SM City Baguio's Rainwater Treatment Facility: A Blueprint for Water Sustainability

SM City Baguio is making remarkable strides in water stewardship with the launch of its innovative Rainwater Treatment Facility (RTF) in July 2023. In just a few months, the facility has already processed over 17,111.80 cubic meters of rainwater—equivalent to seven Olympic-size swimming pools or enough to fill more than 6,800 standard water tankers—into potable water for mall operations and tenant use. 

This groundbreaking initiative not only supplements the mall’s water supply from the Baguio Water District but also significantly contributes to the city’s water security and the well-being of its residents. 

Located in the basement level of SM City Baguio, the RTF provides 30% of the mall’s total monthly clean water requirements, offering a reliable source for both consumption and food preparation. The facility is part of SM Prime’s larger commitment to sustainability and resilience, showcasing how businesses can implement forward-thinking solutions that address pressing environmental challenges while supporting local communities. 

Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong commended SM City Baguio’s efforts, emphasizing the facility's role in addressing the city's critical need for safe and reliable water sources. "There is a critical need for reliable and safe water sources," Mayor Magalong stated. "SM City Baguio's rainwater treatment facility is a commendable initiative that directly addresses this need. We hope that other private establishments can adopt similar projects for the efficient use of our water resources." 

The rainwater treatment facility uses a rigorous six-step process, ensuring that harvested rainwater is thoroughly cleaned and made potable. Advanced equipment and real-time monitoring systems keep the facility operating at peak efficiency, while regular testing by an accredited facility ensures the water meets all safety and quality standards. The system’s capacity to provide clean water has proven to be a valuable asset, reducing pressure on the city’s already strained water supply and enabling more water to be distributed to households, especially during periods of scarcity. 

Engr. Liza Silerio, Vice President and Sustainability and Resilience Head for SM Supermalls, noted the broader implications of this initiative. “This facility is a testament to SM Prime Holdings’ commitment to sustainable operations and to the well-being of the communities we serve,” Silerio said. “By maximizing rainwater harvesting and treatment, we are not only reducing our reliance on the city's water supply but also contributing to a healthier and more resilient Baguio City." 

The positive impact of the rainwater treatment facility extends beyond the mall, benefiting the wider community. By reducing reliance on municipal water, the facility has allowed local water haulers to supply more households, helping to ease the city’s water challenges, especially during times of scarcity.
