What To Do When You’re Too Overwhelmed

At one point (or maybe more than a hundred points) in your life, things will become just too much. Too many items on your to-do list. Too much pressure from your boss. Too much anxiety over things you have no control over. Too many people in the room with you. Too much anger over a situation. Too many things on your mind. When faced with too much, here are some things that you can do.

Talk to God.

Don’t make this your last option. You don’t have to say a “formal” prayer. Make your prayers as normal as breathing. The more you talk to God, the more natural it will feel to turn to Him when things get too overwhelming.

Breathe in, breathe out.

The act of physically taking a deep breath and releasing it after a few seconds can help your brain and your heart slow down. Do this a few times until you feel calm enough to think with a clear head.

Step out/away.

If you need to leave a roomful of people, do it. If you need to walk away from a person you’re talking to, do it. When you need to leave that to-do list and walk around for a few minutes, do it. When you’re ready to face whatever needs to be dealt with, go back.

Read, watch, or listen to something.

It sometimes helps to do something that is so far from your current, overwhelming task just so you can get your bearings back. Read a few chapters from a non-school or non-work book. Watch a few minutes of your current favorite show. Listen to soothing (or rocking!) music. The idea is to get your mind off things, if only for a while.

Sleep.

Yes, sometimes, you just need to fully rest.

This is an excerpt from Dawns: A Weekly Devotional for Self-Care and Spiritual Growth, co-authored by Isa Garcia, Janina Marie Rivera, and Ida Torres. Five Home Fire Safety Tips to Protect Your Family

This Fire Prevention Month, learn how to prepare your family and keep them safe to avoid disaster from striking

Did you know that an average of 42 fire incidents occurs in the Philippines daily? This amounts to around ₱4.65 billion worth of damage every year. According to the Bureau of Fire Protection, the top causes of fire outbreaks in the Philippines are faulty electrical connections, lighted cigarette butts, and open flames.

Since most of us are staying home with our families during this time, it’s our responsibility to ensure that our haven and sanctuary remains free from such health hazards. This Fire Prevention Month, educate yourself and your family on fire safety measures. Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Here are five fire prevention measures you need to take:

Install smoke alarms

First things first: install a smoke alarm. These alarms can detect fire way before your nose can smell smoke. Early detection can save your house—and your loved ones’ lives.

Install smoke alarms on every floor, including inside bedrooms and living areas. Mount each unit on the ceiling or high up on walls. Don’t forget to test these out every month and change the batteries every year. You don’t want them to fail you when a fire actually breaks out. After ten years of use, replace each unit.

Try: X-SENSE Smoke Alarm, ₱1,500

Get fire extinguishers or blankets ready

Did you know that using water to extinguish fires isn’t fool-proof? Since oil and water don’t mix, using the latter to extinguish grease fires can actually cause it to spread. Additionally, water conducts electricity and you can get electrocuted if you try to douse an electrical fire.

Instead, invest in a fire extinguisher or fire blanket. Confused about which one to use? Smother smaller fires in the kitchen with a fire blanket. They’re less messy and won’t damage food items in your kitchen. For bigger, harder-to-reach fires, use a fire extinguisher. Make sure they’re available on each floor. Place them near the kitchen, garage, and any other exit routes.

Try: Daytech Fire Blanket, ₱489

Avoid open flames

Does your weekend pamper routine feature scented candles? Place your candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface, preferably at a distance from your bed, curtains, and other flammable items. To avoid flare-ups, light them far away from aircon vents or electric fans.

You might feel relaxed and ready for bed with soothing scents, but never doze off and leave your candles unattended. Consider switching to battery-operated candles if you have kids and pets who might accidentally knock them over.

Try: At Home LED Candle, ₱230

Keep all appliances in working order

If you’ve been squeezing the last ounce of life out of your old appliances, it’s time to put them to rest. You’re not saving money by continuing to use rickety appliances until they give out. The faulty machinery and frayed cables pose a fire hazard. A fire outbreak will end up being more expensive than a new appliance.

Most home fires start in the kitchen, so keep cooking appliances, in particular, functioning properly. For malfunctioning appliances, don’t attempt to use and call in a repairman as soon as possible. Replace if needed.

Try: Haier Cooking Range, ₱15,799

Create a fire escape plan

In the same way you practice fire drills at school or at the office, your family should craft its own home fire escape plan as well.

Establish primary and alternative escape routes from the house and pick at least two meeting spots in case family members get separated from each other. Teach everyone the Stop, Drop, and Roll method in the event that their clothes catch fire. Lastly, buy an emergency medical kit you can easily grab on your way out of the house.

Try: Mediplast Emergency Kit, ₱465

Keep yourself and your loved ones safe from harm with these doable tips. Taking such exhaustive measures might feel excessive, but as with everything else, prevention is better than cure. For emergencies, call the National Emergency Hotline at 911, or the Philippine Red Cross at 143.

6 Smart Ways to Encourage Exercise in Kids

One of the most positive aspects of exercise –beside health benefits– is that it can be really fun. Any kid who has spent summer afternoons outdoors, playing ball, skating or biking can confirm this. However, cars, technology, and entertainment have dramatically changed how much we move.

We are at a point where it is normal not to move during the day. We have normalized a sedentary lifestyle and thus are at risk of making decisions that are not good for the human body over time.

And when it comes to children and exercise, the picture is not getting any brighter. According to the World Health Organization, there are 41 million overweight or obese infants and young children. If current trends continue, that number will increase to 70 million by 2025.

Off the Couch and on the Field: Getting Our Kids to Move and Exercise

So how can we help create healthier lifestyles for kids? The younger your children develop physical activity and good nutrition habits, the more likely it is that they will maintain them for life.

Here are 6 ideas to get your kids off the couch and on their feet:

Make it a family activity.

Kids might be unwilling to exercise if they see it as an additional chore. But if you join them and make exercising part of spending quality time with the family, their attitude will most likely shift. Set an example: bike together, play catch or go on a family hike.

Get the TV out of their room.

It might be tempting for children to stay in bed and watch cartoons or play video games all day long, especially on vacations. To reduce the temptation, place the TV in the living room and suggest playing some active video games to make the most out of their screen-time.

Organize active play dates.

Kids feed on their peers’ company and energy, so why not invite some of their friends ice-skating or swimming? Plus, feeling part of a community and having strong social ties encourages physical activity.

Let your child lead.

Children are more likely to commit to something that was their idea in the first place, so let your child chose the activity the family will engage in. Whether it’s a basketball match or a dance party, try to be encouraging and empowering them to make these small choices.

Use exercise as a means.

Physical activity doesn’t always have to be the final goal, it can very well be the means. If you’re going to visit grandma or to the movies, why not bike or walk there?

Get pedometers for the family.

Kids enjoy measuring things up, so why not get a pedometer – a gadget that counts how many steps you take – for every family member and compare their numbers at the end of each day? A bit of healthy competition might make wonders for your kid’s motivation.

Remember to pair these activities with good, balanced nutrition. You can start your own backyard garden and get your kids involved in making breakfast or dinner. When discussing childhood obesity prevention, we need to focus on physical activity and healthy nutrition, but also on making sure kids feel motivated in a supportive environment.

Tips for a Sweeter Valentine's Season

Who said that the season of love is exclusive to romantic couples?

With Valentine's Day just a few days away, let’s change the game this year. After all, we learned how to love at home with family and friends. This Valentine's Day, there's no better way to celebrate love than by showing affection to the people close to our hearts and even strangers.

Spread positive vibes in ways you've never tried before! Here are some simple yet meaningful ideas to share the love just in time for the sweetest season!

  • Bake cupcakes for your loved one instead of buying flowers and chocolates.

Dark chocolates and red roses are so overrated. This time, be different and bake cupcakes for your loved one. Don't know how? No problem. The Internet has tons of baking recipes for first-timers. Whether you perfect it or not, your loved one will be thrilled with those cupcakes you baked from your heart.

  • Treat mom and dad to a relaxing massage and salon service.

The ultimate superheroes in your life deserve a break from all the headaches you may give them. Give mom a new haircut and treat dad to a foot spa. Spoil them further with a relaxing full-body massage to cap it off.

  • Call the nearest charity institution to ask how you can help.

Love grows in the family, so it makes sense to share it as one. Join outreach programs with the whole family (or even your friends!) to extend the love at home to those who need it the most. It's a different yet meaningful kind of bonding experience.

Similarly, donate your excess essentials to less fortunate individuals. This is a perfect way to give back and share the love this season, even with strangers!

  • Create new memories with a spontaneous trip.

It’s a fact-- the most unforgettable memories are created on the spur of the moment. So skip planning and pack your bags! It’s time to unleash the adventurous spirit in you! Take a random trip with your loved one, friends, or family. Drive to a place you have always wanted to explore. Or book a flight to a destination you have never been to. Celebrate love with adventure.

  • Practice proper hygiene habits (aka. don’t spread germs!).

Yes, you've read it right. Spreading love can also lead to spreading germs. Avoid this by simply practicing proper hygiene and washing your hands regularly.

Love is in the air, and so are germs! When you touch, hug, or kiss your loved ones, there's a big chance that you are spreading germs that could cause sickness.

Here’s an alarming fact from the first Philippines Handwashing Index (PHI): 7 out of 10 Filipinos say that they wash their hands after using the toilet, but in reality, only 2 out of 10 really do. PHI is a breakthrough study recently commissioned by Safeguard.

Keeping your loved ones safe from germs is a healthy way of showing how much you care. When you express your affection, be sure that you are spreading love and not germs. Wash your hands with Safeguard and water to keep them clean.

Your first line of defense against sickness-causing germs, Safeguard is clinically proven to provide up to 24 hours of germ protection. Washing your hands with Safeguard means a healthy Valentine’s celebration.

Empowering Smiles: Listerine Advocates #CompleteMouthProtection for National Oral Health Month

As this year’s National Oral Health Month officially begins, Listerine sets out on a mission to empower 110 million Filipinos to combat oral diseases and prioritize their overall oral health.

Taking care of your oral health extends beyond brushing alone. While brushing is a crucial part of your oral hygiene routine, it only cleans approximately 25% of your mouth, leaving behind billions of germs that can lead to oral health issues such as plaque, cavities, and gum problems. Dr. Ashley Barlow, Senior Director & Head of Medical & Safety Sciences at Kenvue Asia Pacific, elaborates on the most common oral health issues.

Increased Plaque Buildup:

Various changes occur in our bodies, and the oral cavity is no exception. One significant factor is the weakening of the immune system over time. In the context of overall oral health, this weakened immune response can facilitate bacterial growth and accumulation in the mouth, manifesting as plaque.

Cavities:

Cavities, also known as dental caries or tooth decay, are areas of damage on the surface of the teeth resulting from the breakdown of the enamel layer. When plaque builds up on the tooth surface, acids produced by plaque bacteria slowly erode the enamel, causing cavities. Untreated cavities can lead to pain, infections, and tooth sensitivity, resulting in discomfort during daily activities such as eating or speaking.

Gum Problems:

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an inflammatory condition affecting the tissues surrounding the teeth, primarily caused by the accumulation of plaque and bacteria from poor oral hygiene. If left untreated, severe gum disease can lead to gum recession and permanent tooth loss.

Dr. Barlow emphasizes, "At Listerine, we consistently champion the cause of good overall oral health, striving to free 110 million Filipino mouths from the grip of oral diseases. The conventional habit of relying solely on brushing, once deemed sufficient, no longer provides the comprehensive protection our mouths need. It's time to proactively examine our mouths for early signs of oral problems and embrace the regular use of Listerine. Witness the transformative impact of good oral hygiene and maintain healthy smiles for longer."

After brushing, ensure to follow up with a mouthwash like Listerine Total Care to provide up to 24-hour germ protection*, kill 99.9% of germs that cause plaque, cavities, and gum problems, and experience 5x more cleaning power than brushing and flossing alone.**

Listerine also collaborates with MacoyDubs and Mikee Reyes to inspire Filipinos to start protecting their mouths and adhere to using Listerine after every brush. MacoyDubs proudly shares, "Listerine has been a game-changer in providing #CompleteMouthProtection and maintaining good overall oral health. Since incorporating it into my daily oral hygiene routine, I've noticed a significant reduction in bacteria, ensuring my mouth feels clean and healthy. Thanks to Listerine, I can confidently say that my smile reflects not just my personality but also a testament to a healthier mouth."

Similarly, Mikee Reyes highlights his heightened awareness of thorough mouth cleaning when comparing the effectiveness of brushing alone to incorporating Listerine Total Care after brushing. “All this time I thought I was keeping my mouth clean just by brushing. Thanks to Listerine Total Care, I’m able to clean virtually up to 99.9% of my mouth, giving me the #CompleteMouthProtection I need to stay free from oral health issues.”

Besides making Listerine Total Care more accessible to Filipinos through retail partnerships, Listerine expands its reach during National Oral Health Month. For the first time since 2018, Listerine engages with 600 dental clinics and over 9,000 dentists nationwide, educating them on the science and superiority of mouthwash through talks and participation in various conventions. Listerine also participates in conventions held by the Philippine Dental Association and conducts sampling initiatives. Additionally, Listerine deploys dispensers in dental clinics and other high-traffic areas such as gyms and offices to encourage the habit of rinsing with Listerine twice daily.

Let's unite this National Oral Health Month to adopt a proactive approach to oral care. Listerine stands as a partner, encouraging everyone to take charge of their oral health journey and enjoy the benefits of a vibrant, healthy smile. Together, let's champion #CompleteMouthProtection and celebrate a month dedicated to nurturing our smiles and overall well-being. Visit the nearest Watsons or the official Listerine store on Shopee or Lazada to get your Listerine Total Care Mouthwash.

Why hire when you can DIY?

"Do it yourself" (DIY) is described as the method of building, modifying, or repairing things without the direct aid of experts or professionals. DIY activities can be enjoyable. It's satisfying to see items around our home or office with our personal touch. While it may be tiring to use raw or semi-raw materials for your desired project, the reward is worth it once you finish the job.

DIY is best for home improvement. We can use the components and materials that we want, we can choose the shapes, sizes, types, and colors that we want and we are able to achieve the result or product that we want.

The rise of DIY culture extends far beyond traditional areas like interior design, gardening, arts, and crafts, encompassing diverse fields such as child safety, fashion, and more. In DIY, there are no rigid standards or rules; success is measured by personal satisfaction with the finished product. This freedom allows individuals to express their creativity, explore new skills, and customize projects to their unique preferences and needs. Whether it's building furniture, creating home décor, or fashioning childproofing solutions, DIY empowers individuals to take control of their surroundings and unleash their creativity without constraints.

Why do people turn to DIY? Firstly, it's more affordable; materials can be sourced from the natural environment or recycled and upcycled. However, not all materials can be obtained locally, so there are shops where materials can be purchased for DIY activities, such as Simply Plastics. They are expert suppliers of plastic products and materials for various building needs, offering a cut-to-size service where products are tailored to exact specifications and delivered to your doorstep.

Hanabishi on Chinese New Year Traditions and Welcoming an Abundant Year

As the world welcomes the Year of the Wood Dragon, Cherish Ong-Chua, the VP for Finance and Marketing of Hanabishi Appliances, reflects on the traditions Filipino-Chinese families celebrate to usher in the Lunar New Year.

“The Chinese believe that abundance during Chinese New Year will carry on for the rest of the year. We observe traditions that help usher in blessings for the coming year and simultaneously drive away the misfortunes of the past year,” she shared.

Food and Abundance

One of these traditions is the preparation for the Lunar New Year’s Eve dinner, where families from different generations gather to share homemade delicacies.

On the dinner table, there are round fruits symbolizing good fortune. Ong-Chua added that they also prepare a bowl of rice and put ampao on it. Noodles are also a staple, symbolizing long life.

She further shared that some traditions focus on cleanliness.

“To get rid of the bad luck of the previous year, some of us would get a haircut,” Ong-Chua said. “But we forbid cleaning on the first day of the year as this might sweep away the good luck that would come in the New Year.”
