Being Courageous May Not Always Be Easy — But These Women Are Proving It Can Be Done

Canva & The Purposeful Creative celebrate courage and persistence on International Women’s Day

“What am I doing with my life?”, “Am I falling behind?” and “How can I make my life truly matter?”. These are some of the questions that often pop up in the minds of women around the world - and sometimes, not having the answer can be frustrating.

Courageous women in leadership shared what it’s like to face these questions as part of “Existential Courage,” an International Women’s Day event held by The Purposeful Creative in partnership with global design platform
Canva (https://canva.link/2VF5DrK)
Held at Canva’s Philippines headquarters, the event brings people together to share real-life stories of what it’s like to bring purpose and passion to what you do, and all the struggles that come with it.
“We want this event to celebrate hope, courage, and persistence. We want to show young people examples and stories of how we can and should keep on creating & doing things despite and because of the times we live in,” shared Arriane Serafico, founder of The Purposeful Creative and author of Existential Courage, a book released last December under Summit Books.
“I started at Canva in 2015 where I was the first recruiter based in the Philippines. Here, I helped to grow the local team to over 100 amazing individuals. Today, we’re a team of 250 working to empower everyone in the Philippines, and around the globe, to achieve their goals through powerful messaging designed with Canva. Our culture is testament to the amazing impact women continue to create in the workplace,” said Yani Hornilla-Donato, country manager of Canva Philippines (https://canva.link/39pZxje).
“It’s important to us that women are represented on every level, in every team. We not only embrace but also celebrate gender diversity and inclusion,” added Donato.
Held at Canva’s headquarters in Makati, Existential Courage brings together a range of young people to hear from a panel of women in leadership.

On Finding Courage and Purpose

Over 150 attendees were treated to meaningful conversations with inspirational women leaders who, just like them, have gone through the journey of self-doubt and self-discovery.
Audrey Pe, founder and executive director of WiTech (Women in Tech), Ayen Dela Torre, co-founder of Where To Next, and Trina Tanlapco, corporate executive and founder of A Little Montessori, shared what it takes to be a true influencer in an increasingly digital world and how one can use her power to impact a community. Pe, Dela Torres, and Tanlapco all echoed what the attendees needed to hear: that in a world where your social media following seems to be the standard for influence, one can still be an ‘influencer’.
“It’s not about followers, it’s about putting yourself out there,” was the key takeaway from the panel discussion.
Anna Oposa, Chief Mermaid of Save The Philippine Seas, and Carmel Valencia, Head of Corporate Communication and Sustainability at L'Oreal, led another meaningful panel discussion with Donato to shine light on the importance of using one’s voice even if that voice might be drowned by a million others. They also shared tips for women to step up and change things for the better, especially for those in leadership positions.
When asked about their advice for young people who feel like they don’t have power, Oposa posed a thought-provoking insight: “It’s not about if it’s possible. It’s about ‘how do I make it possible?’
Donato, a leader of over 250 Canva employees, encourages her team to not be scared to speak up. She said, “If there is an absence of anything in the office, don’t take it as the absolute truth. Challenge it.”
Valencia who has been with L’Oreal for 16 years knew what it was like to be a small voice in a big room back when she was still starting in the global company. She advised the audience to find like-minded allies. Just because you want to change the world doesn’t mean you have to do it on your own.”
Together with author of Paano Ba ‘Toand Founder of She Talks, Asia Bianca Gonzales, and Rags2Riches Founder Reese Fernandez, Serafico discussed how women can keep persisting no matter the challenges and ways in which to find inspiration when there seems to be none. For them, purpose is not something that you have to find, it’s something that you bring.
Gonzales, Fernandez, and Serafico highlighted that sometimes, people stay where they are for the wrong reasons. Fernandez’s journey as a social entrepreneur, for example, has always been driven by her principle. “Every decision I make can affect someone in a positive way,” Fernandez said. Gonzales advised the audience to work hard, share opportunities with others, wait for the right season for things to happen in your life, and to maintain a growth mindset.
“We want to create more conversations about Existential Courage. We want to break out of our bubble, and to stop only preaching to the choir. Existential Courage was an afternoon of fun, mentorship, and meaningful conversations for passionate, creative, curious and purposeful individuals,” Serafico added.
Want to honor the courageous women in your life? Canva has released an additional 50 design templates (https://www.canva.com/templates/search/generation-equality/), encouraging its design community around the world to celebrate, praise and unite with women this International Women’s Day. On enhancing my physical looks - skin-friendly make-ups and natural ways to look good and feel better

I am really not a fan of make-ups. I believe that natural beauty shines better without cover-ups. I also didn't even bother to use make-ups due to the fact that my skin is so sensitive that it easily gets rashes, redness, and other minor allergies. But as years passes by, there were a lot of innovations made for make-ups so they would suit any type of skin.

When I turned 30, I saw a big difference in the texture of my skin, especially on the face. I have a normal skin and a morena complexion that is why I get envious of those who have naturally whiter skin. Fairer skin makes someone look prettier, let's accept the fact. That's when I realize, I need some minimal cover-ups to boost my self-confidence.

That's when I started looking for make-ups with more natural ingredients and dermatologically tested. And here are some of those that I found skin-friendly:

1. This is a pressed powder in natural shade. It keeps my morena skin natural-looking all day long. It keeps my face oil-free for longer hours. It does not cause irritations, unlike other pressed powders that I have tried that's why I stick to it and have been using this brand for 2 years now.

2. These are the Colour Collection lippies. It is enriched with vitamin E that keeps the lips glowing and hydrated throughout the day. It lasts longer than other brands and it has a lot of shades to choose from. I love this line of lippies products because a lot of shades match my complexion.

3. I still don't have this mascara on hand because I have just ordered it online 2 days ago, but I have already tried it because a friend of mine uses this brand and she lets me try it. This is a volumizing mascara which lasts up to 14 hours. It is hypoallergenic and I am sure I will have a great time using this so my eyes could get a little fiercer.

While searching online for mascara, I came across a site containing a review of Idollash http://www.eyelash-growth.com/reviews/idollash/. It caught my attention because I thought that is a mascara made of natural ingredients, but it's not. Surprisingly, it is a growth serum to enhance eyelashes and this is now included among my wishlist so that sooner or later, I will no longer be needing mascara anymore.

How about you? Do you also use makeup? What are your preferences for make-ups?

World Class Manufacturing Demands Standards, Consistency and Transparency

It is a pivotal time for nutrition companies across the world as more and more people take aim at making healthy living a priority. As the nutrition and vitamin industry rapidly expands, manufacturers are rushing to keep up with the pace of product demand. Unfortunately, many laboratories and facilities operate in isolation and seldom receive independent technical evaluation to measure their compliance and performance in manufacturing. Increased product demand should never jeopardize high standards for quality and now more than ever, manufacturers must be transparent and consistent in their processes.

So how can nutritional products manufacturers achieve product quality, consistency and transparency?

In order to achieve this goal, a company must start with the sourcing of high-quality ingredients and continue through the meticulous production and advanced testing of every finished product.  Once a company has made the decision to achieve these high standards, having the process, products, laboratories, and scientists certified and accredited by independent, third party organizations, such as International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and National Sanitation Foundation (NSF), is vital to helping customers trust the company’s commitment to quality.

The commitment to quality and achieving the goal of consistency and transparency is by no means a quick or inexpensive endeavor. Those who embark on meeting these goals will need to make significant investment in laboratories, testing equipment, facilities, ingredients and scientific talent, to ultimately meet the rigorous testing standards and facility compliance audits set by ISO and NSF.

For example, at Herbalife Nutrition, the program begins with the cultivation, collection and processing of ingredients, then blending them with other ingredients and finally packaging the blended powders into finished package containers.  At each factory, raw materials are quarantined upon arrival and sampled for Quality Control testing. Materials are only released for production after passing a comprehensive set of Quality tests. Quality Assurance personnel monitor the process by checking critical steps in production by utilizing state-of-the art analytical equipment to ensure product quality and uniformity.

Some examples of the latest analytical technologies and laboratory instrumentation to analyze raw materials and finished products that a nutritional company would make include equipment and instruments such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC’s), Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS),

Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP), Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) for DNA testing.

So why is certification and accreditation important for nutritional companies?

When a company is able to secure ISO17025 accreditation, it means that the company adheres to strict standards for the technical competency of laboratory scientific personnel, the accuracy of microbiology and chemistry testing methods, and the validation of equipment.

ISO17025 accreditation also gives the company confidence in its procedures and provides extra assurance to consumers that the company’s laboratory tests are very accurate and reliable. And while this accreditation is not required, companies committed to the goal of quality, consistency, and transparency should seek to achieve the ISO17025 high standards that will go a long way to create an industry standard on behalf of consumers.

Similarly, the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF), an accredited, independent third-party certification body, performs regular on-site audits of facilities.  NSF conducts tests of federally regulated Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP’s) and certifies that products made at a facility are produced consistently and in accordance with the applicable regulations, ensuring that products continue to meet specifications and label claims.

In summation, companies should begin to adopt the philosophy that they need to operate through a policy of continuous improvements, and laboratory accreditation provides an additional mechanism for independent benchmarking. With ISO accreditation and NSF certification, customers can be confident that a nutrition company’s products and facilities meet international standards for product quality, testing and safety.

Grolier : Over a Hundred Years of Nurturing your Child's Multiple Intelligence

Grolier is one of the largest U.S. publishers of general encyclopedias. It was founded in 1909 and for over a hundred years, it continuously creates educational stuff to support the needs of the kids to further learning and comprehension.

Wayback 2007, I bought my firstborn a pencil-shaped Grolier laptop to enhance her speech and for her to easily memorize letters and numbers. The laptop also teaches shapes, spelling and writing the alphabet. It also features nursery rhymes. That was where my first child got her first dose for children's songs.

My firstborn is now 12 and she is one of the class top students. I can't really say that the Grolier laptop has contributed a lot to her knowledge because I was a hands-on while my kid was growing up especially when she entered school but I am sure it somehow helped in a way or another.

When Grolier Philippines International held The Grolier Carnival Fair in Festival Mall, I got so excited to see what they have in store after more than a decade. They had a lot of fun activities such as a magic show, inflatable fun cube, interactive learning corner, and face painting - all for free. They also offered a free assessment of a child’s multiple intelligences and kids get a free book after plus a chance to win Grolier Interactive Materials in the raffle.

They also introduced one of their newest products the Grolier - Keymatic which is a tool for automatic recall of basic math facts. The Keymatic set is an interactive device, with workbooks and pens to build confidence and proficiency in numbers and basic arithmetic.

It aligns with the very popular Singapore Maths which teaches the kids all about numbers the strategic way and not through memorization.

Grolier aims to continuously power your child's imagination thru innovative educational materials that can be enjoyed at the comfort of the home. I am so happy to be the first few customers to get the Keymatic set. It's a fun learning material that both parents and kids will enjoy. It can be a tool for a nice bonding activity for the family, too.

An online shop to run to once you ran out of ink for your HP printer

Last holiday season, my ink supply got almost depleted due to numerous printing activities, both personal & business-related. This may sound OA, but I honestly can't live without ink on my HP printer for a day. My kids need print-outs for school almost every day and I use them for my small printing business at home. I can't leave the house at once to buy cartridges to the nearest mall or bookstore, because I still have a lot of things to do, online and offline; so I decided to browse HP pages to look for answers. I found out that they have a program called Order-a-Cartridge. It's a fast doorstep delivery with more options to purchase print supplies. HP Order-a-cartridge allows us to conveniently order and replenish ink, toner, paper and printer supplies without leaving the seat. Depending on location, anyone can order print supplies via the internet, email, telephone or HP reseller.

Here's how I ordered via the internet:

First I created an account on HP SureSupply website  https://h22203.www2.hp.com/SureSupply/account/create

Then I searched for the cartridge number (mine is 685 for HP 5525 printer)

I chose to buy Combo 4-pack which consists of 4 ink cartridges (black, cyan, magenta & yellow). Aside from I would save more than a hundred peso compared to buying individual ink tanks, the shipping fee is waived for orders P1,000.00 and up nationwide.

After adding the item to the basket, the site then redirected me to a third party web site that will process my order, Integrated Computer Systems Inc.; then I paid my order thru Paypal.

I received an automated email regarding the confirmation of my order and the completion of payment (January 09, 2016, Saturday).  Then, the morning of January 11, 2016, Monday I received an acknowledgment email from ICS staff and told me that the item will be delivered 1 - 2 working days. On January 13, 2016, 3PM I received my order thru LBC.

I am so happy with my first order from HP SureSupply and ICS Click2buy website. I didn't just save money but I saved time and effort, which is really essential to a work-at-home Mom like me. From now on, I will be one of their loyal customers. Please take note too, that I compared the prices from other online shops (eg. Lazada, National Bookstores, etc) and even from physical shop before finally deciding to buy from ICS - ICS Click2buy has the lowest price.

To all HP users out there, I highly recommend ICS. Know more about ICS on the web http://click2buy.ics.com.ph

Why Invest on Laminate Flooring for your home improvement?

Buying new flooring represents a huge investment for any homeowner. If you are not sure actually what look you want in your home, it can be hard to pick between flooring styles. You might be debating whether laminate or carpet would be best. Perhaps you are thinking about whether or not you can afford to go with old hardwood. If you are looking for an affordable flooring that provides style and durability, you might be top served by considering laminate.

Getting to know laminate flooring

Laminate flooring is composed of 4 basic layers. The wear layer is filled with aluminum oxide and is designed to resist, scratches, tear, and wear. The decor layer is imprinted with any of a range of stone, hardwood, or tile designs. The core layers offers laminates bulk and adds extra resistance to dents. The end backer layer gives extra stability and support.

Because laminate flooring is constructed from these 4 special layers, it is much more resistant to scratches and dents than true hardwood flooring. Definitely, laminate flooring is also significantly less costly than stone or hardwood. Pick laminate when you want stylish, durable flooring that would not drive you into debt.

Pick laminate for durability

Many homeowners pick laminate because it is one of the most strong types of flooring accessible on the market today. Unlike hardwood, laminate is not prone to dents and scratches from daily, regular use. Unlike carpet, laminate does not stain easily and would not start to unravel or fray at edges and seams. Further, laminate floors are estimated to last between twenty to thirty years in most residential settings.

Thanks to their capability to resist scratches and dents, laminate floors are the best choices for top-traffic areas such as bathrooms and kitchens. They also make a remarkable choice for attics, basements, and additions.

Choosing laminate for ease of care

Ease of care is another best reason that many homeowners pick laminate. Laminate floors will look bright and clean as long as you:

► Quickly wipe up spills and wet marks left by feet

► Use throw mats or rugs at all entrances to your rooms

► Use a dust vacuum or mop regularly

► Permits your floors to dry fully after cleaning

Choosing laminate flooring for style
Definitely, laminate provides more than durability, affordability and easy care. Nowadays, showrooms boasts a big range of laminate styles designed to look like real stone, hardwood and tile.
