Prioritizing mental health for the youth is critical to building resilient, empowered local communities. To create safe, supportive spaces where young Filipinos can speak openly about their experiences, SM Cares launched the Better Days: A Youth Mental Health Caravan.
This multi-mall initiative—hosted in partnership with Mental Health Youth Hub PH, I AM MAD (Making A Difference), the National Youth Commission (NYC), and the Global Peace Foundation Philippines—aims to provide practical self-care guides, foster peer connections, and offer accessible mental health resources to young people across the Philippines.
Fostering Safe Spaces and Peer Connections for Youth Well-Being
The nationwide caravan kicked off at the SM North EDSA Skydome, followed by scheduled regional activations at the SM Center Pulilan Atrium and SM City Molino Cinema 1. Under the theme "A Space for Sharing of Hope, Creating Connections, and Building Better Communities," the event gives young participants a platform to discuss mental health challenges without stigma.
The caravan was powered by the Global Youth Summit and builds upon a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between SM Cares, the National Youth Commission (represented by Commissioner Undersecretary Joseph Francisco “Jeff” Ortega), and Mental Health Youth Hub PH to advance youth well-being programs nationwide.
"At SM Cares, we believe a stronger nation begins with young people who know that their lives matter, that their voices have value, and that there are people and communities ready to stand beside them," stated Joaquin San Agustin, Executive Vice President for Marketing at SM Supermalls. "When young people feel heard, valued, and supported, they become better equipped to face challenges, care for others, and take part in building the communities they want to live in."
Interactive Workshops, Advocacy, and Resource Sharing
The Better Days mental health caravan features a dynamic mix of interactive panels, group discussions, and wellness activities tailored for the youth. High-profile advocates and media personalities, including broadcaster Kuya Kim Atienza, joined the SM North EDSA leg to share practical insights on managing stress, building emotional resilience, and practicing daily self-care.
Key objectives of the multi-mall mental health initiative include:
Destigmatizing Mental Health: Normalizing open conversations about emotional struggles, anxiety, and youth burnout.
Building Support Networks: Connecting attendees with youth-led mental health organizations and professional assistance channels.
Empowering Everyday Resilience: Providing actionable self-care routines, mindfulness tools, and peer-support techniques.
Encouraging Community Action: Motivating young leaders to champion mental health awareness within their respective schools and barangays.
Strategic Public-Private Partnerships for Community Impact
Through strategic collaborations with government agencies like the NYC and grassroots non-profits, SM Cares leverages the vast commercial footprint of SM Supermalls to bring essential social development programs directly to local youth.
