12 Subs of Christmas, a year-ender treat from Subway Philippines

2020 is really extraordinary. Life has never been this challenging and this year did not only challenged a few groups of people, industry, or a country but it has affected all of us in ways big or small. Yet, there are things to be thankful for because we have seen compassion, care for others, helping hands, spirits lifting other spirits - to name a few.

Subway Melt and Steak and Cheese ordered from Subway ATC

So I guess before we bid goodbye to 2020 we deserve some treat, really awesome treat from Subway Philippines, for making this far and for surviving all the odds.

You may be wondering how was I able to avail myself when I am from Laguna where there is no Subway branch near us that offers the promo. As the saying goes "if there's a will there's a way" I found the way to take out my favorite Subway Melt and Steak & Cheese, via booking with Angkas. My rider ordered in Subway Alabang Town Center branch smoothly. Once he reached the branch, he called me and then I talked to the staff about my order. The staff was very accomodating of my request and they are very knowledgeable of the promo mechanics. My orders were securely packed and they reached the destination in very good condition including the drinks. Of course, thanks to the rider too for being so patient because it was raining hard that day.

Before this pandemic, Subway has been my and my husband's go-to place when we want some fresh and delicious sandwiches. We just love their succulent meats and variations of bread to choose from. You can almost personalize your sandwich at Subway, which makes dining more exciting. Even now that there is an ongoing pandemic, they still maintain their good service and the excitement of ordering in Subway has never lost.

To keep yourself updated on the ongoing and upcoming awesome deals from Subway Philippines, follow their social media pages.

It was an extravaganza of excitement, charisma, and elegance representing the artistry of The Tablespread Co., Mix Balloonery and Surprises, and Shabby Chic Style Studio. The elegant lights and soothing music were craftsmanship from Beats N Snap. RAF Events and Photobooth, Troika, Audrey's Pastries, and Nicole Lim Ph made precious memories for eyes and palates.

The fancy event with flowers and bouquets from La Bella Rosa, Project Art Ph, Belle Fleurs Manila, Mary Mars Flowers and Gifts, and VGrace Ph felt dreamy. The gorgeous Steffi Blair of Pretty Looks, beautiful Haze Gonzales of HG Studio & dazzling Jose Sacramento of CCYG Korean restaurant was a significant part of the Bride and Rose reopening event.

China Daily Gathers Media Leaders and Experts To Discuss Reporting and Operations Strategies Amid the Pandemic

Co-organized by China Daily, University of International Business and Economics, Shanghai International Studies University and Asia News Network, a panel discussion session themed “COVID-19 and Impacts on the Media” was held virtually on Wednesday, December 23, 2020. Media leaders and experts joined the event online and discussed how reporting strategies and operations of the media have changed amid the COVID- 19 pandemic.

Mr. Zhou Shuchun, Standing Committee member of the CPPCC National Committee and Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of China Daily, delivered the welcoming remarks. He said Chinese media colleagues have braved hardship and danger to record heart-warming battles to tell the story of China’s fight against the pandemic, which boosted the morale of frontline warriors.

Later, Dr. John Gong, Professor of Economics, University of International Business and Economics; and Dr. Debao Xiang, Professor of School of Journalism and Communication, Shanghai International Studies University; shared their insights on the topic.

John Gong pointed out that the model of the media is changing. “Now people are more and more receiving messages through relays of information. What this difference makes is that, in order for the message to be relayed, there is a tendency for the message to go extreme. You’re moving into a world where you have those short snackable video clips kinds of product that people tend to use or like to watch. There’s no difference between fact and opinion-editorial. It is now even more difficult for readers to get information that is objective, fact-based. Traditional media need to tighten their seatbelt and stick to what they are doing. If you have to sacrifice your journalistic standard for traffic volume, this is deplorable. The government needs to take actions. I think we have quite a strong government here in China that looks after this disinformation and misinformation,” he said.

Debao Xiang pointed out that the pandemic’s impact on the industry is both negative and positive. “There is a decrease in the average media budget due to the coronavirus. Around 35,000 journalists in the US have been laid off and faced pay cuts amid the pandemic. This is not only influenced by COVID-19 but also the impact of the new technologies. But audience trust for journalists has increased ...this is a good phenomenon for the journalism industry,” he said.

Dr. DJ Clark and Pana Janviroj moderate the panel discussion.

Insight Spotlight was followed by a panel discussion which was moderated by Mr. Pana Janviroj, Executive Director, Asia News Network; and Dr. DJ Clark, Multimedia Director, China Daily Asia Pacific. Prominent leaders from media companies and experts joined the panel discussion. They were: Mr. Zhiming Chen, Deputy Director of International News Department, China Daily; Mr. Choo Joon Kian, Deputy Editor in Chief, Sin Chew Daily; Mr. Philip Golingai, News Editor, The Star; Mr. Ziaul Hoque, News Editor, The Daily Star; Ms. Vivian Hsiao, Reporter, China Post; Mr. Min Thaw Htut, Executive Director, Eleven Media Group; Mr. Nitish Kapoor, ANN Editorial Coordinator, The Statesman; Ms. Juliet Labog-Javellana, Associate Publisher, Philippine Daily Inquirer; and Mr. Ly Tayseng, CEO, Phnom Penh Post, Cambodia. They examined the implications of COVID-19 on the media industry. They discussed the future development of the media industry.

Pana Janviroj pointed out that many Asian media appear to be weathering the storms better than expected. But more importantly there is a consensus from bottom to top of the newsrooms, despite the dwindling resources and advertising revenue plunges, the relentless determination to do their jobs. “Those are to bring accurate reportings to readers and keep them well informed. The reporters are determined to do their jobs because readers and public at large appreciate their works. The Covid-19 era has endowed long awaited public appreciation of mainstream national media and journalism,” he said.

Zhiming Chen highlighted that technology has played a key role to contain the 2020 virus. “As a news organization with global reach, China Daily is fortunate to have offices and reporters worldwide. This means, during critical moments in COVID-19 coverage, we have nose, eyes, ears on spot. This kind of local presence was invaluable for us,” he said.

Choo Joon Kian said Sin Chew Daily has not laid off or had pay cuts for anyone. The company has officially launched a membership scheme. He said that the number of members has increased to 240,000 and their e-papers have increased by 5 percent. The company plans to set up a paywall on Apple next year.

Philip Golingai said, “For me, with the retrenchment in most of the media organizations in Malaysia and also downsizing and some closures, having at least three to five news organizations is very promising for us. Roughly, that’s the situation for us.”

Ziaul Hoque said the COVID-19’s impact has been unsettling. “Our revenue went down two- thirds. There have been job cuts but they are not related to the pandemic. For workload, we have to adapt to these situations because it is the demand of the time. I think it’s a positive thing, in the sense that what we had to do, it expedited the process (to digitalization). We had to remodel business models,” he said.

Vivian Hsiao said she saw a bump in the number of readers in the beginning. “When covering the COVID-19 pandemic, our readers really needed to know what’s going on. I think the responsibility of the media increased greatly this year, but we have to be careful in covering the pandemic and provide accurate information because we wanted to give our readers the current information. But we also wanted to avoid creating unnecessary panic among them as well,” she said.

Min Thaw Htut said revenues from print advertising have declined. But that decline has been covered by digital investments. “Even though our core content is news, we have also diversified our content. The main lesson I have learned is that we have to remain trustworthy, reliable, and independent to do our main core functions. The other thing that we have to be mindful of is that the attention for eyeballs is very competitive. How do we survive this? It’s by creating good quality news,” he said.

Nitish Kapoor said revenue was going down at the start of the pandemic. “But with an increase in internet users, we have gained revenue. Eventually, we’ll get long-term benefits for sure. It will surely come back to us,” she said.

Juliet Labog-Javellana pointed out that one of the positive impacts of COVID-19 for the media is it provided the impetus to accelerate digital transformation and innovation. “So what the Inquirer did was to move quickly to different platforms like we hosted more than a dozen webinars; print journalists went into podcast....we published newsletters. Because most of our staff are working from home so maybe the big challenge during this pandemic is that media’s access to government officials has been limited because there are no face-to-face press conferences. Officials can mute you online. There’s no opportunity to grill officials. The Inquirer had to leverage our credibility to counter the ‘disinfodemic’ about COVID-19 which posed a danger to people’s lives,” she said.

Ly Tayseng said, “This year, we didn’t have to retrench staff. This year, our advertising for printed media

was reduced by 30 percent, but our subscription number has remained the same. Our digital revenue is increasing, but it is not significant. If the advertising revenue keeps dropping, I think there may be an impact for next year.”

Defensil Isopropyl Alcohol welcomes Richard Gutierrez, Sarah Lahbati, and kids as brand ambassadors

Defensil 70% Solution Isopropyl Alcohol continues its campaign to be Filipino families’ ally in germ protection in the new normal as they welcome newlyweds, Richard Gutierrez and Sarah Lahbati, together with their adorable kids Zion and Kai, as their brand ambassadors.

Adjusting to the New Normal with Defensil Isopropyl Alcohol

Richard and Sarah, who got married in a solemn ceremony earlier this year, celebrated their new life together in quarantine. While being stuck at home was an opportunity for them to spend more time together as a family—planting, painting, and playing all sorts of games, they also needed to go through a lot of adjustments as a family.

One adjustment that they had to do was to look for better ways to protect their family against germs, with the threat of the virus still continuing up until now. They found their newest ally in Defensil 70% Solution Isopropyl Alcohol, which promises a higher level of protection against germs and viruses.

“We believe in innovative products. Not only does Defensil come from a company we trust, Defensil 70% Solution Isopropyl Alcohol is also recommended by experts,” said Sarah.

“And since we use alcohol more frequently to sanitize, I also like how it not only kills germs and bacteria but also has moisturizer to not dry our skin,” she added.

One way to prevent the spread of germs is regular disinfection of hands and high touch surfaces using rubbing alcohol. To provide a higher level of defense against germs in the new normal, the Philippine Society for Microbiology is recommending Defensil 70% Solution Isopropyl Alcohol.

Created by Beauty Elements Ventures Inc, Defensil 70% Solution Isopropyl Alcohol kills 99.9% of germs to give Richard and Sarah’s family the peace of mind that they are well-defended. It starts to kill germs on contact and upon constant use, provides up to 12-hour protection.

New Normal Holidays

Celebrating the holidays is surely going to be different for the Gutierrez family this year. For Richard and Sarah, social distancing is something that they’re keeping in mind as they celebrate the holiday season, along with making sure that everyone sanitizes and disinfects using Defensil.

The family wishes to go on a local holiday trip with the family bringing their new ally, Defensil. With this, Sarah shares three simple tips to fellow parents on how to keep their family safe from germs during the holiday season.

First, social distancing is a must. Second, always wear a mask. It is important for parents to teach their kids the importance of wearing masks, which help to prevent the transmission of the virus. And, lastly, always disinfect with alcohol that makes sure you and the family are well-defended— like Defensil Isopropyl Alcohol.

To know more about Richard and Sarah’s newest ally, Defensil 70% Solution Isopropyl Alcohol, visit their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/defensil.philippines

Truth x Lakay Gaming Smashes Php 50,000 Donation Drive Goal to Raise Financial Aid for Those Affected by Typhoon Rolly and Ulysses

Since officially launching the “Truth x Lakay Gaming” official Facebook Gaming page of ONE Championship Filipino mixed martial arts heroes and World Champions, the following has grown immensely with thousands of fans wanting to witness their favorite stars play the most popular games of today.

It’s been a tremendous platform so far, and one that has been recently mobilized to raise funds for charity.

Launched on 2 December, ONE Championship and ONE Esports (who manages the page) partnered with Save the Children Philippines in a fundraising activity to help victims of the recent string of typhoons that ravaged parts of the country.

An official message on the page wrote:

“We are absolutely heartbroken to see the devastation brought about by Typhoon Rolly and Ulysses. That’s why we are joining Save the Children Philippines to raise funds for aid and relief. Join us on Sat, 5 Dec with two charity streams and stand a chance to win exclusive merchandise from ONE Esports when you make a donation! We will also be giving away 20% discount codes for shop.oneesports.gg/ to all donors. Watch us stream, and make a donation at bit.ly/truthlakaysave. Let us help where we can.”

Stars such as ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera, ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua “The Passion” Pacio, former champions Eduard Folayang and Kevin Belingon came together to live steam to raise funds to aid those affected by Typhoons Rolly and Ulysses that hit the Philippines in late 2020.

The country, which lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire, is subject to numerous natural disasters, including powerful typhoons, multiple times every year. The country welcomes support through all means, and this latest campaign has certainly leveraged its athlete star power.

“I think this is an amazing opportunity to give back to the people and the fans who have supported our careers,” said the 24-year-old World Champion Pacio.

“We are glad to be able to help where we can, even in our own small way. I’m sure the funds we’ve raised here will be of great use, and we’re looking forward to participating in more of these campaigns in the future. It’s important that we give each other a helping hand, especially in these difficult times. We’re willing to do what we can do for our fellow Filipinos.”

The campaign (https://donate.savethechildren.net/campaigns/truthlakay) has since shattered its Php 50,000 goal, raising over Php 55,541 currently with two days remaining in the two week donation drive.

“Wealth is not to feed our egos, but to feed the hungry and to help people help themselves.” – Andrew Carnegie

Such is the case for health and wellness distributor, Rising Era Dynasty Inc. (RED) as they reach out to Typhoon Rolly and Ulysses victims in Marikina, Tiwi in Albay, San Mateo, Rizal and Soliven, Isabela in Cagayan Valley. In every strong storm that hits the country, these places have always fallen deep into the waters that is why RED chose to aid them with necessary goods to help them ease with the suffering they went through.

In its goal to provide relief efforts to families and individuals severely affected by these back-to-back storms, RED has set up donation drives to those hard-hit areas mentioned.

Usually, in cases like these, what the victims need are essential goods and food to keep them strong so they can stand up again and pick up where they fell off. RED understands their plight and sends off staff to provide water, rice, noodles, canned goods, and other essentials to around 800 families all in all.

FamiLigtas calls for increased visibility on GBV against LGBTQ+

In light of 18 Days of Activism, a campaign for no violence against women and children that runs from November 25 to December 12 each year, FamiLigtas reminds us to also include the LGBTQ+ community.

FamiLigtas is a digital campaign against gender-based violence (GBV) in the Philippines during the time of COVID-19. But because GBV is most commonly associated with spousal and domestic violence against women, the experiences of violence among lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders, queers, and other non-binary individuals are often left unheard.

“We advocate for the equal treatment for all persons, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression,” said Sabrina Gacad of Lunas Collective. “While there are numerous urgent challenges facing LGBTQ+ persons worldwide, there are many windows of opportunity to promote and protect their human rights.”

As the LGBTQ+ community continues to fight for the passage of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression (SOGIE) Equality Bill in congress, more and more non-binary people continue to experience discrimination, and even violence, at home and in public spaces.

A lack of protection for LGBTQ+ persons

According to Human Rights Watch, only 15% of Filipinos are living in areas with ordinances against discrimination and violence on the basis of SOGIE. The same report also states that the low reporting and intervention of this kind of GBV is caused by the negative messages that the victim-survivors are receiving from authorities.

Additionally, there is little to no statistical data on the cases of GBV against the LGBTQ+ in the Philippines. Unlike violence against women and children, which has annual report from the Philippine National Police and other government and non-government organizations, GBV cases against LGBTQ+ are often excluded due to low reporting rate and the lack of laws to protect them against discrimination and violence.

“The barangay is an important player in creating a violence-free community. And we need to remember that it is our responsibility to keep the community safe not just for women, but for all gender identities as well,” said local barangay representative.

Kasama ang LGBTQ+ sa pamilya

The family is the most common perpetrator of GBV in the Philippines—whether targeted against women, children, or LGBTQ+ persons. According to the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, LGBTQ+ children are often verbally, emotionally, sexually, and physically abused by their own families. This is due to the notion that the children’s non-conforming gender attitudes are unnatural and immoral.

“Due to the community quarantines brought on by the COVID pandemic, GBV victim-survivors of all gender identities are trapped inside their homes with their abusers,” said a representative from LGBTQ+ org. “That’s why we are campaigning for a safe Filipino family. So that we can keep our homes safe, LGBTQ+ persons included.”

Canon Philippines Unveils new PIXMA G Series Printers to Boost Productivity for Home and Small Businesses

Canon expands its PIXMA Ink Efficient G Series line-up with the latest refillable ink tank printers combining high ink volumes and low cost printing. Standout features in the new G Series include the drip-free, hands-free ink refilling mechanism, and a user-replaceable maintenance cartridge design to ensure minimum downtime and maximum productivity for homes and businesses.

More Ink than Standard Ink Cartridges

Right out of the box, the new Canon G series includes enough ink to last years for most users, delivering up to 7,600 pages for black-only documents, and 7,700 pages for color documents. This presents an easy choice for users who need to print more without hesitation and has the potential to transform traditional printing habits completely.

The printers are suitable for general use or photo printing, with the dedicated use of pigment black ink for crisp and sharp text in text documents and line drawings, and automatic switching to only dye-ink color channels when there is a need to produce full-borderless glossy photos up to A4 sizes.

Drip-free, Hands-Free Ink Refilling Process

To avoid unintended filling of colored inks into the wrong tank openings, the new Canon G series features new ink bottle designs, with outlet nozzles that fit only in the respective color tank well openings. Ink filling is fast, drip-free, and hands-free, allowing users to complete the entire unboxing and setup process in just minutes while maintaining a mess-free workstation.

An integrated ink tank design also keeps the printer footprint compact, while providing a clear visual indication of remaining ink levels.

Always Up and Running

The user-replaceable maintenance cartridge design of the new Canon G series will also save users numerous trips to authorized service facilities. Replacement of the maintenance cartridge and the subsequent automatic reset of the internal ink counter prolongs the printer lifetime well beyond conventional printers and ensures users can continue to print as intended with minimal downtime.
