Hired on the Spot: How SM Job Fairs are Transforming the Filipino Workforce

For many Filipinos, the journey to finding a stable job is often paved with long commutes, weeks of waiting, and the anxiety of uncertain follow-ups. However, at the recent SM Group Job Fair held at SM City North EDSA, that narrative changed in an instant for hundreds of seekers.

“Hindi ko po akalain na matatanggap ako ngayon (I didn't expect to be accepted today),” shared Felo Garcia, who was hired on the spot (HOTS) as a Sales Associate. “Salamat po SM dahil makaka-provide na ako sa mga pangangailangan ng anak ko at pamilya ko (Thank you, SM, because now I can provide for the needs of my child and my family).”

With 25 participating employers and over a thousand eager applicants, the event saw 236 individuals—or 22% of attendees—hired on the spot. This annual initiative has once again solidified its reputation as a high-impact platform for immediate employment.

A Multidisciplinary Hiring Ecosystem

Led by SM Retail, the mega job fair gathered a diverse array of companies from the SM Group’s ecosystem. The opportunities spanned several industries, including:

  • Retail and Merchandising

  • Malls and Real Estate

  • Food and Beverage

  • Logistics and Supply Chain

  • Education and Banking

The event was designed for high engagement. Unlike digital job boards where resumes can sit in an inbox for weeks, the SM Job Fair facilitated real-time assessments and face-to-face interviews, allowing the recruitment process to move at lightning speed.

Real Impact for Real People

For breadwinners and first-time job seekers, the speed of the "hired on the spot" system is a lifesaver. Joshua Bulauitan, who landed a role as a Sales Clerk, noted the practical relief these events provide. “Kung wala kang trabaho at nagigipit ka na, pumunta ka lang dito—may instant trabaho ka (If you’re jobless and in a tight spot, just come here—you get an instant job).”

This efficiency reflects SM Retail’s strong demand for talent and its ability to absorb a large workforce quickly, ensuring that these fairs result in actual signed contracts rather than just a pile of applications.

A Win-Win for Employers and Talent

Employers also highlighted the strategic advantage of participating in an SM-led event. Lyka Sababan of SM Appliance Center noted that the high foot traffic of the mall naturally draws a massive pool of job-ready talent.

Meanwhile, financial institutions like BDO Life emphasized the quality of the hires. “The candidates we hired from our last job fair here at SM North EDSA have good profiles,” shared Tia Macatlang. “We see that they are now successful financial advisers.”

The One-Stop Shop: SM Government Service Express

One of the biggest hurdles to starting a new job is the paperwork. To solve this, SM integrated the SM Government Service Express into the fair. This "one-stop hub" allowed applicants to process essential pre-employment requirements on-site with agencies such as:

  • SSS (Social Security System)

  • Pag-IBIG Fund

  • PhilHealth

  • PNP (for Police Clearance)

“May hired on the spot ka na, at nandito na rin ang mga government agencies para sa requirements,” explained Adolf Hernandez of PhilHealth QC. This collaboration between the private sector and government offices like DOLE and PESO ensures that the transition from "applicant" to "employee" happens in a single day.

The continued success of these job fairs proves that SM Supermalls has evolved beyond a shopping destination. It has become a platform for opportunity. By bringing together employers, government agencies, and the Filipino workforce under one roof, SM is turning the mall into a place where futures are built and lives are changed.

At SM Supermalls, opportunity isn't just a buzzword—it's a reality you can walk into.
