A Humble Tailor, Crowned Champion at GameZone Tablegame Champions Cup: September Arena

From the sewing machine to the championship stage, Jomar Sapo-an, a humble tailor from Rizal, emerged as the grand champion of the GameZone Tablegame Champions Cup (GTCC): September Arena. Held at the FilInvest Tent in Muntinlupa from September 20 to 21, the two-day tournament brought together 36 of the country’s top tongits players, battling for prestige, honor, and the largest prize pool ever for a tongits competition in the Philippines—₱10 million.

Grateful and emotional after his victory, Sapo-an raised his hands to the skies and humbly shared, “Maraming maraming salamat sa lahat ng bumubuo ng GameZone. Kung hindi po dahil sa kanila, wala po ako rito. Nagpapasalamat din po ako kay God at sa pamilya ko.”

A Tailor’s Journey to Victory

Sapo-an, who hails originally from Bohol but now lives in Rizal with his wife and two children, never imagined that he would one day lift the coveted golden GTCC trophy. Encouraged by his wife—whom he fondly calls his number one fan—he decided to join the tournament despite it being his first time competing in a professional tongits event.

At first, the odds seemed stacked against him. Both Sapo-an and fellow finalist Erlinda entered the tournament as reserve players, simply motivated by their passion for the game. But destiny had different plans. In the finals, Erlinda dominated the first round, taking a 10,600-point lead. Yet, in a dramatic turn, Sapo-an displayed remarkable skill and composure, rallying back to edge out his opponent by just 500 points. With sheer determination and mastery of strategy, he sealed his place as the GTCC September Arena Grand Champion.

Sapo-an’s triumph earned him ₱5 million in prize money, alongside the golden trophy, presented by Rafael Jasper Vicencio, President of Gamemaster Integrated Inc.

More Than Just a Game

Despite the intensity of the competition, Sapo-an remained humble, attributing much of his success to luck and his simple background playing household card games and through the GameZone mobile app. He dedicated his win to his family, saying, “Inaalay ko po ang panalong ito sa pamilya ko, lalo na sa asawa ko na supportive at nag-push sa akin na sumali. Nag-pray lang po ako kay God na kung para sa akin, para sa akin.”

When asked about his plans for the prize money, Sapo-an shared his dream of providing a better life for his family: “Unang-una po, sa lupa’t bahay para sa pamilya. Bibilhin po namin ang lupa at bahay, pero di pa po namin napag-uusapan kung sa Maynila o sa Bohol.”

GameZone: Building Champions and Communities

Now on its third tongits tournament, GameZone continues to redefine competitive gaming in the Philippines. The GTCC: September Arena not only highlighted top-tier gameplay but also emphasized responsible gaming, community building, and public welfare.

Beyond the ₱10 million prize pool, GameZone also allocated ₱1 million for community development initiatives. During the event, the brand donated the amount to the Kalusugan Plus initiative, chosen through public voting, with the donation received by BingoPlus Foundation’s Executive Director, Angela Camins-Wineke.

GameZone also ensured that players and their companions were treated with the utmost care and hospitality. Each participant was allowed to bring one companion, both of whom enjoyed a five-day, all-expense-paid hotel stay complete with food and accommodations—a reflection of GameZone’s commitment to Filipino values of family and hospitality.

A Milestone for Filipino Gaming

The GTCC: September Arena was more than just a card game tournament—it was a celebration of passion, resilience, and purpose. With 36 players competing through grueling elimination rounds, the event showcased not just skill, but also camaraderie and sportsmanship.

For Sapo-an, the victory was life-changing. For GameZone, it was another milestone in cementing its reputation as a leader in the local gaming industry. By combining entertainment with social responsibility, GameZone is proving that gaming can be both fun and meaningful, inspiring champions not only at the table but also within their communities.

As the golden trophy was raised high, it was clear: the GTCC September Arena was not just about winning—it was about turning dreams into reality, and building a stronger, more hopeful future for Filipino players and their families.

Ballet Manila Restages Florante at Laura: A Timeless Filipino Epic Returns to Aliw Theater

The stage is set for one of the most anticipated cultural events of the year as Ballet Manila brings back Florante at Laura—a powerful reimagining of Francisco Balagtas’ timeless epic told through myth, music, and classical ballet. After its critically acclaimed world premiere and overwhelming audience reception, this celebrated masterpiece makes its return to Aliw Theater, Pasay City, with performances scheduled on October 3 at 8:00 PM, and October 4 and 5 at 5:00 PM.

Honoring Heritage Through Ballet

For Lisa Macuja-Elizalde, Ballet Manila’s founder and artistic director, this restaging is more than just a repeat performance. It is a cultural reckoning—a way to reconnect Filipinos with their heritage while showcasing the enduring power of Balagtas’ epic in a new artistic form.

“Bringing Florante at Laura back to the stage feels like coming full circle,” Lisa shared. “The first run was a dream realized; the second at Areté affirmed that Filipino stories, when told with care and conviction, truly resonate. Now, with this third staging, it feels less like a return and more like a reckoning. I’m proud, but more than that, I’m moved. This ballet continues to teach us how timeless our heritage can be.”

Her vision emphasizes that classical ballet, while often associated with Western traditions, can also be a vessel for Filipino storytelling—bridging cultures and reminding audiences of the richness of local literature and art.

A Musical Legacy Reawakened

One of the highlights of this production is the original score by National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab, once again performed live by the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth under the baton of Toma Cayabyab.

Ryan expressed his sentiments about the revival: “To be able to hear the score again, seeing it move—it’s like watching a memory evolve. I wrote this as a legacy piece, but its return reminds me that legacy isn’t static. Ballet Manila has given the music new breath, and I feel grateful. This re-staging proves that our classics still have something urgent to say.”

Choreography, Language, and Design

The ballet’s emotional and physical landscapes are shaped by the collaborative genius of choreographers Gerardo Francisco Jr. and Martin Lawrance, who blend passion, tension, and tenderness inspired by Balagtas’ verses. The libretto, adapted by Dr. Michael Coroza, ensures that the production stays rooted in the language and literary spirit of the original work.

On the visual front, set designer Mio Infante and costume designer Therese Arroyo return to define the show’s visual language. Drawing from Persian-inspired motifs infused with Filipino sensibilities, their designs create a breathtaking world that transports audiences back to the kingdom of Berbania—an imaginative backdrop that enriches the epic’s timeless themes of love, sacrifice, and destiny.

A Must-See Cultural Event

The restaging of Florante at Laura is not just a performance—it is an invitation to revisit a classic that remains deeply relevant today. Whether you are experiencing it for the first time or returning to feel its impact once more, this production promises to stir emotions and spark reflection on what it means to be Filipino.

This October, Ballet Manila invites everyone to return to the theater and immerse themselves in a rare celebration of national heritage through dance. For those who missed its earlier stagings, this is your chance to witness history come alive. For those who have seen it before, prepare to be moved again—live, urgent, and unmistakably Filipino.

SM Prime Launches Waste-Free Future Manual: A Step Toward Sustainable Living in the Philippines

SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime) is taking a bold step toward environmental sustainability with the launch of the SM Waste-Free Future Manual, a practical guide designed to make waste segregation simple, actionable, and empowering. Unveiled during the Sustainability Expo (SUSTEX 2025), the manual introduces the Recyclable, Disposable, Compostable (RDC) model, a system that encourages Filipinos to build better waste segregation habits for a cleaner, greener tomorrow.

Small Steps, Big Impact

The Philippines faces an urgent waste management challenge. The country generates up to 61,000 tons of waste every day and approximately 2.7 million tons of plastic waste annually—figures that continue to rise with urbanization and unsustainable disposal practices. Without immediate action, the problem will only grow.

Through the SM Green Movement, SM Prime is calling on individuals and communities to take part in solutions that make sustainability a part of everyday life. The Waste-Free Future Manual simplifies waste management into three clear categories:

Recyclable – items that can be repurposed or reprocessed.

Disposable – materials that must be properly discarded.

Compostable – organic waste that can be returned to the earth.

By emphasizing the word “able,” the campaign highlights that every person has the power, skill, and opportunity “to do” something about waste. With easy-to-follow guidelines, the manual empowers Filipinos to champion waste segregation at home, in workplaces, and in communities.
Innovation in Action

Beyond the basics of waste segregation, the manual also showcases reuse and recycling programs implemented across SM Prime’s business units. These programs extend the life of materials, reduce landfill waste, and demonstrate how sustainable practices can be applied at scale. When adopted widely, such initiatives create a ripple effect, inspiring more individuals, institutions, and businesses to embrace sustainable living.

In line with SM Prime’s sustainability efforts, only a limited number of physical manuals were printed. A digital copywill be made available for download to ensure accessibility while minimizing the campaign’s carbon footprint.
Championing Circular Solutions

Hans “Chico” Sy, President of SM Engineering Design and Development, emphasized the importance of openness to innovation. “We have to be open to new ways of doing things and of putting into action every little step that’s crucial for advancing waste management solutions,” he shared during the 2024 World Environment Day program.

The campaign has also gained strong support from institutions advocating for sustainable development. Dr. Selva Ramachandran, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), praised the RDC system as an important step toward a circular economy—a model that goes beyond managing waste to regenerating natural systems, keeping resources in circulation, and minimizing environmental impact.
A Collective Effort Toward a Waste-Free Future

SM Prime recognizes that achieving a waste-free future is not the responsibility of one organization alone. It requires collaboration across government, businesses, and communities.

“This project is not specific to one organization, but one that belongs to an entire society. We welcome everyone to practice this in their everyday lives,” Sy said.

Dr. Ramachandran echoed this sentiment, stressing that shared action is crucial: “A waste-free future requires collaboration, innovation, and circular solutions that support national priorities and the global Sustainable Development Agenda. By preventing waste, recovering valuable resources, and protecting our environment, we build a better future for generations to come.”
About the SM Green Movement

As one of Southeast Asia’s largest integrated property developers, SM Prime Holdings, Inc. is committed to building sustainable and inclusive spaces that empower communities. Through the SM Green Movement, the company promotes environmental responsibility by focusing on waste management, water stewardship, and energy efficiency.

The launch of the Waste-Free Future Manual is yet another milestone in SM Prime’s ongoing mission to inspire Filipinos to take small but meaningful steps that create lasting impact. Together, we can build a waste-free future where every action contributes to protecting the planet.

SM Supermalls and PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group Forge Strong Partnership to Promote Cybersecurity Awareness Nationwide

In a landmark move to strengthen public awareness on online safety, SM Supermalls and the Philippine National Police (PNP) Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) have officially signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) at the SM Supermalls Headquarters Boardroom in MOA Square, Pasay City. The collaboration emphasizes the growing need for cybersecurity awareness in the Philippines, especially as more Filipinos engage in digital transactions, social media, and online services daily.

Strengthening Cybersecurity Awareness for Every Filipino

The MOA signing was led by SM Supermalls executives and PNP officials, including Karen C. Zabaljauregui, Senior Assistant Vice President for SM Lifestyle, Inc.; Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Operations of SM Supermalls; PBGen. Matthew P. Baccay, PNP Acting Director for Investigation and Detention Management; and PBGen. Bernard R. Yang, Acting Director for PNP-ACG.

Through this partnership, SM Supermalls and SM Cinemas will provide free airtime for PNP-ACG’s educational campaigns. These videos will be played nationwide across SM Cinema screens and mall LED displays, reaching millions of mallgoers every day. The campaigns aim to educate Filipinos about the risks of cybercrime, promote responsible digital habits, and encourage active community participation in online safety initiatives.

Cybersecurity on the Big Screen

During the launch, the PNP-ACG unveiled its new cybersecurity awareness video, which will roll out nationwide in the coming weeks. By leveraging SM’s wide network of malls and cinemas, the campaign ensures that messages on cybercrime prevention reach diverse audiences—from students and families to professionals and business owners.

The PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group, tasked with preventing and investigating cybercrimes in the country, emphasized that online threats continue to evolve. From phishing and identity theft to online scams and hacking, cybercrimes pose risks to both individuals and businesses. Thus, public education is a crucial defense.
A United Stand Against Online Threats

“SM Supermalls is more than just a hub for shopping, leisure, and community gatherings. We are also a partner in ensuring the safety and well-being of millions of Filipinos who visit our malls and live their lives online,” said Engr. Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Operations of SM Supermalls.

He added that the partnership with the PNP-ACG is an extension of SM’s mission to create safe spaces not only in physical malls but also in the digital environment, where Filipinos increasingly spend their time.

Meanwhile, PBGen. Bernard R. Yang highlighted that fighting cybercrime requires both law enforcement expertiseand community cooperation. With partners like SM, public engagement is amplified, making nationwide awareness possible.
Beyond Shopping: SM as a Partner in Public Service

This initiative is part of SM Supermalls’ broader advocacy in supporting government services and protecting public welfare. For decades, SM has worked closely with government agencies to bring essential services closer to communities. Through its Government Service Express (GSE) hubs, SM malls host key government offices, offering services such as ID applications, permits, registrations, and renewals—making public service more accessible, convenient, and secure.

Now, with this partnership with the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group, SM reinforces its role as not just a retail leader but also a champion of digital safety and community empowerment.
Why Cybersecurity Matters Today

In today’s digital-first world, cybersecurity awareness is more critical than ever. As Filipinos embrace online banking, e-commerce, and social networking, they also face increasing exposure to scams, fraud, and identity theft. Partnerships like this one between SM Supermalls and PNP-ACG show how the private sector and government can work hand-in-handto safeguard citizens against digital threats.

SM Supermalls and CSC Celebrate 125 Years of Philippine Civil Service with Nationwide Job Fairs

In celebration of the 125th Philippine Civil Service Anniversary (PCSA), SM Supermalls, in partnership with the Civil Service Commission (CSC), rolled out a series of nationwide job fairs designed to connect Filipinos with meaningful careers in public service. The collaboration highlights the enduring legacy of the Philippine civil service and its critical role in nation-building.

For many attendees, the job fairs were more than recruitment events—they were opportunities to pursue purpose-driven careers that contribute directly to the welfare of the Filipino people.

"I am happy that they came up with a job fair for government agencies. Many still want to serve and work for our government," shared jobseeker Ken Gonzaga, who submitted applications for several positions during the event at SM City North EDSA.

Public Service Careers Within Reach

The Civil Service Anniversary Job Fairs opened doors to thousands of vacancies across national government agencies, local government units (LGUs), government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs), and state universities and colleges (SUCs).

By hosting these fairs inside malls, CSC and SM Supermalls made the process of exploring career opportunities in public service more accessible, inclusive, and convenient for Filipinos from all walks of life. Applicants were also given briefings on available positions, ensuring they understood the unique impact of careers in government service.

"Our partnership with SM Supermalls makes it easier for Filipinos to explore careers in public service—opportunities that go beyond personal growth and contribute to the progress of our communities and the nation. The venue is well-organized, convenient, and accessible for jobseekers," said Mary Grace Dugay, Director III of the Civil Service Commission.
More Than Jobs: Building a Nation of Servants

While job placement was a primary goal, the initiative underscored a bigger message: public service is a calling. The job fairs highlighted the essential role of civil servants in driving social progress, inspiring a new generation of Filipinos to dedicate their skills and talents to building stronger communities.

"SM is honored to celebrate 125 years of Philippine Civil Service by opening our malls as venues where Filipinos can discover not just jobs, but meaningful careers in public service," said SM Supermalls President Steven Tan. "By working hand-in-hand with CSC and our government partners, we continue to support an empowered citizenry and sustainable nation-building."

For fresh graduates like Joanne Moriel, the event was an eye-opener. "Especially with what’s happening now in the country, I want to be part of the public sector to be able to help make a difference," she shared.
Job Fair Schedule Across the Philippines

As part of the PCSA’s milestone celebration, the Civil Service Anniversary Job Fairs were simultaneously mounted across multiple SM malls, including:

September 3 – SM City Tuguegarao

September 3–4 – SM CDO Downtown Premier and SM City Butuan

September 4 – SM City North EDSA

September 4–5 – SM City Iloilo

September 5 – SM City Legazpi

September 9 – SM City Baguio (final leg)

These events reaffirmed the commitment of SM Supermalls and CSC to empower Filipinos with stable, purpose-driven, and sustainable career opportunities.

SM Prime Reinforces the SM Green Movement: Simple Acts, Shared Impact for a Greener Tomorrow

As the world continues to face pressing environmental challenges, sustainability has become more than a buzzword—it is now a collective responsibility. SM Prime Holdings, Inc., one of Southeast Asia’s largest integrated property developers, is taking bold steps toward a greener tomorrow through the SM Green Movement, a company-wide sustainability initiative that empowers individuals and communities to take part in creating a more climate-resilient future.

Born during the height of the pandemic, the SM Green Movement started with small, personal stories: employees practicing mindful consumption at home, choosing to conserve water, reduce energy use, and recycle waste. These seemingly simple actions created ripples that grew into a full-scale movement, uniting SM Prime’s properties, stakeholders, and customers under one shared vision—to nurture the planet while supporting sustainable communities.

Turning Sustainability Goals Into Everyday Actions

The SM Green Movement focuses on three key pillars: waste management, water stewardship, and energy efficiency.By breaking down ambitious sustainability goals into achievable daily practices, the movement shows Filipinos that sustainability is not an abstract idea, but something that can be done every day.

Through these initiatives, SM Prime also advances its mission to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. From building eco-friendly infrastructures to encouraging mallgoers to practice waste segregation, the campaign emphasizes that everyone has a role to play in building greener and more livable cities.

"The SM Green Movement is our way of showing care—care for our planet and care for the people who live in it," said Joaquin San Agustin, Executive Vice President for Marketing of SM Supermalls. "We’re not just building malls, homes, or offices—we’re building opportunities for everyone to be part of the solution. And the best part is, it starts with what we do every day."
Collaboration That Creates Lasting Change

At the core of the movement is collaboration. Real, long-term impact thrives when communities, businesses, and organizations work together. SM Prime partners with local government units, schools, NGOs, and individuals to develop solutions that not only address environmental concerns but also integrate into people’s daily lives.

"Our strength as a company comes from our ability to mobilize people around a common cause," San Agustin explained. "The SM Green Movement is about collective impact. Every bottle recycled, every drop of water saved, every watt conserved—all of it adds up."
Green Innovations Across SM Properties

Across the Philippines, the SM Green Movement is already making visible impact:

Solar Power at SM City Fairview: With a 3.785-Megawatt peak solar photovoltaic (PV) system made up of 6,882 solar modules across 4.3 hectares, this project currently holds the record as the largest rooftop solar PV installation on a commercial building in the country.

Water Recycling at SM City Baguio: A dedicated water treatment facility ensures that water is reused, conserving vital resources while fostering resilience against climate-related challenges.

Recycled Water at the Mall of Asia Complex: Water trucks carrying 100% recycled water are used to maintain greenery across the property, demonstrating innovative solutions for responsible water use.

Waste Management Through SM Cares: With color-coded bins for recyclables, compostables, and disposables, mallgoers are encouraged to “Bin It Right” and actively participate in waste segregation.
A Movement for Generations to Come

More than a corporate program, the SM Green Movement is a growing platform for advocacy and action. With every story shared and every sustainable practice embraced, SM Prime is proving that positive environmental change is within reach for every Filipino.

Through simple acts with lasting impact, SM Prime is building a greener tomorrow—one community, one household, and one choice at a time.
