The annual International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) returns in 2024, and it’s poised to be bigger than ever. On September 21, this global movement to protect our oceans will unite volunteers in 15 different SM Supermalls across the Philippines, marking a significant step towards cleaner coastlines and healthier marine environments. Participating malls include SM By the Bay at the SM Mall of Asia Complex, SM Tuguegarao Downtown, SM City Tuguegarao, SM City Bataan, SM City Olongapo Central, SM City Olongapo Downtown, SM City Sorsogon, SM City Legazpi, SM Daet, SM City Puerto Princesa, SM City Roxas, SM City Cebu, SM City Seaside Cebu, SM City Mindpro, and SM City General Santos.
This year’s ICC holds special significance as SM Cares celebrates 20 years of creating positive environmental and social impacts. The organization is aiming high, setting a target to collect 200,000 kilograms of waste—double the 100,000 kilograms collected in 2023. Last year, with the help of approximately 17,000 volunteers, SM Cares recorded this impressive feat, demonstrating the power of community involvement. For 2024, SM Cares is eyeing an even larger volunteer count, targeting 20,000 individuals to take part in this critical initiative.
Why is the ICC important? The world’s oceans are facing unprecedented challenges due to pollution, much of which comes from land-based sources. Plastic waste, in particular, has become a pervasive problem, harming marine life and ecosystems. The ICC is a global movement that empowers communities to take direct action against marine pollution by removing trash from beaches, waterways, and oceans. Every piece of litter collected during this event represents a step closer to healthier seas and cleaner coastlines. It’s a collective effort where every volunteer counts.
SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm of SM Supermalls, is deeply committed to sustainability and community development. The organization’s environmental initiatives are just one aspect of its broader mission, which includes programs focused on various social groups such as women and breastfeeding mothers, persons with disabilities, senior citizens, and children and youth. SM Cares has also launched initiatives such as the Bike-Friendly SM program, further emphasizing its dedication to promoting greener, healthier lifestyles.
The 2024 ICC is a continuation of SM Cares' strong legacy of advocacy for environmental stewardship. By participating in this year’s event, you can contribute to a global effort that not only cleans our coastlines but also raises awareness about the critical need to protect our oceans from further harm. The cumulative effect of thousands of volunteers working together to remove trash and debris from coastal areas is monumental, showcasing the power of collective action.
Together, we can make a real, lasting impact on the environment. Whether you’re a seasoned environmental advocate or a first-time volunteer, the 2024 ICC offers an opportunity to be part of a global movement that’s working to create waves of positive change. Join SM Cares in this journey towards a cleaner, healthier world for future generations. Let’s make this year’s ICC the biggest and most impactful yet.
