Lola Igna: More Than a Beautiful Movie, It’s a Story of Life and Legacy

When was the last time you watched a movie top-billed by our senior actors?

Truth be told, in our country, as artists grow old in the industry, their chances of getting projects decrease. Only those who remain famous and relevant are given the opportunity to showcase their craft.

Good thing Direk Eduardo Roy Jr. came up with a film that features a grandmother as the lead character.

Coinciding with the celebration of 100 years of Philippine cinema, Found Films and EMBA Production proudly bring Lola Igna — one of three arthouse films under the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino Sandaan Showcase. While much of cinema’s history is shaped by stories within stories, Lola Igna connects with Filipino moviegoers through powerful life lessons. The film stars Angie Ferro, Yves Flores, Meryll Soriano, and Maria Ysabel Lopez.

Lola Igna began filming in August 2018. It explores the story from the point of view of a granddaughter and a great-grandson — a heartfelt look at family, emotions, and acceptance as one nears the end of life.

A serene scene from Lola Igna

Living in a secluded hut in the middle of the rice fields, Lola Igna is a 118-year-old woman who just wants to die in peace. But her neighbors are determined to win the world record for the oldest living grandmother — making her an instant celebrity. Amid all the sudden changes in Lola Igna’s life, she meets Tim, her great-great-grandchild, an aspiring vlogger eager to connect with his now-famous ancestor.

What unresolved issues do they share? What regrets and grievances linger between generations? As they rediscover each other, both learn how to live, forgive, and love to the fullest.

Lola Igna is written and directed by Eduardo Roy Jr., known for acclaimed films like Bahay Bata (2011), Quick Change (2013), Pamilya Ordinaryo (2016), and Fuccbois (2019). He also directed the romantic comedy Last Fool Show (2019) for Star Cinema.

Angie Ferro delivers a powerful performance as Lola Igna

Leading the pack of multi-talented actors is the iconic Angelica “Angie” Caballero Ferro, who started in 1969 as a theater actor in PETA. Her impressive career includes nearly a hundred film and TV credits, including notable performances in Atsay and Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara. Ms. Ferro is one of the few artists who can seamlessly transition between theater, television, and film.

Lola Igna serves as a celebration of Filipino storytelling — a reminder that film can honor both heritage and humanity. As Philippine cinema celebrates its centennial year, this movie stands as a symbol of artistry, respect, and hope for future generations.
