Canon Launches Back-to-School Promo and College Campus Tour for PIXMA MegaTank Printers

Canon Marketing Philippines recently launched an enticing promotion aimed at students for the back-to-school season during its Ready, Set, Print media event. The occasion also highlighted the latest additions to Canon’s PIXMA G series printer lineup, with a talk on creative printing led by Tippy Go of The Googly Gooeys.

To avail of this promo, the purchase must be registered on the Canon PH Delightful App. The student or guardian will need to upload a school ID or proof of enrollment for the current school year when registering the purchase under their account.

The tour will kick off at Adamson University from August 29 to 30, 2024, and will continue to visit other universities across the country from September through early October. Veteran Philanthropist and Emerging Entrepreneurs Honored at 2024 RVR Awards

Six distinguished individuals were honored at this year's Ramon V. del Rosario (RVR) Awards for their exemplary corporate citizenship and commitment to nation-building across various industries. The ceremony, held at The Fifth at Rockwell, celebrated business leaders who demonstrated that companies can be a force for good, contributing positively to society.

The RVR Awards feature two categories: the Nation Building Award and the Siklab Award. The Nation Building Award pays tribute to PHINMA founder Ambassador Ramon V. del Rosario, Sr.'s legacy of shaping modern Philippine industries by honoring pioneers in various fields. The Siklab Award recognizes emerging entrepreneurs making a significant impact on their communities and industries through innovative businesses or social enterprises.



The awards are a collaborative effort between PHINMA, Junior Chamber International (JCI) Manila, De La Salle University RVR College of Business, and the Asian Institute of Management RVR Center for Corporate Responsibility. Traditionally held on July 25 to commemorate Mr. del Rosario, Sr.'s birth anniversary, this year's ceremony was postponed due to PHINMA’s disaster relief efforts following Super Typhoon Carina.


Ramon V. del Rosario Nation Building Award 2024

Ambassador Howard Q. Dee, a philanthropist and advocate for social development and peace, was honored with the Nation Building Award. Mr. Dee's contributions include playing a pivotal role in peace negotiations with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and helping broker the 2001 Tripoli Agreement. He also co-founded ASA Philippines and the Assisi Development Foundation, both dedicated to eradicating poverty and promoting social justice.

His work has transformed countless lives both in the Philippines and abroad, making him a prime example of how patriotic duty and a commitment to peace can drive positive societal change. The RVR Nation-Building Award recognizes individuals who exemplify entrepreneurial spirit, national or global impact, corporate citizenship, and social responsibility. JCI Manila, whose founding president was Mr. del Rosario, Sr., celebrates 60 years of driving positive change through this award.


Ramon V. del Rosario Siklab Award 2024



Several individuals were recognized with the Siklab Award for their passion for entrepreneurship and social change:

Ariestelo A. Asilo, Co-founder and CEO of Varacco Inc. and ThinnkFarm, was honored for providing livelihoods to 400 coffee farmers in Cavite and Mindanao. His leadership helped Varacco earn recognition as one of the UN's 50 Best Small Businesses for promoting good food for all.


Victor Mari C. Baguilat, Jr., Founder and CEO of Kandama Social Enterprise, empowers Ifugao women weavers by bringing their traditional fabrics to the global stage. Kandama has been showcased at fashion events in New York, Paris, Melbourne, and Hong Kong, providing sustainable livelihoods while preserving indigenous weaving traditions.


Rafael Ignacio S. Dionisio, Co-founder and President of MAD Travel, partners with the Aeta community to restore forests in Zambales. Through MAD Travel, he has developed sustainable tourism experiences that support local entrepreneurs and farmers.


Ann Adeline G. Dumaliang, Co-founder of Masungi Georeserve, has combined conservation, eco-tourism, and education to protect over 500 species and plant 100,000 native trees in Masungi's conservation area. Her efforts have made a significant impact on environmental protection and watershed conservation.


Alvin C. Ong, Founder and CEO of Fredley Group of Companies, was recognized for building a billion-peso food and beverage empire while embracing inclusive hiring practices for differently-abled individuals.

PHINMA Chairman and CEO Ramon R. del Rosario, Jr. emphasized that the awardees’ stories exemplify the power of business to create positive change. Getting to Know Lyn Hazel Calawod, Carlos Yulo's Occupational Therapist

Who is Hazel Calawod?

On August 13, 2024, at around 10:30 am, Filipinos were startled by an issue revealed by social media personality Christian Albert Gaza, also known as Xian Gaza, about Carlos Yulo's therapist. You may check the issue here. We won't be discussing the issue itself, but instead, we will be highlighting Carlos Yulo's Sports Occupational Therapist, Lyn Hazel Calawod.





According to her Linkedin :

Hazel finished her secondary education as Salutatorian at Notre Dame-Sienna School of Marbel, a Catholic institution in Koronadal City. She pursued a B.S. in Occupational Therapy at the University of the Philippines - Diliman from 2005 to 2010. In 2014, she completed a course on Environmental Home Modifications at Occupational Therapy Australia. In 2019, she took the Ergonomics and Human Factors: Strategic Solutions for Workplace Safety and Health course at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.


Hazel Calawod is an Australian-licensed Occupational Therapist (OT) with over 9 years of professional experience. She is the Founder of NeuroBalance Therapy, where she leads a team of rehabilitation specialists providing holistic therapy services to individuals with pain and injuries, the elderly, children with disabilities, and both amateur and elite athletes focused on optimizing human performance.

In addition to her OT practice, Hazel is an Elite Sports Performance Coach, working with clients that include UFC fighters, Under Armour athletes, and world champions in Esports. Notably, she served as the Sports Mind Coach for Bren Esports' 2021 Valorant Team, guiding them to become Southeast Asian Champions and securing a spot at Valorant Masters Berlin.




Hazel is a strong advocate for integrating multiple research-based therapies to meet her clients' specific needs and goals. Her clinical expertise spans Neurorehabilitation, Occupational Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Elite Athletic Performance Optimization, and the Aging Brain.

In 2021, Hazel secured first place in BR41N.IO’s global competition for artificial/augmented intelligence in the neurorehabilitation data analysis category. She was also a finalist in the Australian Embassy in the Philippines' 2018 Australia Alumni Excellence Awards.

Hazel has furthered her education by taking a course on ergonomics and human factors at Harvard University's School of Public Health.

In her personal time, Hazel is passionate about sports and the arts—enjoying dancing, painting, and singing. She also loves writing, horseback riding, and exploring nature. Currently, she is enhancing her coding skills as a Google Developer. Additionally, Hazel is an active member of Australia Global Alumni.




Based on her Instagram posts, she has been with the Philippines' National Team for Men’s Artistic Gymnastics since 2021, supporting them during the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam.

In addition to being a therapist, she is also a commercial model. Some of her projects include Chippy, Sprite, Coca-Cola, Block & White, Nescafe, and Bon Chon.

Her age? I couldn't find information on her birthdate, but she appears to be in her early to mid 30s.

Forty-nine years later, she confronts the loss that has shaped her life, offering a powerful reflection on memory and survival.

Southeast Asian rituals and beliefs take center stage in the 2021 Thai documentary Worship by Uruphong Raksasad, which immerses viewers in the ritualized power of faith and its impact on people’s lives. Indonesia’s Natasha Tontey explores ancestral ceremonies through a speculative lens in her 2023 short film Of Other Tomorrows Never Known, blending mystical beliefs with themes of care and intergenerational dialogue.

The festival also explores themes of family and friendship. Singapore’s Dreaming and Dying, a 2023 experimental fantasy drama by Nelson Yeo, tells the story of three middle-aged friends reuniting after years apart, only to have long-repressed emotions and memories resurface. In Brunei’s 2022 short film Part of Me by Hazrul Aizan, the conflict between personal dreams and familial expectations is explored through the story of an aspiring singer torn between his passion for music and his family’s desire for him to pursue a stable career.

Closing Night: A Gripping Tale of Horror

Tingin concludes with the Philippines’ In My Mother’s Skin, a 2023 psychological horror film directed by Kenneth Dagatan. Set during the final days of World War II, the film follows a young girl who must protect her mother while being lured by a flesh-eating fairy. The fourth annual Tanduay Bacolod Rum Festival, set to take place from August 10 to 18, 2024, is gearing up to be a vibrant celebration under the theme "Ambagan," which highlights the diverse contributions individuals make to build a thriving community. This year’s event promises a rich array of food, arts, music, and thrilling activities for all attendees.

Originating as a tribute to Bacolod’s sugarcane industry—the primary source for Tanduay’s internationally acclaimed rums—the festival has been a staple since its inception in 2019. The city’s sugarcane heritage is intricately linked to Tanduay's success, making the festival a homage to this vital crop and the community it supports.




Lucio Tan III, President of LT Group and Tanduay Distillers, Inc., emphasized the festival's deep roots during a press conference held at Century Park Hotel in Pasay City, Metro Manila. “My father, Lucio K. Tan Jr., together with Councilor Em Ang, launched the Tanduay Bacolod Rum Festival to ensure that Bacolod, the City of Smiles, remains at the heart of Tanduay. This celebration not only honors our heritage but also ensures that future generations will appreciate and cherish it. The festival will feature various events encouraging community participation through culinary arts, visual arts, and more. The festivities will kick off on August 10 with a motorcade to the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC), where Mayor Albee Benitez and other local officials will inaugurate the Food Park. The Food Park, open nightly until August 18, will offer local and international culinary delights, mixology showcases, and live entertainment.

Key events include the Mixology Competition on August 12 at Ayala Malls Capitol Center and the Culinaria Competition on August 14-15. August 16 is designated as Rum Education Day, featuring a Tanduay Plant Tour, a Rum Masterclass, and the nationwide Grand Finals of the Mixology Competition at Seda Hotel.

The Power of Guava Leaves: Nature's Solution for Skin Care

Much has been said and written about the medicinal value of various plants in the Philippines. The archipelago, with its rich biodiversity, has a long history of using herbal medicine to treat various ailments. This tradition is deeply embedded in the Filipino culture and has been supported and promoted by the government to ensure the health benefits of these natural remedies are maximized.




In 1997, the Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act (TAMA) was signed into law by then-President Fidel V. Ramos. This legislation was a significant milestone in the promotion of traditional and alternative healthcare modalities in the Philippines. The act aimed to integrate these practices into the national healthcare system through scientific research and product development. Since the enactment of TAMA, the Department of Health (DOH) has endorsed ten medicinal plants due to their proven health benefits. These plants are lagundi (Vitex negundo), yerba buena (Mentha cordifolia Opiz), sambong (Blumea balsamifera), tsaang gubat (Carmona retusa), ampalaya (Momordica charantia), niyug-niyogan (Quisqualis indica), bayabas (Psidium guajava), akapulko (Cassia alata), ulasimang bato (Peperomia pellucida), and bawang (Allium sativum).

Among these, one of the more popular traditional medicines is the guava, known scientifically as Psidium guajava and locally as "bayabas." Guava has been used for generations and is well-regarded by arbolaryos (herbalists) and practitioners of natural medicine. The leaves of the guava tree are particularly valued for their medicinal properties. Traditionally, boiled, chopped, or pounded guava leaves have been used as an antiseptic for wound disinfection. The antiseptic properties of guava leaves help clean wounds, removing bacteria and germs, thus preventing complications and infections.

Furthermore, guava leaves can be used to address oral health issues such as tooth decay and gum infections. A mouthwash made from boiled guava leaves is effective in maintaining oral hygiene. For skin care, guava leaf extract is beneficial for treating various skin conditions. To accelerate healing and prevent infections, a decoction of guava leaves can be used as a soak, wash, or bath rinse for wounds, prickly heat, or fungal infections like athlete’s foot.

However, with the urbanization of many areas, finding guava trees and their leaves has become increasingly challenging. Fortunately, the market has responded to this need by developing commercial products that incorporate guava leaf extracts. These products offer the medicinal benefits of guava leaves in a convenient form. Typically available as sachets, they can be mixed with warm water to create a healing solution. Besides guava, these products often contain other natural extracts known for their skin care benefits. Ingredients such as eucalyptus (for its cooling effect), lavender (an antiseptic and aromatherapy agent), lemon grass (anti-microbial and fungicidal), mint (to soothe itchy skin), and rose root (an anti-oxidant to prevent premature wrinkles) are commonly included.

These products provide an effective and convenient solution for those seeking natural remedies without the hassle of sourcing raw materials.
