Designed to honor businesses that have radically improved their operational models and overall sustainability performance over time, the Transformation Category recognized SM Prime’s impressive, multi-year shift toward a true closed-loop, circular economy.

1. From Behavior Change to Systemic Transformation
The journey toward a sustainable future begins with everyday habits. Launched in 2024 at the iconic SM Mall of Asia, the SM Waste Free Future initiative set out to standardize waste segregation across all SM properties nationwide.
Grounded in behavioral change theories, SM Prime conducted extensive on-ground observations of daily waste generation and assessed its existing property management systems. The result was the deployment of an intuitive, standardized Three-Bin Waste System:
Recyclable: For paper, plastics, and metals that can re-enter manufacturing streams.
Disposable: For non-recyclable materials diverted for alternative processing.
Compostable: For organic waste destined for nutrient recovery.
By making waste separation simple, clear, and accessible for millions of mallgoers, tenants, and employees daily, SM Prime successfully turned responsible disposal into a seamless, everyday habit.
2. Real Impact in Numbers: Achieving an 80% Landfill Diversion Rate
Making recycling accessible is step one; ensuring waste actually stays out of landfills is where true circularity happens. Just one year after launching the program, SM Prime achieved an extraordinary 80% non-hazardous waste landfill diversion rate in 2025.
Achieving this level of diversion required substantial strategic investment in waste-processing infrastructure. A vital cornerstone of this ecosystem is the SM GUUN Environmental Company, Inc. (SGECI) facility located in Consolacion, Cebu.
This state-of-the-art waste-to-fuel facility converts non-recyclable disposable waste into Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF). This alternative fuel source directly powers major cement manufacturers, such as Holcim and APO Cement, keeping valuable resources out of landfills while reducing industrial dependence on fossil fuels.
In 2025 alone, SGECI processed over 6,000 metric tons of waste, expanding its collaborative network to include regional partners and local businesses like Asia Brewery, PetValue, Nature Springs, and Concreat to recover, process, and repurpose materials.
3. Turning Sustainability into a Community Movement
At its core, SM Prime’s circularity framework relies on collective human action. Through SM Cares—the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls—the group actively engages surrounding communities, youth organizations, and local government units in hands-on environmental advocacy.
A standout example of this community mobilization was the International Coastal Cleanup event, which mobilized a record-breaking 48,000 volunteers, making it one of the largest gatherings of coastal cleanup advocates in the country.
