A New Joy in Soy - from Singapore to the Philippines

Filipinos always get excited when there’s a new drink in town. “Milk tea is life” has been the new mantra but wWhat if we tell you that there’s a new alternative to this drink that is equally delicious and addictive, but much healthier?

On September 25, the public discovered a new kind of joy by well-loved Singaporean soy milk brand , Jollibean opens its first pop-up store in Greenbelt, Makati City. Renamed for the international market as Joybean, this new concept offers premium yet affordable, guilt-free, soy-based products with milk tea options to cater to our fellow Filipinos’ love for the popular Asian drink. It’s the freshest Singaporean concept in the Philippines to join BreadTalk, TWG, and Toast Box (now Nanyang).

Brought to the Philippine shores by Joybean Food Masters Corp., the launch of this newest milk craze was spearheaded by its President, Norman Raquel, the Chairman of the Board, Frederick T. Siy, and the Senior Vice President of Jollibean Foods Pte Ltd., Luis Daniel.

Healthier, vegan-friendly option for milk tea lovers

Joybean reveals its own take on this popular drink by introducing a milk tea line exclusive to the Philippine market.

“We’re aware that Filipinos are huge fans of milk tea, so we’re delighted to bring a soy-based milk tea line to cater to this craving but with a healthier, lactose-free version that has less sugar and calories,” said Shannen Francisco, Assistant Brand Marketing Manager of Joybean Philippines.

Some of their recommended flavors are the Brown Sugar Soy Milk, Chocolate Joy Freeze, and Wintermelon Milk Tea. They taste just like your usual favorite drink, but with more health benefits. The drinks are made of soybean milk which is plant-based, and is a good source of protein so you won’t have to worry about compromising your diet. They are made of Grade A, non-GMO, and single variety IP Canadian soy beans. This makes it all vegan-friendly and do not contain any animal or animal by-products.

Apart from promoting hearty options, each drink comes with a sustainable straw made of bamboo, sugar cane, and coffee to help the environment. The food packaging is also eco-friendly and biodegradable. Joybean encourages its customers to help Mother Earth one sip at a time.

A full menu of freshly-made, on-the-go snacks to match your drink

Aside from the array of delighful drinks, Joybean comes with flavorful snacks to match your chosen drink.

You can order delicious pancakes in three variants; crispy, the Mee Chiang Kueh (traditional turnover pancake), and mini pancake rolls. They also have pudding and bean curd on the menu which one can enjoy individually or as a group with friends and family.

“Everything is prepared fresh at the start of each day, and Joybean ensures these snacks contain no preservatives and no food colorings. They complement well with our soy milk drinks, plus they’re easy to consume and especially for the millennials who are in full swing.”

To take part of this new soy experience, drop by at Joybean’s booth located at Greenbelt 3 (across Seattle’s Best Coffee) and discover the new joy in soy! The second pop-up store will soon open in SM Fairview later this year.

Perfume Dessert introduces 5 new vivacious scents for the fumehead and the not so perfumista

On my blog, you might have read an article of two about Perfume Dessert, which is a locally, yet luxuriously made perfume brand that offers gourmand scents - perfume with synthetic edible notes. This brand keeps on evolving which is why I have articles related to it published from time to time.

This time, they are offering new scents to love which I would like to describe as vivacious and twisted because these new scents are innovative, attractive and zestful.

Peach Bourbon Popsicle and Pina Colada

From the name itself, we might have a hint about the scents of these two - cocktail scents. Just like cocktail drinks, you can smell a very light unknown kind of spirit, yet has a sweet scent because of fruit juice, flavored syrup or cream.

With Peach Bourbon Popsicle, you will experience a delicious warm weather cocktail that’s perfect for entertaining or just kicking back. It has a refreshing smell of ripe, juicy, sweet peaches. It is a bit strong, but it is perfect for those who are always outdoor and fun-loving.

Pina Colada on the other hand, has a very light scent, perfect for those who are not into strong smelly perfumes; like me who feels dizzy whenever there are strong smell around. It has a subtle calming scent and just like wht the pineapple symbolizes, this scent if very friendly and gracious.

Raspberry Smoothie and Black Raspberry Vanilla Ice Cream

Both scents came from the "berries" family which are known to be sweet and the berries got a twist of cold beverage and dessert. You might have a notion that these scents are really sweet febreze because of fruits and foods for the sweet-toothed, but no - they aren't just sweet and they do not smell too sweet. Both actually smell a sort of floral or rose note.

The Black Raspberry Vanilla Ice Cream smells a bit strong yet sweet, but once you sprayed it what lingers on the surface is the sweet scent and the strong black raspberry scent becomes subtle. Raspberry Smoothie on the other hand, is a very lovely scent. There's very little sweetness, I can imagine a naive, young, sexy girl whenever I smell it. It is my top choice among the five new scents.

Just like what berries symbolizes, anyone who would wear any of these scents will smell righteous, lovely and kind.

Cotton Candy Unicorn

Light, fluffy, sweet, yet mythical and magical - this is the very defintion of this scent. It will give you the feeling of being young, playful and carefree. I can't stop smelling this amusing scent over and over again because it somehow gives mystery. The scent is just light and you'll feel like walking or lying on the clouds with its scent. It's very feminine, just what the unicorn symbolizes - a graceful, beautiful, strong female.

GCash introduces another innovative service in collaboration with Puregold

Puregold, one of the country's top retail companies, has collaborated with GCash once more to give their growing customers a better, rewarding experience in-store.

Aside from the many perks, discounts, loyalty rewards Puregold and GCash are giving to their customers, old and new; they would also want each and everyone to feel at ease with their transactions.

Last Sept. 10, GCash launched Cash-in with GCash Barcode at Puregold. The event was attended by GCash and Puregold executives -

This latest feature is now available in over 65 Puregold branches nationwide. There is also a dedicated lane for GCash subscribers for faster transactions in select branches of Puregold.

If you are a GCash user who shops at Puregold using the app, you might remember that a few months ago Puregold introduced a new payment method wherein the customer has to generate their own barcode which will be scanned at the counter when paying for goods. That method is way better than before wherein you have to scan the merchants QR then you enter the amount to be paid, select valid voucher, choose the mode of payment - GCash balance or Gcredit, then pay.

But with the new barcode method, all you have to do is scan your barcode and pay the total amount. Any voucher amount that is eligible for use at Puregold will automatically be deducted. The method is also the same when cashing-in at Puregold. But cashing in Puregold is not just convenient but more economical because it's always FREE with any amount unlike in other merchants where you have to pay a certain fee when cashing in P5,000 and up.

Here's how to use the barcode method when purchasing at Puregold :

1. Log-in to your GCash account.
2. Click "Pay QR."
3. Click "Generate Code."
4. Then scan the Barcode in the scanner provided.
5. Pay the total amount of your purchase.

It's that easy, less swipes, less clicks and less taps on your app.

Have you tried using this new feature? What was your experience?

Tanduay’s Rum Fest Joins the Roster of Major Festivals in Bacolod

The City of Smiles headed by Mayor Evelio “Bing” Leonardia now has six major festivals in its annual roster with the recent inclusion of the Rum Festival sponsored by Tanduay. This makes Bacolod the city with the most number of major festivals in the Philippines.

“Fortunately for us, Tanduay really invested into this. It made the Rum Festival a reality and a big success, judging from its initial staging. It started with a big bang, and this big bang would resonate for sure in the years to come,” Mayor Leonardia said.

Held from Aug. 17 to 24, the week-long event is the first of its kind in the country. Known as the Tanduay Rum Festival, the event paid homage to the humble sugarcane as well as celebrated the Filipinos’ skill in the visual arts, culinary arts, mixology, dance, and music. For eight days, Bacolodnons participated in the Barrel Art Painting contest, basketball court painting, Culinaria and Mixology competitions, 5K Rum Run, float parade, streetdance contest, and a concert headlined by iconic rock band Sandwich.

The Rum Festival was staged after an ordinance was passed declaring the third week of August as the date for holding the Rum Festival. In the ordinance, its author, former City Councilor Em Legaspi-Ang cited how Bacolod has been dubbed as the “Sugar Capital of the Philippines” and is the “home of the world’s largest selling rum.”

“For our other festivals, it was a case of holding the festival first, testing it, then later on legitimizing it through the legislative process,” Mayor Leonardia said. “This one (Rum Festival) was an ordinance before it became a festival,” Mayor Leonardia pointed out.

The Rum Festival joins Bacolod’s major festivals that include the Masskara Festival in October, the Bacolaodiat in January, Diwali in November, Chicken Inasal in May, and Halandumon in June.

Hosting festivals is not something new for Mayor Leonardia, who has been involved with the initial staging of the Masskara Festival—Bacolod’s most popular cultural celebration. He used to head the Masskara Foundation, and he has also worked for the Department of Tourism before running for public office after the EDSA Revolution.

“I consider myself an accidental politician,” said the mayor, who has recently been voted to head the City Mayors League of the Philippines.

“It all started when I got involved with the Masskara Festival. I was the one who drafted the constitution and by-laws of the Masskara Foundation,” he shared, adding that he had specifically included a provision that said the chairman of the Masskara Foundation should not hold an elective position.

Later on, Mayor Leonardia would come to the realization that the kind of involvement he had with the Masskara Festival was something that he was inclined to do.

“When I received invitations to run, I decided to join, run like it was another student council election,” he said. Mayor Leonardia was president of the Student Council when he was studying Law at the University of Negros Occidental.

When he finally threw his hat into the political arena, he emerged as the number one councilor in his first try. He received a record number of votes, even more than those of the mayor or vice mayor during that time.

In the next election, he won again, this time as vice mayor. When he finally decided to run for mayor, he successfully toppled the ruling dynasty in his city.

“Even if you don’t have much money, if the people want you, you could become mayor,” he said.

Heading the dynamic city of Bacolod, Mayor Leonardia cited his experience working in the Tourism Department as a factor in helping him deal with people and visitors.

“When you’re in tourism, you have to be people-oriented. You also go to a lot of places, your horizons get widened, your views become broader, and you get insights. You learn to think of the total development of the community and society,” he said.

In staging the first Rum Festival in the country, Mayor Leonardia it’s only fitting that it should be held in Bacolod.

“If you think about it and look back, we should be asking ourselves why we haven’t done this earlier. When you talk of rum, you talk about it being a derivative of sugar, and Bacolod is a city that has developed and prospered because of the sugar industry. It made us so rich, and it has also made us poor. It had its ups and downs,” he said.

Mayor Leonardia likewise pointed out that Bacolod is a good place to hold festivals because of its people.

“The Bacolodnons are the kind of people who are basically happy. We enjoy life. We know how to celebrate. We know how to spend our money. It’s a natural habitat for festivals, and this is the right place to hold the Rum Festival,” he concluded.

Ryan Chris' Ethereal, from a Tale to Reality

Last October 5, 2019 in One Esplanade; R Y A N C H R I S took us on a whimsical journey, featuring his newest Bridal Collection: ETHEREAL - The Tale of a Bridal Fantasy.

Your favorite fairy tale characters were brought to life with a twist of modern-day minimalism and profound taste. From a rebellious take in Ofrendas de Flores - R Y A N C H R I S sent us back to memory lane where everything is magical; and just like in every fairy tale, it all starts with a series of promiscuous misfortunes, but this should never stop us from dreaming and making these dreams a ”reality."

It is true, that Ethereal brought us to fantasy land during the entire show; featuring a diverse line up of models and a stunning display of artistry, at the end of the show we were reminded that behind every dream is ”e-THE-REAL”, that we are in reality, and in reality dreams should be fulfilled.

Aside from enjoying the show, the proceeds of the event will help build bigger and better classrooms for the students of Tomas Earnshaw Elementary School, said Ryan Chris.

Lola Igna : more than a beautiful movie, it's a tribute to our senior artists

When was the last time you watched a movie top-billed by our senior actors?

Truth be told, in our country, as the artists grow old in the industry, their chances of getting projects decreases. Only those really famous and well-known up to the current times are given the opportunity to showcase their craft.

Good thing Direk Eduardo Roy Jr. has come up with a film that will feature a granny as the lead character.

Coinciding with the celebration of 100 years of Philippine cinema, Found Films and EMBA Production proudly bring "Lola Igna" - one of three arthouse films under the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino Sandaan Showcase. While so much of cinema's history is shaped by the stories beneath the stories, Lola Igna aims to connect with the Filipino moviegoers with important life lessons to learn. The film is headlined by Ms. Angie Ferro, starring Yves Flores, Meryll Soriano, and Maria Ysabel Lopez.

Lola Igna started filming in august 2018; explored the story from the point of view of a granddaughter and a great-grandson and the dynamics of their relationship with their great-great-grandmother. It's about emotions and coping as one nears the end of life.

Living in a secluded hut in the middle of the ricefields Lola Igna is a 118-year old grumpy old woman who just wants to die already, but her neighbors are hung-up on winning the world record for the oldest living grandmother which makes her an instant celebrity. In the middle of all the sudden changes in Lola Ignas's life, she meets Tim, her great-great-grandchild from Ana. Tim is an aspiring vlogger who wants to latch on her now-famous grandmother.

What are their unsolved issues? What are their regrets and what kind of grievances do they have on one another? How will they help each other to move on, live more and love to the fullest? It's time to find oneself and help others in the process.

Lola Igna is written and directed by Edurado Roy, Jr. He has done four-length films as a finalist of Cinemalaya Independent Film festival, namely: Bahay Bata (2011), Quick Change (2013), Pamilya Ordinaryo (2016) and Fuccbois (2019). He has written and directed a romantic comedy film with Star Cinema - Last Fool Show (2019).

Leading the pack of multi-talented actors is the iconic character actress, Ms. Angelica "Angie" Caballero Ferro - started 1969 as a Theater Actor in PETA, where she was one of the pioneer resident actors. Her film and TV credits consist of nearly a hundred, with notable performances on Atsay and Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara. Ms. Angie Ferro is a rare performer who easily moves from theater to TV and radio.

Lola Igna serves as one inspiration to make films that would define the Philippine film industry as it celebrates its 100th year.

Chef Gene Gonzalez shares how easy it is to prepare food for the holidays using King Sue

What better way to start BER months apart from decorating the house with garlands, poinsettias, Christmas lights and trees and other symbols for Christ's birth? Food of course - preparing for a feast, searching for more unique yet mouth-watering dishes to serve with the whole family on the Eve of the most wonderful time of the year.

To help every household lessen the holiday woes and to help them easily prepare for the upcoming celebrations, internationally renowned Chef Gene Gonzalez cooks up traditional favorites and sumptuous innovations with a King Sue twist at his flagship ancestral home turned restaurant for King Sue’s Pre-Holiday Media Lunch at Café Ysabel, 175 M Paterno Street, San Juan, Metro Manila.

Chef Gene, who opened Café Ysabel at 23 and is now president of the pioneering Center for Asian Culinary Studies, pays tribute to King Sue products which have been a staple fare on the dining table as well as in his kitchen. “King Sue has been there at home ever since,” shares the author of “Cocina Sulipeña” and many other cookbooks.

He’d wake up to King Sue bacon for breakfasts as a student, enjoy Chinese ham during holiday festivities with the family, and rely on Chinese sausage for his Asian cooking and for his culinary school. “I also like their dried pork feet, which goes into my Spanish cooking and to my superior stock that gives my Chinese dishes authenticity,” he reveals.

“Rather than glaze a ham, you can braise it in a mix of vegetables and wine and the broken down vegetable puree acts as the sauce,” he confides. King Sue products are not only popularly available and dependable, they are also very versatile. “The dried pork feet are truly excellent for beans, fabada, and stews along with Spanish chorizos for Filipino-Spanish combinations.”

“The King Sue burgers can be redone with herbs to create meatball, while the luncheon meat has hundreds of applications as fillings for Vietnamese and German cooking,” enthused Chef Gene. But the best part of this, however, is that King Sue having withstood the test of time and changing markets, is also very reasonably priced for such top quality.

Hobby cooks and consultant could readily resort to King Sue when their or their client’s budgets get a bit tight so as to avoid sacrificing taste and flavor. Thus, the only Ten Outstanding Young Men Awardee for Culinary Arts, advised homemakers, chefs, and restaurateurs:

“Before you think deli items, take a second look at your King Sue products because they have great applications for reasonably priced ingredients with good quality.”

Indeed, King Sue is synonymous to quality. As a fifth-generation business started in 1930 by Mr Cu Un Kay who began by selling whole leg Chinese hams in Chinatown. “The name comes from King, meaning ‘royalty,’ and Sue, meaning ‘small,’ shares Mr Richie King, VP for Marketing, “because my grandfather who is small in physical stature, has big dreams for his family.”

Thus, after 89 years, King Sue, which was incorporated in 1970, has diversified from whole leg hams to sausages and cold cuts to other meat products. “Today, the company boasts of a variety of quality meat products, ranging from traditional hams to smoked bacons and sausages, as well as traditional favorites tocino, longganisa, and sisig,” adds Mr King.

King Sue, however, continues to step up its game by reaching further into the high-end and more health-conscious market. In 2019 it launches its Kaiser Deli Brand, which offers ultra-premium sausages, bacons, and hams for the most discriminating clients. All King Sue products are both GMP and HACCCP certified.

Maintaining quality and supplying the market demand is easy for King Sue because everything’s made in house using state-of-the-art German equipment. “But, even with these high-tech machinery, preparation for the Christmas season starts in August for the whole bone Chinese hams,” confessed Mr King. “It takes a month to properly cure whole bone, which still needs to be smoked then cooked. It takes patience to perfect them.”

Major supermarkets—SM, Robinson’s, and Puregold—as well as hotels and restaurants from La Trinidad, Metro Manila, through Bicol carry King Sue products, which are distributed nationally through distribution partners.

“King Sue moves forward in 2019 with another milestone on top of its high-end line,” opens Ms Romana Go, VP for Human Resources, “by slowly converting to merit-based management. Although the company remains a family business, we’ve started hiring outside employees for key management positions—Of course, the recipes from our grandfather and the tradition of making hams remains a family secret.”

Chef Gene Gonzalez, who is the consultant responsible for the success of some 60 food establishments/businesses and a member of the London-based International Wine and Food Society, has personally witnessed the versatility of King Sue for all occasions and cooking needs.

Thus, Chef Gene’s world-class expertise and impeccable taste shares with us one of the secrets of his delicious traditional dishes at home, innovative meals at Café Ysabel, and creative recipes for the Center for Asian Culinary Studies: King Sue’s Chinese ham, bacon, and dried pork feet along with a delightful array of new meat products!

Every kitchen will surely take on a new level with by having King Sue as its old reliable partner for its meat needs. Without a doubt, King Sue products are as good for the holiday table as they are for exciting everyday meals, special dinner spreads, and catering needs not just this Christmas but through the years to come!
