2025 Manulife Financial Resilience and Longevity Report Reveals Quality of Life and Financial Independence Are Top Priorities for Asia’s Aging Population

As people across Asia continue to enjoy longer life spans, a growing number are shifting their focus from simply extending life to ensuring that those additional years are lived with purpose, independence, and stability. This insight comes from the newly released 2025 Financial Resilience and Longevity Report for Asia (the “Report”) by Manulife Wealth & Asset Management (Manulife WAM). The Report highlights that while longevity continues to rise across the region, financial resilience and confidence remain uneven, especially as expectations for healthier, more independent retirements grow.

Covering key markets such as Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, the Report builds on Manulife’s long-standing commitment to helping communities prepare for longer lifespans. This commitment is further demonstrated through the recent launch of Manulife’s Longevity Institute, a global platform designed to promote innovation, insights, and solutions that empower people to live longer, healthier, and more financially secure lives.

According to Calvin Chiu, Head of Asia Retirement at Manulife and Chief Executive Officer at Manulife Investment Management Hong Kong, people are beginning to redefine what retirement truly means.
“Longevity is reshaping how people across Asia think about retirement. We’re seeing people rethink what retirement means—not simply living longer, but living better. Financial independence, health, and well-being now define success in this new era of longevity.”
Living Better, Not Just Longer

One of the clearest themes from the Report is that quality of life outweighs the desire for longevity alone. Fewer than 10% of respondents said they wanted to live longer regardless of circumstances. Instead:

50% prefer a meaningful, purpose-driven life,

Over one-third want to avoid becoming a burden, and

Many envision later life as a stage where they remain financially independent, physically active, mentally engaged, and able to maintain their preferred standard of living.

The findings also show a strong perceived link between financial and physical well-being. Three out of four respondentsbelieve that their financial state directly affects their physical and mental health, while 85% say it heavily influences their mental well-being during retirement.

Chiu emphasizes this mindset shift:
“People across Asia want to enjoy their extended lifespans with dignity, purpose, and freedom. That requires a shift in mindset—from saving for retirement to planning for longevity.”
Asia’s Financial Readiness Gap

Despite the growing awareness and desire for quality aging, many still feel unprepared for retirement. Less than half of respondents believe they will have sufficient funds to retire comfortably. The confidence gap varies:

Hong Kong: 48%

Malaysia: 58%

Philippines: 52%

Indonesia: 77%

Mid-life individuals aged 45 to 54 emerged as the least confident, signaling the need for earlier and more intentional financial planning.

The Report also found that cash remains the dominant investment choice, comprising about half of non-property portfolios. Fear of capital loss, limited investment knowledge, and market uncertainties contribute to this cautious approach. Meanwhile, property—traditionally a cornerstone of Asian retirement planning—is gradually losing its primacy, with only 3 in 10 still viewing it as a top priority.

Chiu notes that this overreliance on cash and property can create long-term vulnerabilities:
“Holding too much cash and relying solely on property can leave people exposed to inflation and income gaps. Financial resilience requires diversification, especially into income-generating and inflation-protected assets.”
The Power of Financial Advice

A clear trend from the Report is that professional guidance significantly strengthens financial confidence. Those who work with financial planners reported notably higher optimism:

Indonesia: 89% with a planner vs. 63% without

Hong Kong: 62% with a planner vs. 29% without

Insurance agents and financial planners remain the most trusted advisors across the region.

“Professional advice can make all the difference,” Chiu said. “With the right guidance, people can move from simply saving to actively investing, gaining greater control over their future income and lifestyle.”
Generational and Market Insights Across Asia

Regional nuances help illustrate where progress is being made:

Hong Kong: 65% plan to shift their cash holdings into higher-return investments.

Malaysia: Strong interest in pension solutions offering steady income and inflation protection.

Indonesia: Most financially confident market; 69% are more open to income-generating investments over property.

Philippines: A market in transition, with 73% now prioritizing income-generating investments—a shift toward more balanced and diversified retirement planning.

Across generations, a common theme stands out: the desire for a work-free new chapter. This is strongest among younger adults (55% of ages 25–34) and older adults (58% of ages 60+).
A Call to Action: Building Confidence for Longer Lives

As life expectancy is projected to rise further, Manulife WAM highlights the need for a more holistic approach to retirement—one that aligns physical, mental, and financial well-being. The Report encourages individuals, employers, and industry leaders to rethink traditional retirement assumptions and take proactive steps toward longevity planning.

“Longevity should be a source of optimism, not anxiety,” Chiu concludes. “With the right financial habits and guidance, people can turn longer lives into better lives—and that’s the vision driving our work at Manulife.”

Building Dreams, Shaping Futures: Palawan Group of Companies Welcomes 158 New Scholars

The Palawan Group of Companies proudly welcomed 158 new scholars into its expanding family of young achievers, reaffirming its steadfast commitment to transforming lives through education. As one of the company’s core pillars under its corporate social responsibility program, the Palawan Group of Companies Scholarship Program (PGC-SP) continues to serve as its flagship initiative—one that has shaped generations of students and strengthened communities across the nation. This year’s 28th batch of scholars was officially received during the Confirmation and Orientation Day held at the company’s head office in Puerto Princesa City, marking a significant milestone in their educational journeys.

Through the PGC-SP, scholars receive financial assistance that covers their academic needs, easing the financial burdens often associated with pursuing higher education. Beyond monetary support, the program offers access to essential learning facilities, including a dedicated study room and printing services located at the Palawan Group head office. These resources ensure that scholars can study more effectively and feel supported throughout their academic life.

More than its material benefits, what truly sets the PGC-SP apart is its commitment to holistic development. The program integrates values formation, leadership training, and personal development activities into the scholars’ journey. The goal is to nurture not only excellent students, but compassionate, values-driven, and purpose-oriented individuals who embody the principles upheld by the Palawan Group of Companies. The organization believes that academic excellence must go hand in hand with character building—an approach that has produced hundreds of graduates who now serve as role models in their families and communities.

During the event, Founder and Chairman Bobby L. Castro spoke from the heart as he recalled how scholarships played a crucial role in shaping the future of his own family. “Kami ng aking asawa at ang aming limang anak ay mga scholars din noon… Nagsimula kami noon sa sampu, hanggang nadadagdagan taon-taon,” he shared. He emphasized that the scholarship program did not arise from corporate necessity but from a personal desire to give back. What began with ten scholars in 1998 has now grown into hundreds—proof of the Palawan Group’s enduring belief in education as a transformative force.

Chief Human Resources Officer Korina Castro-Fernando also addressed the scholars with a message filled with warmth and encouragement. She reminded them that they represent the “faces of hope” for their families and communities. Her heartfelt advice—mag-aral nang may pagsisikap at laging piliing maging mabuting tao—highlighted the Palawan Group’s advocacy for excellence, integrity, and kindness.

Deputy Chairman and Co-founder Angelita M. Castro further underscored the importance of integrity and love for the country. She encouraged scholars to stay informed about national issues and to carry the values of honesty and public service throughout their future careers. Her reminder that success must be pursued “sa malinis na paraan” resonated deeply with the young scholars, many of whom aspire to uplift their families and serve the nation.

Representing the 28th batch, Lovie Ubay, a BA Communication student from Palawan State University, expressed the collective gratitude and determination of her fellow scholars. She pledged that the batch would honor the trust given to them and strive to pay forward the kindness shown by the Palawan Group of Companies. Her message captured the spirit of the program: an opportunity not only to succeed, but to uplift others in return.

To date, the PGC-SP has produced nearly 800 graduates—among them licensed teachers, certified public accountants, and successful entrepreneurs. Many have also chosen to return to the Palawan Group as dedicated employees, contributing to its mission of providing reliable financial services to Filipinos nationwide, from bustling cities to the most remote communities.

With the addition of the 158 new scholars, the Palawan Group of Companies continues to invest in the promise of the Filipino youth. Through education, character formation, and unwavering support, the organization remains committed to building dreams and shaping a brighter future—one scholar, one family, and one community at a time.

TCL Elevates Home Laundry Care With the Advanced Super Drum C682

TCL, the Philippines’ No. 1 Panel TV brand and a global leader in television and air-conditioning solutions, continues to expand its innovation footprint with the introduction of the TCL Super Drum C682. Designed to deliver powerful cleaning performance with the gentlest fabric care, this next-generation washing machine brings together advanced engineering, smart connectivity, and user-centered convenience. It represents TCL’s commitment to making home care simpler, faster, and more efficient for modern Filipino households.

Guided by the brand’s philosophy of smart clean and supreme care, the TCL Super Drum C682 redefines what a premium washing machine should be. Its harmonious blend of a larger drum capacity, intelligent washing systems, energy-saving technologies, and fabric-friendly features sets a new benchmark in today’s home appliance landscape.

“As a brand, our mission is to bring real innovation that improves everyday living,” says Eric Li, Senior Product Manager of Washing Machine and Refrigerator, TCL Philippines. “The TCL Super Drum C682 is a testament to that mission. By infusing genuine intelligence into laundry technology, we are not only elevating performance but also ensuring the most economical use of water and energy available today.”

Below are the five standout features that make the TCL Super Drum C682 a true game-changer in laundry technology.

1. Ultra-Large 540mm Super Drum

At the heart of the C682 is its remarkable 540mm drum—the largest in its class. This generous size offers multiple advantages: clothes tumble more freely, friction is minimized, and tangling is reduced. The result is superior fabric protection, especially for delicate garments or bulky laundry like comforters and blankets.

The large drum also enhances washing performance by allowing water and detergent to circulate more efficiently. This means dirt is lifted more effectively, leading to a deeper and more hygienic clean. For big families, the increased load capacity minimizes the number of wash cycles needed, making laundry day significantly quicker and more convenient.

2. DD Inverter Motor (Direct Drive) for Power and Durability

The C682’s Direct Drive Inverter Motor eliminates the traditional belt-and-pulley setup found in most washers. With fewer mechanical components, its performance is not just stronger—it’s more reliable and longer-lasting.

This motor technology delivers powerful yet ultra-quiet operation, making the C682 ideal for households where laundry areas are located near living or sleeping spaces. The precise motor control adjusts energy usage based on the load and wash program, optimizing efficiency and lowering electricity costs.

3. Smart Control With Auto Dosing for Effortless Laundry

The TCL Super Drum C682 introduces true intelligence to the laundry routine. Its Auto Dosing System uses built-in sensors to calculate the exact amount of detergent and softener needed for each load. This eliminates guesswork, prevents overuse of cleaning agents, and avoids residue on clothing—ensuring consistent, high-quality results.

With TCL’s smart ecosystem, users can also operate the washing machine remotely via the TCL Home app. Start or pause cycles, monitor progress, receive notifications, and even download specialized wash programs—all from the convenience of your smartphone.

4. Steam Wash + ActiveFresh for Deep Hygiene and Odor Control

In today’s health-conscious environment, hygiene is a top priority. The C682’s Steam Wash feature uses high-temperature vapor to deeply penetrate fabrics, effectively eliminating bacteria, allergens, and dust mites without relying on harsh chemicals.

Steam also helps relax fibers, reducing wrinkles and making clothes easier to iron—or in many cases, ready to wear straight from the machine.

Meanwhile, the ActiveFresh function prevents unpleasant odors and moisture buildup inside the drum, keeping clothes smelling fresh even if users forget to unload immediately.

5. Ocean Wave Drum Pattern for Gentle Yet Effective Cleaning

The C682 features an upgraded Ocean-Wave drum pattern engineered specifically for large-diameter washers. This innovative design enhances water flow and improves washing power while maintaining maximum gentleness on fabrics. It strikes an ideal balance between deep cleaning and fabric preservation—a crucial combination for daily household laundry needs.

TCL Super Drum C682 comes in two elegant color options: White (available exclusively at SM Appliance stores) and Gray (available at all authorized TCL dealers nationwide).

Shangri-La Plaza Unveils Its Dazzling Christmas Tree in a Spectacular Holiday Ceremony

Shangri-La Plaza ushered in the Christmas season with grandeur and heartfelt festivity as it held its much-awaited annual Grand Tree Lighting Ceremony on November 15 at 6:00 PM in the Grand Atrium. Far from being a simple flip of a switch, this year’s celebration unfolded as an immersive holiday showcase titled A Symphony of Sparkle, a moving musical narrative that illuminated the cherished traditions of a Filipino Christmas—Songs & Splendor, Gatherings, Giving, and child-like Wonder. Guests were invited not only to witness the lighting of the iconic tree but to experience a story brought to life through performance, artistry, and emotion.

Guided by the creative vision of musical director Farley Asuncion and musical arranger Rory Fortich, the spectacle blended live music, dance, narration, and multimedia elements with finesse. Each act highlighted familiar scenes and customs deeply rooted in the Filipino holiday spirit: the warmth of family gatherings, the comforting ritual of Simbang Gabi, and the joy of caroling that fills neighborhoods with harmony. A live band and orchestra provided the rich musical backdrop, setting the tone for an evening of nostalgia and wonder. The performance lineup featured esteemed groups and artists, including the world-renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers, the talented musicians of the Manila String Machine, powerhouse vocalists Johann Enriquez and Sheena Lee Palad, and dynamic performances by the Speed Dancers and Ballet Manila, all contributing to the night’s tapestry of sound and movement.

Adding to the sense of celebration, Gucci elevated the day’s festivities with an exclusive event that offered guests a first look at its Cruise 2026 Collection. The fashion showcase was complemented by a curated cocktail experience crafted by Juniper by Josh Boutwood, a restaurant recognized in the Michelin Guide, further enhancing the evening’s atmosphere of refinement and indulgence.

This year, Shangri-La Plaza’s holiday décor enhances the mall’s signature elegance with a theme that marries crystal brilliance and timeless ornaments. Intricately designed elements appear to float midair, culminating in a magnificent suspended Christmas tree installation that commands attention at the center of the mall. A palette of vivid gold and lush green enriches the environment, inviting visitors into a space where nostalgia meets luxury. With its glowing lights, shimmering surfaces, and thoughtfully arranged displays, the décor transforms the mall into a warm, multi-sensory haven of holiday enchantment.

The Christmas celebration continues to build momentum beyond the Grand Tree Lighting, with a series of events and activities throughout the season. Beginning November 15, shoppers can participate in the Wishes & Wheels: Holiday Raffle Promo, where every single receipt worth PHP 2,500 or more earns a chance to win one of two Hybrid Lexus LBX vehicles—an exciting opportunity that captures the spirit of giving and delight.

December at Shang becomes even more festive with Christmas Ensembles: Weekend Showcases of Motion and Melody, a lineup of performances designed to inspire joy and community spirit. Audiences can enjoy the OB Montessori Greenhills on December 12, the Ateneo Boys Choir on December 13, Studio Dance by Lina on December 14, St. Theresa’s College Quezon City on December 20, and the Mandaluyong Children’s Choir on December 21—each offering its own unique expression of holiday cheer.

Families and friends can also gather for a Christmas Day movie tradition as the Metro Manila Film Festival begins screening at the Red Carpet Cinema on December 25. The celebrations continue with Shangri-La Plaza’s Boxing Day Sale on December 26, giving shoppers another chance to snag fantastic deals after the holiday rush.

Finally, Shangri-La Plaza closes the year with brilliance through the Encore of Lights fireworks display on December 30 at 8 PM at the Streetscape, providing a sparkling sendoff to 2025 and a luminous welcome to the New Year.

Manulife Investments Philippines Debuts Semiconductor Fund Targeting the Future of AI Technology

Manulife Investment Management and Trust Corporation (Manulife Investments Philippines) has introduced the Manulife Global Semiconductor Opportunities Equity Feeder Fund, a new sector-focused unit investment trust fund (UITF) that opens the door for Filipino investors to participate in the rapid global expansion of the semiconductor industry. As semiconductors become increasingly indispensable to advances in artificial intelligence (AI), digital connectivity, and next-generation technologies, the Fund enables investors to benefit from one of the fastest-growing and most transformative sectors shaping today’s global economy.

The Manulife Global Semiconductor Opportunities Equity Feeder Fund is designed to maximize total returns by investing primarily in a collective investment scheme (CIS), referred to as the Target Fund. The Target Fund seeks long-term capital appreciation by allocating at least 70% of its net assets to equity and equity-related securities of leading semiconductor companies around the world. Through this structure, Filipino investors gain exposure to companies that play critical roles in the global semiconductor value chain—from chip designers and equipment manufacturers to firms developing enabling technologies that power AI, cloud computing, 5G networks, electric vehicles, and advanced automation.

“Semiconductors lie at the heart of modern innovation,” shared Aira Gaspar, President and Chief Executive Officer of Manulife Investments Philippines. “They are the essential building blocks that make artificial intelligence, automation, digital infrastructure, and countless smart technologies possible. With demand for advanced chips accelerating across industries, the launch of the Manulife Global Semiconductor Opportunities Equity Feeder Fund empowers Filipino investors to access the companies driving groundbreaking progress in this field. This new UITF demonstrates our commitment to providing forward-looking investment solutions that help Filipinos build wealth, pursue their long-term financial goals, and stay ahead in an increasingly digital world.”

Manulife Investments notes that the semiconductor industry is poised for remarkable expansion in the coming years as technology becomes even more deeply integrated into everyday life. Industry projections estimate that the global semiconductor market will exceed US$1 trillion by 2030, underscoring its immense long-term growth potential. While large, established players continue to dominate the sector, there are also promising opportunities among under-researched and emerging semiconductor companies offering differentiated technologies, unique intellectual property, or strong competitive moats. By employing an active management strategy, the Target Fund seeks to identify these opportunities, navigate shifting market cycles, and invest in semiconductor leaders and innovators best positioned for sustainable, long-term value creation.

The launch of the Manulife Global Semiconductor Opportunities Equity Feeder Fund further expands Manulife Investments Philippines’ diverse suite of UITFs designed to meet various investor objectives and risk profiles. Tailored for investors who seek potential long-term capital appreciation, the Fund offers a convenient and accessible entry point into a high-growth global sector. With a minimum investment of only US$100 or PHP1,000, it provides Filipinos an affordable avenue to participate in the future of semiconductor and AI-driven technologies.

Investors can easily open a UITF account online through Manulife iFUNDS, the company’s secure digital investment platform that enables users to monitor and manage their UITF holdings anytime and anywhere. Meet Andrea Brillantes: Tanduay’s Official 2026 Calendar Girl for Its ‘Iconic Era’

Tanduay, the world’s number one rum, officially introduced Andrea Brillantes as its 2026 Tanduay Calendar Girl in a dazzling media launch at The Elements at Eton Centris—a celebration that marked not just the unveiling of a new face, but also the affirmation of a renewed spirit of confidence, authenticity, and empowerment. The event gathered media, industry partners, and fans for a night that honored both legacy and reinvention.

For many decades, the Tanduay Calendar Girl has held a special place in Filipino pop culture. More than a yearly visual showcase, the calendar has become a symbol of the evolving image of the modern Filipina—glamorous yet grounded, bold yet thoughtful, artistic yet authentic. Each edition mirrors the zeitgeist of its era, putting the spotlight on women who embody strength, resilience, and multifaceted identity.

The 2026 edition, aptly themed “Iconic Era,” continues this celebrated tradition while also pushing it forward. Instead of relying solely on allure or glamour, this year’s calendar emphasizes individuality, self-acceptance, and personal truth—qualities that Tanduay believes define true icons. It is a theme that Andrea Brillantes naturally carries with her, making her the ideal muse for this new chapter.

“When I found out, I was honestly shocked. Like, ha? Talaga ba?” Andrea shared with a laugh as she took the stage, radiating a mix of excitement and humility. “Growing up, I’d always see the Tanduay Calendar Girls as these strong, confident, iconic women, so to actually be one now feels surreal. It’s such an honor and definitely a huge milestone for me.”

The Making of an Icon

Andrea admitted that preparing for the role went far deeper than the physical.

“It really took a lot of preparation, both mentally and physically,” she explained. “I had to be disciplined with my meal plans and make sure I felt good inside and out. I also studied each concept with the team because I wanted every photo to show a different side of me.”

The 2026 calendar features themes and visuals that tell a unified story of growth, power, and evolution. From soft and introspective portraits to striking high-fashion layouts, each image captures a chapter in Andrea’s journey—portraying her not just as a public figure, but as a woman learning, maturing, and embracing every layer of herself.

“Being a Tanduay Calendar Girl is about being real and confident,” she said. “You have to embrace who you are—your flaws, strengths, everything. Whether I’m soft, strong, playful, or fierce… that’s all me, and I’m proud of that.”

A New Era of Self-Discovery

Now stepping into a more mature phase of her career, Andrea spoke candidly about how people have witnessed her growth through the years.

“People have watched me grow up, and now they’re seeing me as a woman,” she said. “I’m more sure of myself, more intentional with the things I do, and more confident to take control of my career. Hindi na siya about proving anything. It’s about enjoying where I am and celebrating how far I’ve come.”

Her partnership with Tanduay reflects the brand’s own evolution—from a heritage Filipino distillery to an internationally awarded label that continues to innovate while remaining rooted in its identity.

“I’ve made mistakes, learned from them, and now I know myself better,” Andrea added. “Mas marunong na akong pumili—whether it’s people, projects, or where I put my energy. I’ve learned to protect my peace, trust my gut, and stand by my choices. I feel stronger and more grounded now.”

For her, entering her “Iconic Era” means standing firmly in authenticity.

“Maybe people feel that energy because I try to stay true to myself,” she said. “I grow, I learn, I change, but I stay grounded in who I am.”
Honoring Strength and Individuality

For Tanduay, this new era is a continuation of its long-standing mission: honoring beauty not just as appearance, but as attitude, strength, and individuality—values the brand has carried for more than 170 years.

As the evening concluded with the unveiling of the calendar’s stunning visuals, one message resonated clearly: both Tanduay and Andrea Brillantes are embracing growth, transformation, and authenticity, confidently stepping into an iconic future.

Ahtisa Manalo at 74th Miss Universe : How Her National Costume Moved Me as a Filipino

Today marks the much-anticipated National Costume Competition and Preliminary Round of the 74th Miss Universe, held in the vibrant and lively country of Thailand. As always, the Philippines—known for being one of the strongest contenders in global pageantry—waited with breathless excitement to witness what our pride, Maria Ahtisa Manalo, had prepared for this iconic segment. The show began promptly at 2 PM, hosted by the radiant R’Bonney Nola, Miss Universe 2023 and a woman with Filipino heritage—making the moment feel even more special.

One by one, the candidates showcased their national costumes, all equally beautiful and confidently prepared. But when it was finally time for our very own Pambansang Manika, Ahtisa Manalo, the energy shifted. It felt as though every Filipino watching—whether in Thailand or back home—held their breath in unison.

And then Ahtisa stepped onto the stage.

She emerged in a breathtaking creation by Mak Tumang, the same genius behind Catriona Gray’s iconic 2018 Lava Gown. The moment I saw her, a wave of pride washed over me—familiar, deep, and unmistakably Filipino.

Her national costume, titled “Cherished Tradition,” felt like a love letter to our culture. Ahtisa embodied the Festival Queen: a living symbol of beauty, grace, and joyful celebration—an image that instantly resonated with the spirit of every Filipino fiesta.

The foundation of her ensemble paid homage to the timeless traje de mestiza: the bell-shaped camisa sleeves, the elegant saya, and the modest pañuelo gently draped across her shoulders. It was a modern tribute to María Clara, the iconic heroine of José Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere—the epitome of the dalagang Filipina: refined, dignified, virtuous. Seeing Ahtisa in that silhouette felt like watching our history and identity come alive.

Crafted from hand-embroidered piña, the costume honored one of the Philippines’ most exquisite and historically rich textiles. Every delicate pineapple fiber, every stitch, seemed to whisper the devotion of generations of Filipino artisans. The natural glow of the fabric reflected what I’ve always believed the Filipina spirit to be—resilient, luminous, and deeply rooted in heritage.

Then came the skirt—an explosion of culture, joy, and meaning. It wasn’t merely a garment; it was a moving festival, celebrating:

• The Giant Lantern Festival of Pampanga, lighting up the world’s longest Christmas season with hope and unity
• The Pahiyas Festival of Lucban, a cascade of vibrant colors honoring gratitude and abundant harvest
• The Panagbenga Festival of Baguio, bringing the fragrance and beauty of our beloved blooms to life

As each color shimmered under the stage lights, I felt as if she was carrying the entire Filipino spirit with her—our fiestas, our creativity, our warmth, our faith, our identity.

Watching her walk, I didn’t just see a national costume.
I saw home.

Ahtisa’s every step felt like a celebration of who we are as a people. She moved with the brilliance of a thousand lanterns, the generosity of Filipino hospitality, and the graceful silhouette of María Clara. In that moment, she wasn’t just representing the Philippines—she became the Philippines.

And as a Filipino watching from afar, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride, connection, and gratitude. Her performance reminded me that no matter where Miss Universe is held, no matter how global the stage, our culture will always shine vividly, unapologetically, and beautifully.

Ahtisa didn’t just wear a national costume…
She carried our history, our artistry, and our heart.

And she made me proud to be Filipino, she made me proud to be Quezonian.

As the image of Ahtisa fades from the screen of my laptop, the pride and joy swelling in my chest slowly turn into something heavier—something that aches. Seeing her embody the beauty, grace, and soul of the Philippines reminds me of how breathtaking our country truly is. The Pearl of the Orient Seas deserves to shine, to flourish, to be cherished. Yet the reality that greets me the moment the screen goes dark is the bitter truth that our nation—so rich in culture, talent, and hope—is being dragged down by a monstrous government that continues to ruin it piece by piece. It hurts, deeply, to witness such beauty on the Miss Universe stage while knowing that back home, the very essence of what makes us proud is being tainted by greed, incompetence, and corruption. The contrast is infuriating. A country as beautiful as ours should not be suffering this way.

At the heart of RELX’s mission is a powerful purpose: “to benefit society by developing products that help researchers advance scientific knowledge; doctors and nurses improve the lives of patients; lawyers promote the rule of law; and consumers make informed decisions.” This commitment to using data and analytics for societal good defines the company’s global identity—and places its Philippine teams at the center of meaningful, human-impacting work.
Tech for Good: Global Solutions Built in the Philippines

RELX’s Philippine technology hub contributes to solutions that tackle some of the world's most complex challenges. Far from traditional back-office tasks, Filipino teams work directly on systems and platforms that fuel scientific discoveries, enhance patient care, optimize legal processes, and empower organizations to make critical data-driven decisions.

These projects span a wide range of advanced technologies—from AI-powered research tools for healthcare and environmental studies, to machine-learning models that streamline legal workflows, to digital products that promote accuracy, transparency, and better outcomes for professionals worldwide.

Regardless of platform or product, one thing is consistent: the work done in the Philippines has immediate, global impact.

Guided by RELX’s purpose of enabling professionals and businesses “to make better decisions, get better results, and be more productive,” Filipino engineers, data scientists, product experts, and analysts demonstrate how technology built locally can transform systems internationally.
A People-First, Inclusive Culture that Sets the Standard

RELX | Reed Elsevier’s growth is grounded in its award-winning workplace culture—recognized as one of Asia’s Top 3 Inspiring Workplaces in 2025. This achievement reflects a long-standing commitment to creating spaces where employees feel valued, supported, and empowered to thrive.

One of the company’s strongest pillars is its learning and development ecosystem. Through One RELX | Reed Elsevier University (ORU), employees gain access to structured learning pathways across five specialized divisions. Training programs cover foundational leadership skills, emerging technologies, AI and machine learning, data analytics, and business competencies. This holistic approach ensures talent can continuously grow alongside the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Through its Employee Resource Groups—including Women’s Circle, Pride Circle, Enabled (Persons with Disabilities), Mosaic (Multiculturalism), and Soul Circle (Religious Tolerance)—RELX fosters a community where individuals from all backgrounds feel seen, heard, and supported. These groups play an active role in shaping perspectives that contribute to stronger, more thoughtful technology solutions.

As the company’s Global EVP affirmed: “Every day across RELX, our employees are inspired to undertake initiatives that make unique contributions to society and the communities in which we operate.”
Leadership Rooted in Service, Not Hierarchy

RELX | Reed Elsevier’s leadership philosophy is anchored in servant leadership—a culture that prioritizes humility, mentorship, and genuine care for employees. Managers act as enablers rather than gatekeepers, ensuring people have the guidance, encouragement, and psychological safety needed to grow.

Elaiza, a data analyst who advanced into business analysis and project management roles, captures this sentiment perfectly:

“I’ve had supportive managers and mentors who encouraged me to pursue certifications, pitch improvements, and present solutions that impact multiple teams. It made me realize how much growth is possible when you step outside your comfort zone with the right support to guide you.”

Her story reflects a broader reality at RELX: leadership empowers, rather than dictates.
Building the Future of Tech—With Purpose at the Core

As RELX | Reed Elsevier continues to expand its Philippine operations, it remains committed to nurturing local talent across software engineering, data science, AI/ML engineering, product development, cybersecurity, and digital innovation.

The company’s approach to talent attraction is clear: show how technology roles can go beyond coding and systems to create solutions that genuinely improve lives and strengthen industries.

RELX’s global purpose puts it simply: “Our purpose guides our actions beyond the products that we develop. It defines us as a company.”

In an era where technology shapes the world, RELX | Reed Elsevier demonstrates that the most meaningful innovations come from workplaces where tech is not just smart—but human.

AstraZeneca and Diabetes Philippines Launch Early Screening Campaign for Diabetes

In observance of World Diabetes Day, Diabetes Philippines and AstraZeneca formally launched the “STOP Diabetes: ACT NOW” movement—an urgent nationwide call for early diabetes screening and timely intervention. The initiative seeks to address the alarming rise of diabetes in the country, a lifestyle disease affecting an estimated 4.7 million Filipino adults and now the fifth leading cause of death nationwide. With this campaign, experts hope to significantly reduce the risk of life-threatening complications through early detection and holistic care.

With the theme “Driving Better Diabetes Outcomes Through Early Screening and Holistic Care,” the event gathered healthcare professionals, patient advocates, and partner organizations to discuss the growing burden of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and its common severe complication, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Speakers emphasized that diabetes remains one of the most pressing public health concerns in the Philippines—one that requires collective action.

“As we celebrate World Diabetes Day, we in the medical community, as well as our patient partners, sound the bell to ACT NOW,” said Dr. Francis Pasaporte, past president of Diabetes Philippines, as he opened the forum.
Understanding the Weight of Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes is a chronic metabolic condition wherein the body becomes resistant to insulin or fails to produce enough of it. Insulin plays a vital role in allowing glucose to be used for energy; without it functioning properly, glucose stays in the bloodstream and causes persistently high blood sugar. Over time, unmanaged diabetes can lead to severe complications—one of the most critical being Chronic Kidney Disease, which affects nearly 40% of patients with T2Dduring their lifetime.

The latest International Diabetes Federation (IDF) report revealed that 7.5% of Filipinos aged 20–79 are living with diabetes. Even more concerning, 53.5% of these adults remain undiagnosed, suggesting that more than half of those with diabetes do not know they have the disease. This gap underscores the urgent need for accessible, early screening to help prevent irreversible damage.

The Philippine Statistics Authority’s recent data further highlights the disease’s impact, placing diabetes as the fifth leading cause of mortality in 2024.
STOP Diabetes, ACT NOW: A Unified Push for Action

During the World Diabetes Day Agham Kapihan, Dr. Fatma Tiu, President of Diabetes Philippines, emphasized the expanding burden of diabetes across Filipino families and the shared responsibility to curb its rise.

“Diabetes is a big problem that is affecting our nation,” added Dr. Rey Rosales, Treasurer of Diabetes Philippines. “Early screening is one of the most powerful tools we have to save lives and prevent severe complications such as CKD.”

Dr. Rosales also noted that 7 out of 10 working-class Filipinos are affected by diabetes or its consequences, highlighting the disease’s impact on productivity and economic stability.

To address this, the STOP Diabetes: ACT NOW campaign aims to encourage widespread screening, prompt treatment, and increased community involvement. Dr. Tiu stressed widening screening efforts, starting with families of diabetic patients, and rolling out more clinics nationwide through PhilHealth-supported programs.
Voices from Patient Advocates

Patient advocates also shared firsthand insights into how early action can save lives.
Architect Cynthia Clemen Y. Duntz, President of the Diabetes Advocacy Society Inc., highlighted the importance of mindful eating and science-based guidance within communities.

Meanwhile, Reynaldo Abacan Jr., President of Dialysis PH, urged Filipinos—especially those without symptoms—to undergo screening. “Even if we don’t feel anything now, we may already have the disease. Early screening gives us the chance to change our lifestyle and get treatment.”
PhilHealth and AstraZeneca Strengthen Support

A representative from PhilHealth assured that members can access financial support through programs such as the Yaman ng Kalusugan Program (YAKAP) and the Guaranteed and Accessible Medications for Outpatient Treatment (GAMOT) package.

“Under the Yaman ng Kalusugan Para sa Lahat program, we cover primary consultations, essential diagnostic tests like HbA1c, and essential anti-diabetic medicines,” said Dr. Lydia Labro of PhilHealth. “We are focusing not just on curative care but also on prevention and early detection.”

From the industry side, Dr. Cyril Tolosa, Medical Affairs Director of AstraZeneca Philippines, reaffirmed the company’s ambition to eliminate deaths from cardiometabolic diseases. He emphasized AstraZeneca’s continuing partnerships with patient groups, LGUs, diabetes educators, and pharmacies to strengthen diabetes and kidney disease screening across the country.
A Call for Collective Commitment

To close the event, Dr. Nines Bautista, Vice President of Diabetes Philippines, encouraged everyone to renew their shared responsibility in combating diabetes.

“Diabetes is not just a medical condition; it is a public health and social concern affecting families and communities,” she said. “Through awareness, education, and united action, we can empower every Filipino to live healthier, longer, and more fulfilling lives.”

The forum concluded with a commitment exercise, symbolizing a renewed pledge among partners and advocates to help Filipinos take charge of their health—and to stop diabetes before it stops them.

European Organic Agriculture Standards Promoted at the 10th Philippine Sustainability Movement

Naturland e.V., one of the world’s foremost international associations for organic agriculture, together with the support of the European Union (EU), underscored the expanding importance of European organic standards and the critical role of organic adoption in building resilient food systems during the 10th Philippine Sustainability Movement. The event served as a timely reminder that sustainability is no longer an abstract ideal—it is a shared responsibility that requires concrete action from farmers, businesses, consumers, and policymakers alike.

“Every time we choose organic, we’re choosing a system that respects people, animals, and the planet,” said Alexandra Castillo, Philippines Coordinator for Promotions and Market Linkages at Naturland e.V. “Organic practices help protect the soil and water that sustain us and make sure that everyone can enjoy safe, healthy food now and in the future. Together with our partners, we work hand-in-hand with stakeholders across the value chain to turn these standards into everyday practice and support the shift toward more sustainable food systems.”

Castillo’s message reflects the growing global awareness that organic agriculture is not only a farming method but also a movement grounded in long-term environmental stewardship. Organic farming protects soil health, promotes animal welfare, and encourages biodiversity—three pillars essential to a sustainable and resilient future. Europe, in particular, upholds some of the strictest and most comprehensive standards for organic certification in the world. Through dedicated regulations, continuous monitoring, and rigorous inspections, the EU ensures that every stage of production—from the planting of seeds to distribution on store shelves—meets these high benchmarks.

Because of these stringent standards, organic practices provide practical and reliable pathways to support sustainability across the entire food value chain. Farmers benefit from methods that improve soil fertility and reduce reliance on synthetic inputs, while suppliers and manufacturers are able to guarantee authenticity and traceability. Restaurants, hotels, and retailers offering certified organic products gain the trust of consumers who increasingly seek transparency about where their food comes from and how it is produced. Labels such as the EU Organic Logo and the Naturland seal are more than certifications—they are symbols of credibility that signal responsible sourcing and ethical land management. These marks resonate strongly with today’s consumers, who value healthier choices and wish to contribute to positive environmental impact through their everyday purchases.

Naturland also highlighted ongoing initiatives that aim to expand the reach of organic products in the Philippines. One major effort is the campaign “European Organic: Nurturing Every Juan,” implemented by Naturland with support from the EU. The campaign’s goal is to make European-certified organic products more visible, accessible, and relatable to Filipino consumers by showing how organic can be seamlessly integrated into daily life. Through education, awareness drives, and partnerships with local retailers and food businesses, the program encourages consumers to make informed choices that benefit both personal well-being and the environment.

The association also co-organized the 10th Philippine Sustainability Movement alongside Pristine Solutions, a consultancy dedicated to advancing sustainability in the country. The annual event brings together sustainability organizations along with representatives from the hospitality, culinary, development, business, and public sectors. This year’s edition also saw participation from Naturland partners, including PYC Foods and One World Deli, demonstrating the growing network of local stakeholders committed to the organic mission.

Over the last decade, the Philippine Sustainability Movement has significantly contributed to raising awareness and driving the adoption of more responsible and ethical practices in the country’s hospitality and food industries. As it marks ten years of progress, the movement looks ahead with a renewed commitment to strengthening food systems anchored in transparency, accountability, and shared values. With organizations like Naturland and the EU working hand-in-hand with local partners, the vision of a more sustainable Philippine food landscape is no longer distant—it is steadily becoming reality.
