This initiative directly supports Cyberzone’s #TechWeLikeZoneWeLove commitment: to guide communities toward smarter, safer, and more sustainable tech practices. By bringing e-waste solutions to where people already shop, dine, and spend time, Cyberzone ensures that sustainability becomes a normal part of the tech experience.
Making Good Habits Convenient for All
Launched in June 2024, the program rolled out dedicated e-waste collection bins across participating SM Supermalls nationwide. These drop-off points are positioned in highly visible and accessible mall areas—69 of which are located within or near Cyberzone—ensuring convenience for shoppers who want to do the right thing but often don’t know how or where to start.
With electronics being replaced faster than ever, e-waste has become one of the world’s fastest-growing waste streams. Many households have drawers full of unused chargers, broken phones, outdated routers, and damaged accessories that eventually end up in landfills when not properly disposed of. Cyberzone’s initiative addresses this growing concern by turning responsible disposal into an easy and familiar mall routine.
14,327 kg of E-Waste Properly Collected and Handled
Since the start of the partnership, Cyberzone’s E-Waste Collection Drop Boxes have gathered an impressive 14,327 kilograms of electronic waste across 89 SM Supermalls. These materials were properly collected, segregated, and channeled toward appropriate handling and recycling processes.
The achievement reflects the growing awareness and participation of mallgoers who now recognize the importance of e-waste responsibility. It also shows how accessible solutions—clear drop-off points, consistent placement, and mall-wide visibility—empower communities to make environmentally sound decisions.
Through this system, old tech is prevented from ending up in landfills, where harmful substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium can contaminate soil and water. Instead, disposed electronics are directed toward processes that recover valuable materials, reduce environmental harm, and encourage a circular economy.
A Shared Commitment to Planet-Friendly Tech Practices
“We take pride in being the go-to tech destination for shoppers,” shared Patrick Pacla, Vice President for Cyberzone Operations and Marketing at SM Supermalls. “But as gadgets evolve, so does the need to dispose of old electronics responsibly. Everyone has a role to play, and Cyberzone is committed to making it simpler and safer to do the right thing, so tech does not end up harming the planet.”
Cyberzone’s ongoing collaboration with SM Cares and its telco partners reinforces the program’s goal of long-term scalability. As new SM malls open and Cyberzone branches expand, more e-waste collection bins will be added—bringing the initiative closer to building an #SMWasteFreeFuture.
What Happens to Your Old Gadgets After Drop-Off?
Many shoppers wonder about the journey of their discarded devices. Cyberzone provides transparency through an educational video that shows the step-by-step process of e-waste handling, from drop-off to responsible disposal.
Sustainability That Moves With the Future of Tech
Cyberzone and SM Cares are committed to evolving sustainability efforts alongside rapid technological change. By offering practical solutions to modern waste problems, the partnership empowers communities to adopt better habits while shaping a more responsible tech ecosystem for the next generation.
