Powering a Greener Tomorrow: How SM Prime is Leading the Solar Revolution in the Philippines

In an era where energy security and environmental preservation are paramount, SM Prime Holdings Inc. (SM Prime) is setting a new benchmark for sustainable urban development. By transforming vast rooftop spaces into clean energy powerhouses, SM Prime is not only reducing the load on the national power grid but also ensuring that more electricity remains available for the local communities it serves.

From its first pioneering installation to a nationwide network of solar-powered shopping centers, the SM Group has officially become the largest generator of clean energy among property developers in the Philippines.

A Decade of Solar Leadership: From SM North EDSA to Nationwide Impact

The journey toward a sustainable "mall-going" experience began in 2014 with the landmark installation of solar panels at SM City North EDSA. What started as a singular green initiative has grown into a massive renewable energy infrastructure.

Today, the clean energy generated by SM Supermalls is substantial enough to power an entire city. To put this in perspective, the solar capacity across the SM portfolio could provide electricity for a city as large as Mabalacat, Pampanga, or Mandaue, Cebu.

“The use of solar power enables SM Supermalls to elevate the service we provide to our customers by embedding sustainability into our daily operations,” says SM Supermalls President Steven Tan. “When Filipinos visit their most-loved SM malls, they are entering a space that actively helps preserve the environment.”
Maximizing Space: 65 Hectares of Renewable Potential

Efficiency is at the heart of SM Prime’s sustainability strategy. Currently, the SM Group utilizes 65 hectares of rooftop space for solar panel installations. This footprint is roughly equivalent to the size of the entire SM Mall of Asia (MOA) complex.

By converting idle rooftop real estate into active energy assets, SM is effectively "maximizing space to make room for energy efficiency." This proactive approach reduces the carbon footprint of retail operations while lowering the demand for fossil-fuel-based electricity.

Innovative Integration at MOA Sky

At the MOA Sky within the SM Mall of Asia, solar technology is no longer hidden on rooftops; it is part of the architecture. Solar panels have been seamlessly integrated into the walkways that wrap around the property. These panels serve a dual purpose:

Sustainable Power: Generating enough energy to run 1,000 escalators daily or power 1,800 homes for a full month.

Customer Comfort: Providing a shaded overhead covering for mallgoers enjoying a stroll along the bay.
Functional Aesthetics at SM City Bicutan

Innovation continues at SM City Bicutan, where the "Sky Garden" features solar-powered parasols. These are not merely decorative elements; they are high-tech collectors that capture energy during the day.

Efficiency: Just three hours of daytime charging provides five hours of nighttime illumination.

Impact: These parasols power the evening lighting for the garden and surrounding establishments, eliminating the need for grid-tied electricity until the mall closes.
The Broader Impact: Sustainability for the Filipino Community

SM Prime’s investment in renewable energy is a testament to its commitment to Responsible Resource Management. By generating its own power, SM ensures that more energy resources remain available for the surrounding residential and industrial areas, particularly during peak hours when the grid is most stressed.

As the Philippines continues to face energy challenges, the role of private corporations in decentralized energy production becomes critical. SM’s "mallmaxxed" approach to sustainability proves that large-scale commercial success and environmental stewardship can go hand-in-hand.

A Vision for the Future

For SM Supermalls, being "your most-loved mall" means more than just providing world-class retail and dining. It means being a proactive partner in the country’s green transition.

"We believe it is up to us to be proactive in enriching the mall-going experiences of Filipinos by investing in seamless, sustainable solutions," Tan explains. Through the massive deployment of rooftop solar power systems, SM Prime is ensuring that the natural resources of the Philippines are preserved for generations to come.

Next time you visit an SM mall, remember: you aren't just shopping—you’re stepping into the future of Philippine renewable energy.
