Beyond Money: InLife Retirement Index Reveals What Filipinos Need to Prepare for a Secure Retirement

When it comes to retirement planning in the Philippines, most Filipinos still see it as a purely financial goal — but new research from Insular Life (InLife) shows that retirement readiness goes far beyond money.

According to the first-ever InLife Retirement Index, Filipinos scored only 47 out of 100 in overall retirement preparedness. The result exposes a nationwide need for stronger awareness and planning, not just financially, but also emotionally, socially, and health-wise.

What Is the InLife Retirement Index?

The InLife Retirement Index is a pioneering measure developed by the largest Filipino life insurance company, InLife. It assesses retirement readiness through six key factors:

Life Stage

Personal Finances

Health

Pension Program Participation

Retirement Sentiment

Social Support

Unlike other financial assessments, the Index provides a holistic view of what it means to retire comfortably and meaningfully. Using a multi-method approach — including expert interviews with economists and psychologists and a nationwide survey of 1,000 Filipinos aged 18–59 — InLife transformed insights into a score easily understood on a 0–100 scale.

“The Retirement Index shows us that Filipinos need to see retirement in a new light. It’s not just a financial milestone — it’s an emotional, social, and cultural journey,” said Gae L. Martinez, InLife Chief Marketing Officer.

Key Findings: How Retirement-Ready Are Filipinos?

The study uncovered significant differences across generations, income levels, and genders when it comes to retirement readiness in the Philippines:

Generation X leads with a score of 54, thanks to career maturity and family responsibilities that encourage financial planning.

Gen Z trails at 36, showing limited investment habits but strong intentions to plan for their future.

InLife policyholders are more retirement-ready, scoring 62 compared to non-policyholders’ 42.

Health preparedness matters — those with emergency funds and health insurance show greater confidence about their retirement years.

Low pension participation among informal workers and single individuals leaves many vulnerable to financial risks later in life.

Social support networks play a major role, as Filipinos with strong family or community ties tend to be more proactive in planning for retirement.

Gender gaps persist — women scored an average of 45 compared to men’s 49, highlighting the need for more inclusive financial education and planning opportunities.

Retirement Is Not Just About Savings — It’s About Security and Support

Martinez emphasized that the findings from the InLife Retirement Index call for national awareness:

“Retirement readiness requires conversation. At InLife, we are normalizing that conversation so Filipinos can retire confidently, without worries.”

To address this, InLife developed Retire Assure, the first true retirement insurance product in the Philippines. It guarantees a monthly income starting at age 60 or 65 until age 100, ensuring financial security through life’s later years. Policyholders can choose flexible payment terms and enjoy potential cash dividends that grow over time to offset inflation.

For professionals nearing retirement, Retire Assure 2 is available — a two-pay plan that provides guaranteed monthly income until age 100 after just two annual payments. Beneficiaries are assured of receiving the higher of 110% of total premiums paid (minus payouts) or the guaranteed cash value, whichever is greater.

Why Filipinos Need to Talk About Retirement Now

Earlier this year, InLife also published a research paper titled “Retire Without Worries: Your Roadmap to Living Life to the Fullest.” The study highlights the urgent need for early retirement planning amid rising healthcare costs, changing family dynamics, and longer life expectancies.

As the country’s leading Filipino life insurer, InLife continues to empower Filipinos across generations to live “A Lifetime for Good.”
