Mariinsky Ballet Superstars Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim Return to Manila for La Bayadère

Two of the world’s most celebrated ballet artists are stepping onto the Philippine stage once again to give local audiences a breathtaking display of international talent, technical mastery, and fiery artistic passion. This August, Ballet Manila proudly brings back world-renowned principal dancers Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim of the prestigious Mariinsky Ballet. Together, they will breathe dramatic new life into the timeless nineteenth-century classic, La Bayadère, live at the Aliw Theater.

This sensational engagement solidifies Ballet Manila’s long-standing mission to bring world-class classical dance directly to Filipino theatergoers, providing a rare opportunity to witness internationally acclaimed prima ballerinas and male principals perform locally.

A Triumphant Return to the Philippine Stage

The upcoming staging follows last year’s sold-out production of Don Quixote, which also featured the formidable duo and drew glowing praise from classical dance enthusiasts across the country.

“We are very excited to welcome Renata and Kimin back to Ballet Manila,” said Lisa Macuja Elizalde, founder and artistic director of Ballet Manila. “Their performances in Don Quixote were truly unforgettable, and the response from Filipino audiences was overwhelming. It was a delight to see our theatergoers embrace them so warmly, and I know many have been eagerly anticipating their return.”

Their dynamic stage partnership is backed by immense chemistry and international prestige. Back in 2016, Shakirova and Kim captured global attention by winning Russia-Kultura TV’s acclaimed Grand Ballet competition, establishing their natural synergy as a lead couple.

Meet the Mariinsky Principal Dancers

Both guest artists bring extraordinary credentials to this landmark production:

Renata Shakirova

Recognized as a prodigy early in her training, the Tashkent-born prima ballerina has rapidly climbed the ranks of the Mariinsky Ballet. Celebrated worldwide for her exquisite musicality, dramatic expressiveness, and commanding stage presence, Shakirova reached a career milestone as a recipient of the 2025 Benois de la Danse award—frequently referred to in the dance community as the "Ballet Oscar."

Kimin Kim

Making history as the first foreign male principal dancer in the legendary history of the Mariinsky Ballet, Kimin Kim started his formal ballet training relatively late, around age ten. Despite the late start, his gravity-defying athleticism, razor-sharp precision, and soaring jumps have made him one of the most sought-after male dancers performing today.

The Tragic Romance of La Bayadère

Choreographed originally by Marius Petipa, La Bayadère remains one of classical ballet’s most grandiose and emotionally charged masterpieces. Set against the vibrant backdrop of ancient India, the story follows a heartbreaking melodramatic love triangle that spans both the mortal world and the afterlife.

The narrative centers on Nikiya, a devoted temple dancer (bayadère), and Solor, a noble warrior sworn to love her. Their romance is imperiled when the powerful High Brahmin—secretly enamored with Nikiya—discovers their bond. Intent on eliminating his rival, the High Brahmin informs the Rajah of Solor's secret affair. However, the plot takes a tragic turn when the Rajah decrees that Nikiya, rather than Solor, must die to secure Solor’s arranged marriage to his daughter, Princess Gamzatti.

At Russia's Mariinsky Theatre, Kim regularly portrays Solor, while Shakirova has showcased her immense versatility by mastering both the compassionate role of Nikiya and the imperious role of Gamzatti.

“Renata and Kim’s extensive experience with La Bayadère promises Filipino audiences a deeply moving and authentic interpretation of Marius Petipa’s enduring masterpiece,” added Macuja Elizalde. “We hope that by the end of the run, every audience member leaves with a renewed passion for classical ballet.”

How 7-Eleven Philippines Hit a Record Php 99.4 Billion in Sales: Leadership, Expansion, and Digital Shifts

The Philippine retail landscape is shifting fast, but one dominant player continues to set the gold standard for convenience store chains in the country. Philippine Seven Corporation (PSC), the exclusive licensor of 7-Eleven in the Philippines, officially closed its 2025 fiscal year with record-breaking system-wide sales and an aggressive nationwide footprint expansion.

At its recent Annual Stockholders' Meeting, PSC outlined a banner year defined by robust financial growth, major leadership transitions, and a massive push toward digital, cashless transactions. Here is a deep dive into how the country's leading convenience store franchise is positioning itself for a sustainable, tech-driven future.

7-Eleven Philippines 2025 Financial Performance By the Numbers

Despite navigating a complex and demanding consumer environment, PSC delivered stellar financial metrics in 2025, driven by higher foot traffic, larger customer basket sizes, and strategic new store openings.

  • Record System-Wide Sales: Hit Php 99.4 billion, a 6.4% growth compared to Php 93.5 billion in 2024.

  • Revenue Surge: Total revenues rose by 7.2%, reaching Php 95.1 billion (up from Php 88.7 billion).

  • Net Income: Stood resilient at Php 3.6 billion.

  • Return on Equity (ROE): Improved by 41 basis points to a record 35.61%.

PSC also fortified its balance sheet. The company increased its total assets by 10.5% to Php 47.8 billion, while stockholders' equity grew by 23% to Php 11.2 billion. With a properly managed debt-to-equity ratio of 3.28x, PSC retains the financial flexibility required to aggressively fund its future retail investments.

"We delivered another solid year in a demanding environment," stated Richard Lee, President of Philippine Seven Corporation. "Our priority was continuity, keeping the momentum going while strengthening the business for what comes next. We stayed disciplined in how we grow and kept investing in the capabilities that serve our customers and shareholders over the long term."

A New Era of Leadership: Transition and Continuity

The year 2025 marked a historic leadership transition for Philippine Seven Corporation, ensuring long-term operational continuity while injecting fresh strategic focus.

In July 2025, Mr. Richard Lee assumed the role of President of PSC, bringing a deep, disciplined understanding of day-to-day operations. Concurrently, long-time leader Mr. Jose Victor Paterno transitioned into his new role as Chairman of the Board.

Highlighting the company’s strategic trajectory, Board Chairman Jose Victor Paterno noted that the past year represented a pivotal transition period.

"I am confident in the leadership now guiding the Company day to day," Paterno said. "Richard brings a deep understanding of our operations and a disciplined approach to growth. As the Board, our focus remains on sustaining that momentum and creating lasting value for our shareholders and the communities we serve."

Dominating the Philippine Retail Sector via Rapid Franchise Expansion

7-Eleven successfully brought everyday convenience closer to more Filipino communities by adding 423 new stores in 2025. This rapid expansion brought their total nationwide network to 4,491 stores, up from 4,130 the previous year.

The 7-Eleven Philippines Store Network Structure

The balance between corporate strength and entrepreneurial growth remains a core pillar of the PSC business model:

  • Company-Owned Stores: 53.42%

  • Franchised Stores: 46.58%

Beyond expanding their footprint in high-growth provincial markets, PSC focused heavily on enhancing store formats, upgrading the customer experience, and leaning into high-margin segments. The network saw exceptionally strong performance from fresh food selections and 7-Eleven’s proprietary foodservice brands, proving that convenience retail in the Philippines is shifting toward quick-service food options.

Investing in the Future: The Cashless Payment Boom

To future-proof its retail ecosystem, PSC directed heavy capital investments into store modernization, supply chain enhancements, and digital transformation.

The standout milestone of this digital push is the rapid rollout of cashless payment acceptance across the country.

  • End of 2025: Cashless payments were successfully implemented in over 1,000 stores.

  • May 2026 Milestone: Capitalizing on massive momentum, the capability scaled exponentially to cover over 4,000 stores.

Today, 7-Eleven customers across the Philippines can seamlessly pay using credit cards, debit cards, QR Ph, e-wallets, and various digital payment methods. This reduces checkout friction, increases transaction speeds, and aligns 7-Eleven with the evolving digital habits of Filipino consumers.

The Outlook for 7-Eleven Philippines

With a reinforced balance sheet, modernized digital features, and clear alignment between executive leadership and the Board, Philippine Seven Corporation is entering its next phase of growth with high operational confidence.

"Our focus now is on execution, opening the right stores, deepening how we serve customers, and scaling the digital and payment capabilities we built this year," concluded President Richard Lee. "That is how we keep 7-Eleven the most convenient choice for Filipinos wherever they are."

For retail investors and franchise partners alike, PSC’s 2025 results prove that even as the biggest player in the game, the company still has plenty of room to scale.

Redefining Corporate Solutions and Alternative Distribution

Under Hora’s leadership, Manulife has consistently focused on customer-centricity. Bringing Go into the executive committee ensures that the voices of corporate clients and alternative channel partners are directly represented in the company’s top-tier decision-making processes.

Securing the Financial Future of Filipinos

For Go, this new chapter is about more than just business growth—it is about financial inclusion and societal impact.

"I’m honored to take on this role at an exciting time for Manulife Philippines," said Erwin Go. "We see strong opportunities to deepen partnerships, expand our corporate solutions portfolio, and deliver more relevant, customer-focused offerings that help Filipinos live longer, healthier, and more financially secure lives. Toxic Flowers & Floral Allergies: How Your Favorite Blooms Can Risk Your Health

Whether you are gifted a single stem or a dozen, flowers possess an innate ability to lift your spirits. We instinctively smile at their vibrant colors, inhale their intoxicating fragrances, and decode their hidden meanings of friendship or romance. A well-placed bouquet can instantly transform a plain room and brighten an otherwise dull day.

Yet, beneath their delicate petals and sweet aromas, these beautiful creations of nature harbor a darker side. Under the right circumstances, certain common flora can trigger severe illness, intense allergic reactions, or even prove fatal.

Hidden Dangers: Toxins and Plant Fungi

"Certain flowers contain toxic substances, which they use as a natural defense mechanism to protect themselves against insects, herbivores, and environmental stress," explains Fatima Johanna T. Santos-Ocampo, MD, a Pediatric Allergology & Immunology Specialist at Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed).

While some plants merely cause mild discomfort, others are lethal. Homeowners and plant enthusiasts must learn to identify the varying threat levels of popular flora:

  • Highly Poisonous: Varieties like Angel’s trumpet and azalea are incredibly toxic. If ingested by humans or pets, they can cause severe systemic poisoning, organ failure, or death.

  • Mildly Toxic: Holiday favorites like poinsettia and springtime daffodils are notorious for causing distressing gastrointestinal issues, including vomiting and severe nausea, if consumed.

  • Contact Irritants: Plants like poison ivy produce oils that trigger intensely itchy, blistering rashes upon skin contact.

Beyond internal toxins, plants are highly susceptible to diseases that can indirectly threaten human health. For instance, a white, dusty coating on leaves and stems indicates powdery mildew, a fungal disease that suffocates the plant. Similarly, black spot targets roses, while gray mold blankets its host in a thick, fuzzy layer to drain its nutrients.

"In general, humans are not highly susceptible to direct infection from a plant pathogen," notes Dr. Santos-Ocampo. "However, it is vital to avoid diseased plants entirely, particularly if you are immunocompromised."

A prime example is sporotrichosis, a fungus often found on the thorns of dead roses. If this fungus enters the bloodstream through a simple thorn scratch, it can spread throughout the body, eventually affecting the lungs, eyes, central nervous system, bones, and joints. Furthermore, certain molds produce mycotoxins. These toxic compounds generate aflatoxins, which can lead to acute poisoning characterized by vomiting, convulsions, long-term risks like cancer, and even death.

The Pollen Problem: Understanding Seasonal Allergies

For millions of people, the primary threat from flowers is pollen—the fine, powdery substance indispensable for plant reproduction but highly disruptive to human immune systems.

When vulnerable individuals inhale airborne pollen, their bodies mistake the harmless particles for dangerous invaders, such as a virus or bacteria.

[Inhaled Pollen]

       ▼
[Histamine Release]
       │
       ▼
[Symptoms: Itching, Sniffling, Sneezing, Wheezing]

This immune overreaction triggers the release of histamine, a chemical that causes blood vessels to expand and skin to swell, leading to standard allergy symptoms like itchy eyes, sniffling, and sneezing. For individuals with asthma, the stakes are much higher, resulting in severe wheezing and sudden shortness of breath.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you should exercise extreme caution around these common, high-pollen flowers:

  • Baby's breath

  • Dahlias and Daisies

  • Chamomile

  • Chrysanthemums

  • Sunflowers

Smart Gardening and Safe Gifting

Fortunately, you do not have to banish flowers from your life completely. Preventing a dangerous reaction begins with smart selection and proactive plant maintenance.

If you maintain an indoor or outdoor garden, inspect your plants regularly. "If you notice leaves with telltale signs of a pathogen, pluck them out immediately so the disease does not spread," advises Dr. Santos-Ocampo. "Ensure there is ample space between your potted plants to promote excellent air circulation, and protect your garden using commercially available garden oils and organic fungicide sprays."

When buying floral arrangements for your home or gifting them to loved ones, prioritize pollen-free or heavy-pollen varieties. Flowers with heavy, sticky pollen are safer because the grains are trapped within the structure of the bloom and do not easily become airborne.

Safer, Low-Pollen Floral Options
Classic Elegant BloomsRoses, Orchids, Tulips, Carnations
Lush and Showy OptionsHydrangeas, Peonies, Irises
Bright and Vibrant SelectionsBegonias, Snapdragons, Cactus flowers

Additionally, opt for fresh, tightly budded flowers rather than older blooms that are fully open and actively shedding pollen. It is also wise to avoid flowers with overpowering fragrances. Highly aromatic flowers release a high concentration of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). In enclosed spaces, these concentrated chemical compounds can irritate the respiratory tract, triggering coughing fits, allergic rhinitis, or acute asthma attacks in sensitive individuals. Choosing mildly scented alternatives is always the safer route.

When to Seek Medical Attention

If you happen to experience a mild allergic flare-up, over-the-counter medications can provide rapid relief. Antihistamines effectively block the chemical trigger of your symptoms, while decongestants clear up nasal passageways, and medicated eye drops soothe redness and irritation.

However, self-medication has its limits. "You should consult a healthcare specialist immediately if your symptoms do not subside with basic medication, or if they begin to progress into severe respiratory distress," warns Dr. Santos-Ocampo. By understanding the biology of your bouquets and making informed choices, you can safely enjoy the beauty of flowers without compromising your health.

Scaling Across ASEAN: Strategic Asia Marketing Alliance (SAMA) Launches Philippine Chapter to Empower Local Brands

For years, regional expansion across Southeast Asia was a privilege reserved almost exclusively for massive multi-million dollar conglomerates. Homegrown Filipino brands, small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs), and mid-sized businesses frequently found themselves locked out of neighboring markets. The barriers to entry were simply too high: either take on the exorbitant overhead fees of global network agencies or blindly navigate complex foreign markets alone.

That narrative is officially changing. The Strategic Asia Marketing Alliance (SAMA), a dynamic network of independent marketing agencies spanning Southeast Asia, has officially launched its Philippine chapter. Operating under the evocative local theme "Sama-Sama, Halo-Halo", SAMA Philippines provides a powerful, cost-effective, and highly collaborative ecosystem for local businesses aiming to scale across the ASEAN region.

Bridging the Gap for Philippine MSMEs

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) form the absolute backbone of the Philippine economy. They account for the vast majority of registered businesses nationwide, generate millions of jobs for local communities, and contribute roughly 40% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Yet, despite their massive economic footprint, a significant portion of these businesses remain strictly domestic. The financial risk of international expansion, coupled with a lack of localized market insight, has historically kept excellent Filipino products and services from crossing borders.

SAMA Philippines addresses this long-standing systemic gap directly. By acting as a single, trusted gateway, SAMA connects ambitious Filipino brands with a thoroughly vetted network of premier independent agencies in crucial Asia-Pacific hubs, including:

  • Indonesia

  • Thailand

  • Vietnam

  • Malaysia

  • Singapore

The "Sama-Sama, Halo-Halo" Cross-Border Marketing Model

Traditional global advertising networks often rely on rigid, standardized regional playbooks that fail to capture cultural nuances. SAMA turns this outdated structure on its head.

The alliance's organizing logic is perfectly encapsulated by the classic Filipino dessert, halo-halo. Just as a great halo-halo brings together independent, distinct ingredients that retain their unique flavors within a single glass, SAMA’s member agencies remain completely independent. Each partner agency possesses hyper-localized knowledge, deep consumer behavioral insights, and strong media relationships in its home country.

Through SAMA, a brand can maintain its core strategic consistency while trusting local specialists to adapt the creative execution to the cultural realities of each target market.

“SAMA changes the way Filipino businesses can approach regional growth,” says Enya Reyes, Country President of SAMA Philippines. “Instead of assembling separate partners market by market or paying for a regional network they may not fully use, brands can now work with one Philippine team that connects them to proven local specialists across Southeast Asia. This makes expansion more deliberate, more efficient, and more achievable for companies that are ready to scale.”

Strengthening the Philippine Economy Through ASEAN Success

During the launch event, digital transformation pioneer and keynote speaker Donald Lim emphasized the broader macroeconomic impact of empowering local businesses to go international.

“The next generation of Philippine growth will come from more Filipino companies successfully expanding beyond our borders," Lim noted. "Our entrepreneurs already have the talent, innovation, and products. What they often lack is trusted market access and reliable local partners."

Lim highlighted that by eliminating unnecessary intermediaries and lowering structural friction, the alliance makes cross-border business inherently less risky. "When more Filipino companies succeed across ASEAN, we strengthen not only individual businesses but the competitiveness of the Philippine economy as a whole.”

Powerhouse Alliances: The Founding Member Agencies

Driving the SAMA Philippines framework is a robust coalition of founding local agencies. Each brings a highly specialized, distinct marketing discipline to the table, ensuring that expanding brands receive comprehensive, 360-degree support:

Founding AgencyCore Specialization & Expertise
BBX CollabHigh-impact creative marketing and brand strategy
BlogapaloozaPremier influencer marketing and creator partnerships
CuriosityDeep-dive design research and consumer insight consultancy
Evident Integrated Marketing and PRPurpose-driven marketing and strategic communications
Inventie Marketing ServicesCutting-edge digital marketing and performance media
LiveCatch PHHigh-quality broadcasting and media production solutions
M2.0 CommunicationsData-driven public relations and corporate communications
RedAnts Media Inc.Multimedia production and large-scale event management

By combining forces, these independent specialists simulate the exact execution model that SAMA utilizes on a regional scale: specialized, agile talent working in perfect coordination to achieve a singular brand goal.

A Leveled Playing Field for Filipino Entrepreneurs

By systematically dismantling the financial and logistical barriers to entry, SAMA Philippines is effectively leveling the playing field. International market penetration is no longer a luxury exclusive to massive corporations. With the right local strategy and a dedicated regional network, mid-sized Filipino brands can confidently introduce their innovations to over 600 million ASEAN consumers.

Filipino businesses ready to take their first step toward regional growth can connect with the alliance and explore collaborative opportunities by visiting samaalliance.com.
