Water is the lifeblood of our planet, yet our marine ecosystems face an unprecedented threat from plastic pollution and improper waste management. In a powerful demonstration of environmental stewardship, SM Supermalls, through its corporate social responsibility arm, SM Cares, recently mobilized a massive nationwide coastal cleanup to celebrate World Water Day.
Spanning six strategic locations and involving seven participating malls, this initiative reinforced SM’s long-term commitment to a Waste-Free Future. By uniting local communities, mall employees, and environmental advocates, SM Cares is proving that the spirit of Bayanihan is the ultimate tool for ecological preservation.
A Nationwide Movement for Marine Protection
The 2024 World Water Day cleanup was not just a one-day event; it was a coordinated effort to shield our coastlines from the rising tide of debris. The activities took place at key coastal hubs, including:
Luzon: SM City La Union, SM City Urdaneta Central, SM City Tanza, and SM City Daet.
Visayas: SM City Consolacion, SM Seaside City Cebu, and SM J Mall.
By targeting these diverse locations, SM Supermalls ensured that the message of Active Marine Conservation reached both northern and southern provinces, creating a ripple effect of environmental awareness across the archipelago.
Beyond Cleaning: The Power of Waste Segregation Education
What set this year’s coastal cleanup apart was its intense focus on enhanced waste segregation education. SM Cares believes that picking up trash is only half the battle; understanding where that trash comes from—and how to stop it—is the key to long-term success.
During the cleanup, volunteers didn't just bag litter; they participated in a meticulous Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS). Collected materials were sorted into categories:
Recyclable Plastics: Beverage containers and PET bottles.
Single-Use Packaging: Sachets and food wrappers.
Other Debris: Discarded items that pose a direct threat to marine life and coastal habitats.
This hands-on experience allowed participants to see firsthand the impact of "convenience culture" on our oceans. By focusing on sorting and disposal at the source, SM is inspiring Filipinos to adopt more responsible habits in their daily lives.
Aligned with the SM Green Movement
These coastal initiatives are integral components of the SM Green Movement, the overarching sustainability platform of SM Supermalls. The movement aims to harmonize retail operations with environmental protection through proactive, end-to-end solutions.
“Protecting our coastal and marine environments requires a more proactive approach, starting with education and sustaining collective action,” says Engr. Liza Silerio, Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Program Director for Environment and Sustainability at SM Supermalls. “By helping communities understand the importance of proper waste segregation, we hope to inspire long-term behavioral change that benefits both people and the planet.”
Join the Calendar of Conservation
The World Water Day cleanup is just the beginning of a year-long environmental roadmap. SM Cares invites the public to remain engaged and take part in upcoming "Green" milestones:
June: World Oceans Day Cleanup Drives.
September: International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) activities.
November: National Environmental Awareness Month initiatives.
Through these sustained efforts, SM Cares continues to empower Filipinos to become guardians of their own natural resources. Whether it’s through participating in a mall-based recycling program or joining a beach cleanup, every action contributes to a cleaner, bluer tomorrow.
A Greener Future, All For You
At the heart of every SM mall is a commitment to the community. By fostering a culture of Environmental Stewardship, SM Supermalls ensures that the "most-loved mall" is also the most responsible. Protecting our oceans isn't just about the planet—it’s about preserving the beauty and resources of the Philippines for future generations.
