Safeguard Against Germs— Your Ultimate Flu Season Survival Guide

As much as people welcome the cooler climate, living in the tropics also means ushering in more fickle weather, and the spread of common flu viruses and germs that the wet season brings. This makes people more vulnerable to getting sick—especially kids.

Due to the uncontrollable weather outside, most people tend to stay inside their houses in the hopes of being safe and protected from the season’s threats. However, staying indoors doesn’t necessarily mean that you are safe from all the germs and the illnesses that go with it. Did you know that many objects inside your home are actually germ infested? What’s worse, some germs find humid weather an ideal environment to grow even faster!

These wrong assumptions or “maling akala” that you have may cause your family diseases that may worsen if not taken seriously. Your best bet is to make your family’s health a top priority during these months. So what’s your game plan to keep everyone protected from it?

1. Be brave and get those flu shots

While it won’t be a hundred percent effective at blocking the flu virus, it can help boost your protection from it significantly. Studies have shown that it has helped lower hospitalization rates among children. Be sure to consult your physician to make sure that you don’t have any existing allergies to the shot before taking it.

2. Say to NO to junk!

The rainy season takes a major toll on the body’s immune system. Load up on fruits and vegetables that are known for their ability to boost the immune system is essential. Adding more citrus and greens to your diet can help and is a simple, preventive measure that helps you maintain a stronger immune system.

3. Catch more Zzz’s

Another culprit known for bringing your immune system down? Lack of sleep. Try to get at least 6 hours every night. Not only will your immune system thank you for it, you’ll also feel more energized.

4. Make it a habit to keep those hands clean

“Typhoons and heavy rains may cause flooding which, in turn, can potentially increase the transmission of water-borne diseases, or diseases transmitted through water contaminated with human or animal waste. These include typhoid fever, leptospirosis, and hepatitis A.” mentioned by Department of Health in a recent statement. These diseases may be obtained by having close contact with person who is infected or being in a contaminated environment.  These illnesses may even be deadly but can be prevented with proper handwashing using the right antibacterial soap.

To lower your risk of infection, the solution is simple: wash your hands. Use warm water whenever possible, and use an antibacterial soap known for its ability to provide advanced and long lasting protection against germs, like Safeguard. Safeguard is equipped with GermShield+ technology which Fights against 3 types of germs-Gram+ bacteria, Gram- bacteria, and fungi and prevents microbial regrowth for up to 24 hours.

Scrub and lather well, washing the top and bottom of your hands, between fingers and even under your nails. Avoid drying your hands using a shared hand-towel. Instead, use paper towels or a hand dryer.

Remember, kids are the most vulnerable to germs and viruses during flu season. So be sure that they are dressed appropriately for the weather, get them vaccinated against the flu, teach them the importance of eating healthy, focus on maintaining good hygiene, especially through frequent hand washing using a soap that gets the job done right.

Safeguard Pure White Body Wash is available in 720ml (PhP 219), 400ml (PhP 145) and 200ml (PhP 85)

Safeguard Pure White Bar Soap is available in 90g (P 25.75), 135g (P 38), and 180 ml (P 48.00)

Safeguard Pure White Liquid Hand Soap is available in 225ml (P 80.00)

FASHION FAVORS THE BOLD, Style reach new heights with the SM Woman Plus Collection

Sky is the limit as far as fashion is concerned and SM Woman Plus has endless possibilities to a world of style. SM Woman Plus does three of fashion’s most massive trends, turning classic themes into of-the-moment pieces that still withstand trend and season.

BLACK AND WHITE

Opposites attract, and this classic non-color fashion duo will attest to that. Whether worn separately or as a tandem, blacks and whites set the tone of the look, tempering a vibrant matching piece or polishing an otherwise rugged combination. However you wear it, you can’t go wrong with black and white.

Style tips:

Elongate legs instantly with a pair of black pants.

Use optical illusions to your advantage! Achieve a glass-shaped figure by cinching a black and white dress with a slim black belt.

Freshen up a black and white look by topping it off with a dark denim jacket.

Make black and white separates pop with a crisp white top.

DENIM

What’s a girl to do without denim? Fashion’s legendary neutral fabric, denim offsets just about any piece in your wardrobe—sparkle, flounce, even denim itself! Universal in function, denim looks are acceptable in just about any function. Take it to the beach, to the boardroom, and even in formal occasions—if styled correctly! Trends may come and go, but this trusty textile is here to stay.

Style tips:

Monochromatic denim isn’t all about blue! Pair green denim overalls with a green tee and green denim jacket

Add a feminine touch to your denim pencil skirt with a ruffled cold-shoulder top.

Make your denim on denim outfit look fresh by pairing different denim washes.

PASTELS AND NEUTRALS

It’s 2019—have no fear with color! Nail the ultimate millennial shade palette: muted pastels and nudes. Building a colorful wardrobe is an uphill climb: start with casual tops, invest in safe bottoms, then play your way to all kinds of frills and details! Don’t even worry about logically matching colors—these pretty tones have a way of sorting (and styling) themselves out.

Style Tips:

No brainer monochromatic pastels are a must—they make your five minute look instantly look put-together!

Milk the millennial pink craze: a pastel pink jumpsuit is the perfect go-to piece you never knew you needed.

Afraid light colors might be unflattering? Throw rules out the window, happy shades make you look easy on the eyes.

‘DO IT RIGHT!’ campaign calls on Filipinos to proudly show their support for RH and family planning

More organizations, celebrities, and ordinary Filipinos are encouraged to join and add their voices to the cause.

A coalition of 11 organizations today launched a campaign urging Filipinos to show their support openly for family planning and reproductive health (RH), with the “DO IT RIGHT!” slogan and a distinctive hand sign.

Repeated opinion polls have shown that more than 70 percent of Filipinos support family planning and initiatives, such as the Responsible Parenthood and RH Law.

“The ‘DO IT RIGHT!’ campaign is designed to encourage everyone to take those beliefs they already hold inside and share them out in the open, proudly, especially on social media like Facebook,” said co-organizer Benjamin de Leon, President of The Forum for Family Planning and Development. “By showing each other how many feel the same, in a positive, celebratory spirit, Filipinos can together free themselves of old inhibitions.”

The campaign will include a social-media blitz, festival events, as well as advertising in traditional media like billboards, print and radio. It encourages couples and individuals to flash the Do It Right! hand sign in selfie posts or in public: Two fingers held up together -- representing the members of a couple – with a thumb in-between representing the contraceptive or safe-sex measures that strengthen their bond.

The coalition has set up a Facebook page (www.facebook.com/DoItRightPH/) to serve as the focal point for the evolving campaign, as well as the hashtag #DoItRight.

Initial members include DKT Philippines, the Family Planning Organization of the Philippines (FPOP), The Forum for Family Planning and Development, The Philippine Society for Responsible Parenthood, LoveYourself, RTI International, SheDecides Philippines, and all four professional associations for the country’s midwives.

At a press conference held in Makati City, they called on more like-minded organizations and individuals to throw their weight behind the campaign.

“This is wide open. We invite anyone who feels this topic is important -- companies, famous Filipinos, anyone -- to come on board,” said Hyam Asher Bolande, Chairman of the Board of DKT Philippines. Following the example of the #MeToo anti-sexual harassment movement that grew in North America as more and more women spoke up, the Do It Right! campaign is designed to gather strength over time, he added.

Economists and public-health experts have long lamented the need for improved RH education and access to modern contraception in the Philippines, especially for the country’s poorest. Religious-based organizations have protested the RH Law in recent years, but the law prevailed against court challenges and is fully in force today.

At the press conference, Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) Undersecretary Juan Antonio Perez III hailed the launch of the ‘DO IT RIGHT!’ campaign, which he said comes at a crucial time when the government is also increasing its efforts to fully implement the law.

Nandy Senoc, FPOP Executive Director said, “It’s high time for society to finally put aside fears and embarrassment about this topic and declare openly – as the majority of Filipinos, together – that RH is OK, that it’s responsible.”

“When youth and women are empowered, there will be no teen pregnancies, no early marriages, no unwanted pregnancies or abortions. When women are well informed, the fight against poverty is already halfway won,” he added.

About the ‘Do It Right!’ Coalition

DKT Philippines is a foundation that has been promoting family planning in the Philippines since 1991, when it pioneered mass distribution of condoms through social marketing of the Trust brand. It is affiliated with DKT International, Washington, DC-based non-profit organization that works in 29 developing countries worldwide to make affordable contraceptive choices and education on RH available to all.

The Family Planning Organization of the Philippines (FPOP) is a provider of quality sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services to all Filipinos especially the poor and marginalized, socially excluded and underserved groups or populations. It operates clinics, partnering with other clinics and/or facilities for referrals, conducts outreach clinics, and partners with community-based distributors and volunteers.

The Forum for Family Planning and Development has been among the lead NGOs involved in pushing policies that benefit women and children. Key accomplishments include supporting the RH Law, the lifting of the Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) on Implants and other FP commodities, the Safe Public Spaces Law to address sexual harassment and VAW in public spaces, and the Mental Health Law. The Forum is part of a consortium of NGOs advocating for adequate and equitable government budgets for health.

The Philippine Society for Responsible Parenthood (PSRP) was organized in 2003 to empower women and families to determine when and how many pregnancies they will have. It has three main programs: advocacy for FP, training of FP providers, and raising the quality of FP services for women.

LoveYourself is a volunteer driven community-based non-profit organization that provides a wide range of HIV and sexually transmitted infection-related services, including education and prevention, testing, counseling, treatment and life coaching, as well as transgender health services.

RTI International is an independent, nonprofit institute that provides research, development, and technical services to government and commercial clients worldwide. RTI works in the Philippines in partnership with the Philippine Government and civil society to strengthen health systems and improve health outcomes. RTI is currently the lead implementor of ReachHealth, a five-year USAID-funded project that aims to reduce unmet need for family planning services and decrease teen pregnancy and newborn morbidity and mortality.

SheDecides Philippines is the local movement of SheDecides, an urgent reaction to the reinstatement by US President Donald Trump of the Global Gag Rule, which prevents NGOs outside the US from receiving money from the US government if they provide RH services. The goal of the organization is to counter the devastating effects of this rule on women, girls and their communities around the world.

The Integrated Midwives Association of the Philippines (IMAP), the Private Practicing Midwives Association of the Philippines (PPMAP), the Midwives Foundation of the Philippines (MFPI), and the Philippine League of Government and Private Midwives (PLGPM) are the main associations for professional midwives in the country.

CIMB Bank Announces 500,000th Customer, Expands strategic partnership with GCash

Since this GCash feature called GSave was launched on the app, I never have had any second though on using it. Who doesn't want to save for as low as Php1.00? Yes, all it takes is Php1.00 for you to start saving and it's earning interest.

I was not aware that many people have been into it, too until CIMB Bank Philippines (CIMB Bank PH) announced that it has garnered 500,000 customers, approximately six months after opening its doors for business in the Philippines. The milestone was reached anchored on a strong proposition of co-creation and partnership between CIMB Bank and GCash.

The all-digital, mobile-first CIMB Bank PH, was launched in early 2019 with a goal of bringing a unique and differentiated banking proposition to Filipinos. Anchored on a DNA of strong strategic partnerships and solving customer pain points digitally, CIMB Bank PH had forged a partnership with GCash, to allow GCash’s customers direct, paperless and seamless access to savings account services, a product termed GSave. GCash is an epayments platform owned by Mynt, the revolutionary fintech startup of Globe Telecom, Ayala Corporation and Ant Financial, an affiliate of Jack Ma’s Alibaba Group.

Tengku Dato’ Sri Zafrul Aziz, Group CEO, CIMB Group, who was in Manila to celebrate this milestone said, “CIMB Bank PH is surely the fastest growing bank in ASEAN, a wonderful achievement, and a strong testament of things that can be achieved in the regime of digital-only banks. We are motivated by this and will continue to innovate for our customers. Well done to the teams.”

In line with this, CIMB Bank PH and GCash also announced that the GSave bank account will be exclusively offered only on the GCash platform. The companies also said they will be working together to make added suites of financial services products available to GCash customers in the future. These services will be announced in due course.

Zafrul added, “The partnership with GCash was central to us achieving this milestone. It is a live case study of bank-tech partnerships, a combination of banking expertise and technology platform plays, and the opportunities it allows both parties to access. I look forward to developing more propositions with GCash to further establish our mobile banking presence in the Philippines.”

Anthony Thomas, President and Chief Executive Officer of GCash affirmed its shared mission with CIMB Bank to increase accessibility of financial products and services for all Filipinos. “The acquisition of 500,000 users is a clear testament that the partnership between GCash and CIMB Bank through GSave is a success. We welcome this achievement and the deepening of our collaboration with CIMB Bank, and assure our users that we will continue to provide more innovative services to address the banking and financial needs of Filipinos who aspire for financially better lives for their families.”

The 500,000 GSave users are now enjoying the benefits of CIMB’s savings account, which is available as the Save Money feature on the GCash app. GSave offers an interest rate of 3 percent per annum, which is more than ten times higher than those interest rates offered by most Philippine banks.

Additionally, GSave does not require an initial deposit or maintaining balance, nor does it impose service charges for transactions—greatly reducing the barriers for ordinary Filipinos to open and maintain a savings account.

ASEAN universal bank CIMB celebrates the milestone achievement of 500,000 users of the GSave mobile savings account on its partner platform GCash, the leading mobile wallet in the Philippines. 7 Folds Laundry proves that "Choice is not only for the rich"

Among the many household chores, doing the laundry is the most daunting which is why I have high admiration for people who can do the laundry by their bare hands. The manual labor they do to wash and clean the clothes while making sure the fabric is still protected and in good shape, is a proof of love and devotion that deserves recognition.

Handwashing is no joke, it drains the energy

But in this modern day world where people lean towards automation, doing the laundry without any help from a machine is a thing of the past. It's energy-draining, it's not practical, and  manually washing the clothes will not give you a productive day.

Let us all accept it, the detergent, the bleach, the fabric conditioners we use nowadays are full of chemicals that may harm our skin or even our health if we get in contact with them every day or more often. Although some companies promote products that are less harsh, some they brag eco-friendly, environment-friendly, natural, organic and the likes, still they have chemicals that are not needed by the body, chemicals that are not suitable for the human skin and might cause serious harm in the long run.

With all these cons that we might encounter by manually washing the clothes, we shifted to washing machines which enable us to multi-task. But then, in our ever demanding world; we sometimes can not even shoot the laundry inside the washing machines and let them do the task. Every second is so precious that we either spend each to either generate income or to take some rest.

Front load washers and driers that are space-savers and energy efficient

That's when laundry shop come into the scene. With laundry shops, we can just bring our dirty clothes and other stuff to them and let them do everything or we can also ask them to pick up the clothes and deliver them back to our place once they're already clean.

That is exactly what 7 Folds Laundy can do for you. They will provide you with convenience and ease of doing the laundry by offering you services that suit your time and your budget.

I remember, in the movie Hello Love Goodbye starring Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards, there was a line there saying "Choice is only for the rich." I used to believe it until I met 7 Folds Laundry. 7 Folds Laundry proved that you will not feel less fortunate once you do business with them because you always have a CHOICE, for less.

Your service, your choice at 7 Folds Laundry

Speaking of CHOICES FOR LESS, let me name a few.

Self-service, full service, wash-dry-press, press only - choose whatever service you need or you want for as low as P30.00 per kilo, minimum of 5 kilos.  Some people avail self service out of curiosity. They want to experience or learn something new. Others do it because they are very meticulous when it comes to the clothes they wear. Whatever type of customer you are, they will welcome you with a smile at 7 Folds Laundry.

Customers who are always on the go and who would aways want to meet their productivity goals choose full-service feature wherein the staff of the shop would take care of everything and you only have to pick up the clothes or have them delivered right to your doorstep.

YOU DO NOTE, 7 Folds Laundry strictly implements one machine, one customer rule; meaning no mixing up of clothes from 2 or more different customers. That's a very good feature of the shop, an excellent service, thinking of hygienic practices for the good of their customers.

Convenience and comfort, apart from quality service

They also follow one-day service policy, so you wouldn't run out of OOTDs. This policy ensures that no matter how many work loads come in, you can expect your thing to be cleaned, dried and nicely wrapped when you are going to pick it up the next day. It is very helpful to people who only buy a few types and kinds of clothing maybe due to limited space or they are just being minimalistic.

7 Folds Laundry prices are very competitive. They offer services at a lesser cost than any other shops in the metro but they don't sacrifice the quality.

While waiting for your clothes to be done, you may also choose to eat, to go online or just sit back and relax. The shop has enough space for you to eat. They can provide you with a table so you won't get hungry while waiting. Sit back and relax - yes relax because they have comfortable chairs and a nice green interior which will relax your sight and mind and take way all the stress brought to you by your pile of laundry. Wi-Fi is provided for free, bring your own coffee if you want.

Systematic labelling and storage

They offer other services for customer's convenience sometimes with no extra cost. To know more about this you may call or text us at 573-0566 / 0936-8823613.

Bacolod Trains the Spotlight on Rum-Making in Upcoming Festival

Just as wineries flourished in the Napa Valley, so did sugarcane plantations in Negros. And just as wine-making became a prominent industry in that region of California, so did rum-making in the city of Bacolod. Tanduay, which has been hailed as the world’s number one rum for the second straight year, celebrates the source of its world-class product the sugarcanes of the island.

“We are proud to have our city associated with the sugarcane as this humble plant has produced many of the country’s world-class products. Negros is already known for being one of the sugar centers of the Philippines. Now, we also want to promote the city as the place where our proudly Philippine-made rum products are made,” said former Bacolod City Councilor Em Ang, who spearheaded the holding of the Rum Festival during her last term in office.

Sponsored by Tanduay, the Rum Festival will run from August 17 to 24. During the event, the organizers aim to highlight the importance of the sugarcane in its history as well as give a toast to the talent and skill of Filipinos.

“The Tanduay Rum Festival is going to be a big celebration. We want people to join us as we raise a glass to rum-making and the Filipino talent and craftsmanship not just in Bacolod, but in the entire country,” said Tanduay Chief Marketing Officer Paul Lim.

Prior to the week of the Rum Festival, Tanduay will hold a Barrel Art Painting Competition in Robinsons Place, Bacolod. The barrels will be on display during an exhibit at Robinsons. During week-long event, an open kitchen and mixology contest will take place on Aug. 17 (Saturday) at the New Government Center (NGC) Grounds. It will also be the start of a weeklong food bazzar at the NGC. On Aug. 23, rapper Mike Swift will be bringing his team of artists to collaborate with local artists of Bacolod in painting a basketball court. On Aug. 24, the last day of the event, several activities will ensue. They include a street dance parade and contest, a 5k Rum Run, and a concert featuring artists from Bacolod and Raymond Marasigan’s Sandwich band.

Mag-Pinggang Pinoy Tayo!

Philippines has been facing a rise in the number of underweight and overweight Filipinos for more than 20 years. The World Health Organization (WHO) defined this phenomenon as the “Double Burden of Malnutrition” or the “prevalence of both undernutrition and overweight in the same community, nation, or region.”
To address this problem, our government launched the Pinggang Pinoy® campaign in 2014. Pinggang Pinoy® is an easy-to-understand food guide showing proper food group portioning on a per-meal basis. This reflects the principles of MOderation, VAriety and BAlance (MOVABA) to promote healthier eating habits.

Solving the Philippines’ Double Burden of Malnutrition should be a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors as it is not an easy feat. With this, Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation partnered with government agencies to conduct education programs to raise awareness and promote the practice of Pinggang Pinoy® in malnutrition hotspots, where incidences of Double Burden Malnutrition are high. This training was given to homemakers/mothers who have malnourished (underweight, stunting, wasting, overweight and obese) school-aged children.

The pilot run resulted to improvements of the knowledge & attitudes of households related to the practice of Pinggang Pinoy® within target areas. However, behavior changes towards healthier eating habits remains to be a challenge. The program uncovered a number #MalnutritionTraps that some Pinoy households easily fall into. The following #MalnutritionTraps provide a picture of how unhealthy eating habits may lead to Double Burden of Malnutrition:

Overconsumption of carbohydrates: Voracious rice eaters can easily fill half of their plates with rice. Others have pandesal & noodles as regular meal deprived of other nutrients derived from a well-balanced meal.

Under consumption of vegetables and/fruits: It is common for some to be content with rice & meat to satisfy their hunger and skip/take insufficient amount of vegetables/fruits. Fact is, the variety of colors found in Glow foods are important sources of vitamins & minerals to sustain our energy & keep us from getting sick.

Overconsumption of protein: Typical Filipino “SILOG” meals include double serving of proteins (e.g. Tapa+Itlog, Tocino+Itlog, Longanisa+Itlog, Bangus+Itlog). Eating different kinds of protein is fine for as long as they are taken in moderation. We must also avoid protein dishes served high in fat, cholesterol and sodium.
