Why Herbalife Personalizes Sports Nutrition Education for Young Athletes

The LA Galaxy, several triathletes from around the world, and a rugby player from the Philippines – these are just a few of the athletes I work with as part of my job at Herbalife Nutrition, which is to help these elite athletes improve their performance through good nutrition.

As exciting as working with professional athletes may be, working with college athletes – such as those competing at the annual football scouting Combine – is special in a different way. I witness the immense effort and joy of these young men who are very close to achieving their long-life dream of playing professional football in the U.S.

And I get to play a part in that journey by providing them personalized sports nutrition education.

All Proteins, No Carbs: A Common Mistake

To date, I have worked with more than 100 male athletes training for the Combine, with the vast majority of them joining the top professional football teams in the country. Despite coming from top collegiate programs I’ve found that most of them are not familiar with sports nutrition education.

For example, I noticed that many rookies make the mistake of thinking that as an athlete, they should only eat protein and avoid carbohydrates.

Focusing solely on protein is not the best way to build muscle. For improved results, protein intake needs to be combined with enough good-quality calories from carbohydrates. The body utilizes protein more effectively if carbs are available. Plus, carbs are important for replenishing glycogen stores.

The Importance of Personalizing Sports Nutrition Education

I believe it’s important to begin sports nutrition education at a younger age, especially for young athletes. This education has to be personalized, not only because everybody is different and has unique needs, but because that way, athletes understand that everything that is going in their bodies has a purpose.

This is exactly how our independent distributors are trained to coach their own customers. Whether they are working with folks who only exercise on weekends, teenage athletes, parents, rookies, triathletes or someone looking to make regular exercise a part of their lives, the first thing they do is complete a personalized evaluation to better understand their customers goals. Do they want to build muscle? Improve speed? Endurance?

Whatever their goal is, distributors provide product guidance to help their customers prepare and achieve their fitness goals. For example, we are seeing a lot of interest in specific nutrients, such as BCAAs and creatine. But without proper guidance, you can end up wasting your money buying a product that doesn’t fit your goals or that will provide you too much or too little of some nutrient.

People looking to embark on a health and fitness journey should make sure they are getting what their body needs, and that is something our distributors are trained to help with.

Inspiration to Get Started

Combine athletes are inspiring examples of how far discipline and inspiration can get you. Nutrition goals are often hard and require commitment, but the results are worth it.

If you are looking to become more active, remember you don’t have to change everything overnight. Start small, make little changes, but don’t wait until you feel in super good shape to add in sports nutrition.

As soon as you start working out and stressing your body, you’ll want to make sure you’re fueling and taking care of it properly from day one.

GCash Goes Green, eyes 365 thousand trees planted In 365 days

Our environment nowadays is in its most vulnerable phase. With all the pollution, dirt and waste that are being thrown in it, problems and harm in human is felt every now and then. These environmental issues surrounding us does not happen only in our country but in the whole world, so every ounce of protection and every inch of care for Mother Earth will surely go a long way.

Leading mobile wallet, GCash has heard the loud cry of nature, asking for help, wanting more saviour to come so the future generation will no longer be at risk; which is why they introduce an exciting ”green” feature on the app called GCash Forest.

Filipinos who want to contribute to environmental preservation can now conveniently use this innovative mobile phone app to help plant trees and increase the Philippines’ forest cover. GCash Forest lets subscribers plant virtual trees that will have real-Iife counterparts.

By the end of 365 days, GCash Forest aims to plant 365 thousand trees with the help of GCash subscribers. According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Forest Management Bureau (FMB), the Philippines is losing 47,000 hectares of forest cover every year. The FMB also reported the need to rehabilitate 1.2 million hectares of forest lands by 2022 to prevent landslides, ensure water availability, and preserve biodiversity.

“GCash Forest is about making it easier, more convenient, and even rewarding for everyone to take care of our environment for the benefit of future generations,” said Mynt CEO Anthony Thomas.

GCash is no longer just providing an excellent platform for accessible financial products and services but also enabling Filipinos to be more active in responding to real-life issues, such as climate change mitigation through reforestation.

GCash considers GCash Forest as a last mile initiative that fully recognizes the emergence of an all-digital Filipino lifestyle.

To implement its tree-planting initiatives, GCash Forest partnered with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and The Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN).

The DENR will provide land resources in lpo Watershed, an essential component of the Angat-Umiray-Ipo watersheds system supplying 98 percent of Metro Manila's water. WWF will be providing trees and manpower while BIOFIN will provide expertise on monitoring.

Thomas added that recent findings on the Philippines’ vulnerability to climate-related hazards call for greater collective action. Results of the Global Peace Index 2019 identified the Philippines as the most susceptible country to the adverse effects of climate change.

By leveraging the GCash platform and scale, GCash Forest aims to rally a coalition of individuals, non-government organizations, and international organizations to meet its 2020 targets. To plant trees through GCash Forest, GCash users need to collect ”green energy" by frequently using the app. Users who get enough green energy can choose which species of trees they want to plant in a selected area at the lpo watershed. Once the trees are physically planted, users get to receive a certificate of ownership with a serial number, fun facts and updates on the growth of their trees on their GCash apps.

"Many Filipinos, especially the younger ones, care about the environment but a lot of them don’t know how they can actively take part in environmental protection. This is a barrier that GCash Forest addresses because they only need to use their smartphones-an already integral part of their daily lives-to make a difference," concluded Thomas.

The new featureis inspired by Alipay Ant Forest, a product operates by Ant Financial, an Alibaba affiliate n e parent company of the world’s leading payments and lifestyle platform, Alipay. Via the mobile platform, more than 500 million users have planted 100 million real trees and advanced a shared vision of sustainable and inclusive development.

“The GCash Forest shows digital technology holds a huge power to mobilize people in support of sustainable development and the fight against climate change. And this power goes beyond border and is at our fingertips through our mobile devices,” said Yan Meng, Ant Financial’s Global Head of International Partnerships. “We’re more than happy to open up our technology and expertise to current and potential partners to make the world a better place.”

Watch out for the GCash Forest to be available in the app, let's contribute to a better future by planting virtual trees and make a difference.

Tanduay, Undefeated as the World's No. 1 Rum for Two Consecutive Years

I can still remember, it was June 13 last year when I attended Tanduay's press conference wherein they proudly announced being the world's number rum, dethroning big names such as Bacardi. What a proud moment for every Pinoy, whether rum drinkers or not.

Exactly a year after, June 15 at the same venue - Century park Hotel Manila - a presscon was again held for a very special announcement. Tanduay remains the world’s industry leader when it comes to rum, for the second straight year!

The 165-year-old Filipino brand staying in the No.1 seat and outperforming other foreign rum brands in the latest report released by Drinks International was really unexpected, but they re all glad that no matter how hard it is to stay on top - they made it, a Filipino brand made it to the international scene.

“This is a milestone not just for Tanduay, but for the Philippines as well. This shows that that Filipino craftsmanship is truly world-class,” said Lucio “Bong” Tan, Jr., president and chief operating officer, Tanduay Distillers, Inc.

Drinks International, a global spirits market think tank, released this month its Ranking of the World’s Million-Case Spirits Brands for 2019. Annually, it releases industry updates and rankings of brands that record volumes of a million 9-litre cases or above the previous year. There were 153 brands surveyed from last year.

Supporting Tanduay's biggest milestones so far for 2 consecutive years

“The two horse-race between Bacardi and Tanduay seems to be a thing of the past, with the later boasting an additional 3M cases in 2019,” the report said.

The report further indicated that, “the major players in the rum category do seem to be in a more powerful state than they were 12 months ago.”

Tan, under whose leadership saw the growth of Tanduay as a global brand, said: “Our people rose to the challenge and worked even harder. Exports expanded as far as the US, Europe, and Asia. We have also embarked on high profile marketing initiatives. Today we are reaping the fruits of our hard work. We have once again maintained our stature as the world’s number one rum.”

Tanduay shared the announcement during a media conference held at Century Park Hotel Manila on June 15, 2019. During the same media conference, Tanduay announced its partnership with the city of Bacolod in staging the first Rum Festival in the Philippines. The week-long celebration, which will run from Aug. 17 to Aug. 24, 2019, pays homage to the city’s sugarcane industry.

Tanduay Sponsors Bacolod’s First Rum Festival

Tanduay has always taken pride in the hard work and craftsmanship of the Filipino. Through the Tanduay Rum Festival, they join the city of Bacolod in giving a toast to the men and women who have made sugarcane industry what it is today. Being a huge part in Tanduay’s success Tanduay Distillers, Inc. sponsors Bacolod City’s first Rum Festival, a week-long celebration that seeks to highlight its sugarcane industry.

To be held from Aug. 17 to 24, 2019, the Tanduay Rum Festival was being mounted in partnership with the city government of Bacolod, the city where the finest sugarcane come from.

“We are honored to have the world’s number one rum as our partner in staging the first Rum Festival in the Philippines. This festival is being done to celebrate the humble sugarcane. The celebration highlights Filipino excellence in different fields—from culinary arts to music and dance,” said Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia.

Tanduay has been declared the world’s number one rum anew by Drinks International. The company is celebrating its 165th year in the Philippines.

On the Rum Festival’s first day, Aug. 17, the festival will have an Open Kitchen Competition and a Mixology Contest. Contestants will be asked to make dishes and cocktails using rum, and will be judged by prominent culinary and mixology professionals.

The first day will likewise see the opening of a food bazaar that will feature various local Bacolodnon and rum-infused dishes for both locals and tourists to enjoy.

The visual arts, meanwhile, will take center stage from Aug. 19 to 23 as a Street Art and Barrel Art painting will be held to showcase the talent of Bacolod’s local artists.

On Aug. 24, there will be a 5k Rum Run that will have a mini obstacle course, where participants will go through a mud crawl and a cold pool dip. Following the race is a Street Dance parade and contest. Interested participants can form a group of 30. They can also make their own mini floats and join the colorful Rum Festival Float Parade to win cash prizes.

The Rum Festival will end with a concert featuring rock bands and hip hop artists from Bacolod and Manila.

Blockchain Technology from WTIA will soon benefit the country for its real projects

The rise of virtual currencies in the Philippines started in 2014 when the BSP released its first advisory and informed the public about its features and risks in dealing with cryptocurrencies. 3 years after, a circular concerning virtual currency exchanges that are more favorable towards crypto was released under the so-called BSP Circular 944 where licensed companies are allowed to legally exchange fiat to cryptocurrency and vice versa.

My first hand experience and knowledge on cryptocurrencies was in 2015. It was an app where I can earn virtual coins through tasks or trade and invest them.  In 2018, when there was a sudden downfall and issues concerning that virtual coin; I stopped investing but still continued using other services in the app such as mobile payments and online shopping.

My understanding and awareness on blockchain and cryptocurrency is too shallow until I met the representatives from World Token Issuing Alliance (WTIA) and gave me in-depth knowledge about their technology.

WTIA is the advisory and capital market solution of some of the biggest real-world blockchain projects in the world. Projects include sovereign-level tokenization programs, utility-token driven business models for listed companies, tokenized infrastructure securities, high technology applications and much more. Governments and large corporations seeking a new paradigm in management, asset utilization, business development and stakeholder engagement have joined the WTIA, therefore it has become a network of some of the world’s top business, infrastructure development, blockchain advisors and discerning investors, bringing capital, technology and know-how to developing countries and large multi-national corporations.

WTIA Representatives showed off their license from CEZA

Just like the other blockchain and virtual currencies, WTIA sought license for them to be able to operate in the country. This June, the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority has granted an Offshore Virtual Currency Exchange (OVCE) Provisional Regular License to WTIA, paving the way for WTIA to launch its exchange service on the WTIA Platform.

With the help of the regulatory and business framework in CEZA, the World Token Issuing Alliance (WTIA) will help companies and countries from around the world adopt emerging blockchain technology and embrace a new tokenized economy.

WTIA works with some of the world’s largest blockchain and asset tokenization projects and is responsible for bringing together such projects as Monopoly Hotels & Resorts (MHR); Smart City Company (SCC); and many more.

According to Keunyoung Kim, the chairman of WTIA, "WTIA is all about supporting Real Projects that have a positive impact on the community and country. Projects that deliver economic growth, create high value jobs, and can benefit from blockchain technology’s transparency, trust and security."

This is a major step forward for WTIA as they prepare to launch their fully regulated security token exchange platform to increase liquidity for their projects. WTIA’s new license will allow WTIA to offer security, utility and virtual currency tokens, covering the broad spectrum of token offerings required as the portfolio of projects under WTIA expands.

With the increasing popularity of blockchain and its growing ecosystem of tokens, liquidity ensures fair pricing for projects through market dynamics and allows users to invest in the success of projects that they support.

Kaycee Kim CEO of WTIA expressed that they are very excited to receive this important license from CEZA. WTIA will be able to help their projects develop tokenization models based on asset digitalization, solving many of the problems and bottlenecks in the current marketplace. Through WTIA and blockchain technology, they are hopeful that they can bring real projects to fruition, creating economic prosperity and jobs for all.

The ability to tokenize assets is creating a quiet revolution in the financial world. The digital tokenization of assets such as real estate, corporate assets and even IP allows assets to change hands conveniently, quickly and cheaply, without the need for complicated processes and even middlemen. Information is stored on an immutable ledger, secured via a decentralized network, and linked through cryptology, creating a trusted system for the transfer and verification of ownership. Many mainstream financial institutions and asset management companies are very interested in the prospects from this technology and are considering the issuance of tokens backed by real world assets.

One of the features of WTIA is the WTIA Exchange and the RXR Token. The WTIA-X is a platform or an app for the digital exchange enhancing liquidity of the projects, giving the network of over 54 million investors an opportunity to partake in the development and growth of WTIA projects. Do take note however, that unlike the current blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies in the country, WTIA is not open for small scale investments, because they are building real projects for communities and smart cities and generate jobs and opportunities for people.

RXR coin on the other hand, is a utility token that are issued to provide liquidity and trading support to all WTIA projects. It will be used to pay for fees on WTIA and WTIA-X. RxR Tokens can be exchanged for BTC and ETH.

By licensing WTIA in the Philippines, it is not impossible that the country may soon adapt the WTIA Logistics or WLOG Platform which forms the backbone for logistics and payment settlement between customers and stakeholders, or copy the Tunisia Economic City project which is a development of Smart City wherein the Security Token is tied to real estate development and growth promotion featuring Smart Payments, Smart Energy, Waste management and more.

With the aid of CEZA which will be responsible for all the legal aspects of WTIA's investments and transactions in the country, the company is confident that Philippines efforts to develop its virtual currency and blockchain industry will lead the region in the years to come.

Congressman Teodorico Nonong Haresco - no more promises but real progress for Aklan

Congressman Haresco's noble dream for the whole province of Aklan is now just a step away from becoming a reality after winning the midterm elections.

Vowing to continue what he had promised during the campaign, he assured to represent the voices of the people in need for better health programs, livelihood and education apart from the infrastructure projects that he has long been doing for his beloved province.

Now that he is in the House of Representatives, he is extending his help for people's medical needs, especially for those who are keeping their faith for healing at the Heart Center, Kidney Center and the PGH. As we all know, these health facilities have the most number of people who deserve to be noticed and be given utmost help from our leaders.

As a firm believer that education is the foundation for a progressive country and a liberal nation, his scholarship programs will not just be given to his constituents but to every deserving individual who struggles to get a decent education in college. With this move, Haresco is not just living his vision for a more educated and civilized Filipinos but he is also making every student's dream for success in their chosen field more real and more achievable. He promises to help those students who aim high for their education which is why he is willing to send those deserving to the best educational institutions in the country such as De La Salle, Ateneo, and University of the Philippines.

One of Congressman Nonong's greatest vision for the province of Aklan is to make it the preferred place for retirees in terms of security, peace and order and livelihood in the region. As a matter of fact, there are a few pilots from the Air Asia who showed interest to settle for good in Aklan after their service to the company.

The accessibility from the province to Manila which now takes less than an hour also makes it a better choice for retirees. Congressman Haresco sees a very positive outlook on the matter which is why he is very eager to bring the development to the whole province.

He also mentioned his long term goals for the microentrepreneurs of his province. I can still remember how big is the heart of Nonong for these small business owners and start-ups that he wanted to shield them from the "threats" - the big corporations wanting to own parts of the province to put up their self-serving projects.

Congressman Teodorico Nonong Haresco is the bearer of the Nacionalista Party as Member of the House of Representatives for the Second Provincial District of Aklan which is composed of the towns of Buruanga, Ibajay, Lezo, Makato, Malay (where Boracay Island is located), Malinao, Nabas, Numancia, and Tangalan.

Congressman Haresco has won the hearts of Aklanons with 92, 846 votes, leaving behind the other three hopefuls of the position.

Starting July 1, 2019, he will start serving the new district of Aklan with a total population of 277, 505 to date.
