowned social realist painter, to tap the various groups of artists from all over the country and give them a venue to exhibit their works. Ortigas Malls was receptive to the idea of promoting grassroots participation in the art scene.

No gallery representation – just artists working together; no admission charge for the viewers – walk through the art for free.

Among the featured artists is master engraver Benjie Torrado Cabrera, the only engraver in the country specializing in this laborious, centuries-old medium. His works, which are complex in detail, are inspired by his interest in cosmology, with geometric shapes and spheres that signify the universe.

Another one to look out for is Darwin “Japat” Guevarra, a self-taught artist inspired by the works of masters and his peers, showcases works that reflect his concepts of life and social realism, expressed through his mastery of the paintbrush, sculpting, photography, and experimenting with scrap and molded materials.

Also in the spotlight is photographer Bern Wong, with her camera that has captured the most moving meditative and breathtaking landscapes she has seen encountered in her travels. Her works express the minimal, abstract, and even the surreal aspects of places she visits.

Make sure to check out the works of Richard Buxani, an architect who has since harnessed his talent to create sculptures made out of metal. Inspired by Ronald Castrillo, Richard discovered a natural fondness for bending, crafting, cutting, welding and molding materials – which will be showcased at the art festival.

Also joining the art festival are artists from all over the country, whose works mirror the great talent of Filipino artists. The roster includes AgawXena, Agos Kulay Maynila, Banta Artist Initiative, Himbon, Biskeg, The Guild, Group Artists of Taytay, Association of Pinoy Printmakers, Hilaga, and Westgrove Fine Arts.

To create a more interactive and immersive art experience, various activities have also been lined up, which visitors can join for free. On February 23, master engraver Benjamin Cabrera shows his prowess in print-making. For those interested in watercolors, watercolor artist Peter Sutcliffe will hold tutorials on February 24 and March 2. On March 3, Renato Habulan introduces guests to Print Alla Prima with the Master. Throughout the festival, the public is also encouraged to participate through the “Comment Areas” where they can share their thoughts and opinions to let the artists know how their works are perceived.

The rapidly-evolving festival has already grabbed the attention of various artists from across the globe, including some from New York, Los Angeles, and Singapore who want to become part of this movement-- a sign that bigger and better things will come about in the coming years for Ortigas Art Festival.

"Ortigas & Company is delighted to see that support for contemporary Philippine art has been growing. As part of our commitment to the arts, we are holding the second run of this art festival in the hope that this will increase appreciation for the creative individuality of artists. By holding this in Estancia, we are also making art accessible to Filipinos, especially for our mall patrons and the Capitol Commons community,” concluded Arch. Renee Bacani, VP of Ortigas & Company.

For updates and more information on the Ortigas Art Festival, connect through its Instagram
and Facebook page and use the hashtag #OrtigasArtFestival.

Teodorico "Nonong" Haresco Jr shares his Platform on Infrastructure, Health and Livelihood

When I first met Cong. Haresco, he was a bit quiet, medyo tipid magsalita. Maybe because during the first time I met him, medyo madami syang appointments because that was Christmas season. This time, I met a different Cong. Haresco. He looks cool, parang walang kaproble-problema at all, despite the fact na malapit na ang kampayahan.

Cong. Haresco is running for Congressman this May 2019 elections in the 2nd District of Aklan. I am not campaigning for him but I just want others to see how important are his platform not just to his province but to the whole country as well because if he wins, he will be serving as one of the lawmakers of this country. Lawmakers are the people we depend on to bring public service much closer and much rewarding for the citizen especially to those really in need.

For me, a good platform includes no "too good to be true" promises. A platform should be concrete, feasible and possible. A good platform is not just attractive because of educational attainment and awards received by the person. A good platform should be positive and it should drive participation from people to people.

Nonong Haresco's platform is focused on important aspects on the daily lives of every Pinoy. It is geared towards infrastructure, health, and livelihood.

Dahil Panalo tayo sa Imprastraktura!

Nonong understands very well how important is an efficient and strong infrastructure. Infrastructure is really important for economic growth. Infrastructure makes it easier to engage in economic activity. But while it is good to build, build, build; we should also examine how this will affect others especially the people at the bottom of "the pyramid".

Just like the proposal to build a 1.9km bridge to link Bocaray and Caticlan. It is something that Nonong is not in favor of because it will kill micro-entrepreneurship and community-based businesses. In this case, I also believe that the risks outweigh the benefits.

Dahil Panalo tayo sa Kalusugan!

Nonong understands how hard it is for some families to pay their hospital bills because he had been in that situation where he can't even pay the bill after a gall bladder operation.

Now that the Universal Health Care is already a law, I firmly believe that despite the lack of funds; this law will provide a lot of benefits to the needy with someone like Haresco in the Congress.

Dahil Panalo tayo sa Kabuhayan!

Nonong has long been an advocate of micro-entrepreneurship. Being a microentrepreneur at a young age, he always believes that Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are crucial for the economic growth and stability of any country and play a vital role especially for developing countries as they facilitate economic activity and provide employment thus contributing to poverty reduction.

So apart from the many bills he authored and co-authored to strengthen and empower the MSMEs sector in the country, he wants to monitor BSP lending practices. The BSP has allocated 9% loanable amount to MSMEs but only around 0.01% is given to them. The fact is, a large amount goes to the conglomerate owned by big companies.

SM Aura Premier and NCCA Celebrates Francisco V. Coching's 100th thru an Art Exhibit

Francisco V. Coching, a master storyteller in images and print was born on January 29, 1919. He was the son of noted Tagalog Novelist and comics illustrator Gregorio Coching. Known as the "Dean of Filipino Illustrators," Francisco's illustrations and novels were products of that happy combination of fertile imagination, a love of storytelling, and fine craftsmanship. He synthesized images and stories informing Philippine folk and popular imagination of the culture.

In 1934, he was a central force in the formation of the popular art form of comics. He was a part of the golden age of the Filipino comics in the 1950s and 60's. Until his early retirement in 1973, Coching mesmerized the comics-reading public as well as his fellow artists, cartoonists and writers. Filmmakers like National Artists Lamberto Javellana and Gerardo de Leon translated his novels into films.

Coching caught the imagination of the Pinoy, enough to be able to translate many of his comics into silverscreen; the artist eventually served as a consultant in the filming of his novels, resulting in movies that are now like a time capsule for a bygone era.

He was recognized as Philippine National Artist for Visual Arts in June 2014 for giving form, in words and artwork, to the complex mix of mythology, romance, human drama, legends and heroes that somehow developed the visual consciousness of the ordinary Filipinos.

Coching succeeded in bridging the gap between fine art and popular art. He initiated aspiring artists into comics illustration, in fact, his art style is still being emulated by countless artists in contemporary art, painting and animation.

As tribute to F. V. Coching's centennial year this 2019, SM Aura Premier in partnership with the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts is sponsoring the Centennial Exhibit for the King of Komiks.

The exhibit features original artworks, Unang Labas komiks spreads, and life-size reproductions of his most popular characters and works.

Visit the exhibit from February 18-24, 2019 at the Upper Ground Floor Atrium, SM Aura Premier. This exhibit is free and open to all.

Perfume Dessert : Guide in choosing the signature scent that fits your personality

The girl with the signature scent commands the attention of the entire room the moment she walks in, without having to utter a single word. She is the girl whose perfume lingers subtly in the air long after she's gone, leaving everyone thinking of her and wishing she were still there.

A signature scent is an elusive Holy Grail, and too often, the search for it becomes a lifelong quest. To guide you in choosing yours, remember that the perfect perfume is the one that reflects your personality.

Sure, you could just pick up a bottle of the latest and greatest trendy designer fragrance--but you will just smell like everyone else.

So before you head off on one more doomed mission to your department store perfume counter-- why don't find out first the scent that matches your perfume personality with these gourmand scents from the Perfume Dessert?

SAKURA: Perfect if your perfume personality is Floral. This fragrance is for someone who loves being the center of attention. The scent is flirtatious, vivacious, and playful, yet sweet and confident at the same time.

Floral scents are for people who are joyful, free-spirited, and always brightening up a room. They have a warm, sunny, and easy-going disposition. Floral scent lovers, like their favorite flowery notes, are strong. Not only can you smell them from a mile away, but you can also sense their presence before they even arrive.

But did you know that people who love floral scents have a little secret? They’re hopeless romantics.

If your perfume personality is Floral, you’re an unmistakable girly-girl who isn’t afraid to show it. You’re definitely the life of the party. However, girls with a Floral perfume personality cannot be easily swayed.

Like the bold blooms of roses, peonies, jasmine, orchids, freesia, and other powdery floral fragrances, Sakura is as bright and lively as the modern girls who wear it.

Strawberry Shortcake, Orange Mimosa Sherbet, Fruit Tart, and Apple Pomegranate Salad are perfect if your perfume personality is Fresh and Fruity.

Anyone with a Fresh perfume personality makes cool look effortless. These people are laid-back and low-key but fun-loving and ready for anything. These perfumes are ideal for sporty girls with a quirky sense of humor who live life to the fullest. If that sounds like you, you'll love a light, fresh fragrance that matches your chill vibe.

These fragrances, with their hints of citrus and fruit, exude a cool, light, and clean scent that can become your new favorite.

The woman with a fresh scent is vibrant and charming. She always smells refreshingly bright, and you can’t get enough of her. She is welcomed wherever she goes and breezes through life effortlessly.

The fruity girl is your partner-in-crime. She’s always up for a party, a new scene, or an adventurous journey. Carefree, playful, and bubbly, she makes a wonderful addition to any circle of friends. She doesn’t take herself too seriously.

These scents from Perfume Dessert are a total tease and truly intoxicating.

Gum Drops, French Macaron, and Cake Pops are perfect for a Sweet Perfume Personality.

Like candy, people with a Sweet perfume personality are timeless. They make any event more fun, and people keep coming back for more. Above all, they are reliable, genuine, and go with the flow. They have an adventurous spirit, are kids at heart, and love playing in groups. However, they don’t handle it well when things don’t go their way.

If these scents were a woman, she would be ethereal and addictive. When you're having a bad day, you can’t get enough of her innocent humor and exhilarating personality. She's optimistic about everything—even that sketchy bar in the back alley. She is the center of attention, drawing people in with her cotton-candy charm and youthful charisma.

Being the perfect blend of sweetness, these gourmand perfumes from Perfume Dessert brighten anyone's day just by being around. If you want to feel like a kid again, any of them would be a perfect choice.

Saludo pays tribute to the Heroes in our daily life

What actually makes a hero? I'd like to say it's the willingness to make a personal sacrifice for the benefit of others.

Serving others while simultaneously serving oneself can be noble, certainly, but a special kind of nobility attaches itself to those who serve others at a cost to themselves. That's the kind of behavior I find heroic.

This definition implies the number of genuine heroes we have is at once smaller and larger than we all think. Smaller, because many of those people held up by the media as heroes, while undoubtedly wonderful in many ways, don't qualify as heroes. Certainly not famous sports figures—even those who quietly provide free game tickets to underprivileged children or volunteer their time and money to charity as numerous pro football players do.

Heroes can be a security guard, a vendor, a street sweeper, a small kid, a beggar on the street. Like most people say, heroes don't have capes, or weapons or armors or superpowers. They only have the heart and the will to help others to the best they can.

If you want to see more of our Pinoy real-life heroes, you should watch Saludo airing in PTV4 every Sunday from 8 - 9 pm. Saludo (Salute) is a tv show produced by Ms. Leonora Sy as part of her advocacy to introduce to the public more of our unsung heroes. The one-hour weekly hero-serye program is a compilation of stories of everyday Filipino heroes, the least-told life stories which could be the inspiration of each and every Filipino.

The actors of the series are our beloved good-looking policemen known as the "GwaPulis."

They are the following :
