Less Walking, More Convenience: My SM Is Changing the EDSA Commute

For millions of Filipinos, navigating Metro Manila’s main arterial highway—EDSA—is a daily routine defined by long walks, congested footbridges, unpredictable weather, and tedious transfers between public transport lines. But what if your everyday journey could be safer, shorter, and considerably more comfortable?

In an ambitious move to improve urban mobility, SM Supermalls is expanding its focus beyond retail, entertainment, and shared community spaces. Under its My SM Transportation initiative, the mall operator is actively reimagining pedestrian circulation and commuter access across Metro Manila's busiest transport hubs.

Through key infrastructure projects—such as the newly completed SM Megamall EDSA Busway Concourse and Pedestrian Bridge and the upcoming SM North EDSA MRT-7 Link—SM is transforming how everyday commuters travel, bringing safety and seamless accessibility to the forefront.

The SM Megamall EDSA Busway Concourse: A Safer, Weatherproof Route

If you’ve ever had to brave the old MRT-3 footbridge during peak hours just to reach the EDSA Bus Carousel, you know how challenging that trek could be. Long queues, crowded pathways, and exposure to heat or sudden downpours were part of the daily grind.

The completion of the SM Megamall EDSA Busway Link changes the game for Ortigas commuters. Connecting SM Megamall directly to the Ortigas station of the EDSA Bus Carousel, this elevated, fully covered pedestrian bridge significantly shortens the walk between the mall and the bus platform.

Key benefits of the new link include:

  • All-Weather Protection: The fully enclosed design shields pedestrians from scorching heat and heavy rains.

  • Inclusive Mobility: Equipped with accessible ramps and elevators, the concourse ensures smooth transit for senior citizens, pregnant women, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and commuters carrying heavy luggage.

  • Direct Access: Commuters can safely board or alight northbound buses heading toward Monumento or southbound buses traveling to the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX).

By creating a spacious, well-ventilated, and illuminated corridor, SM has turned a high-stress transfer point into a clean, safe, and efficient walk.

Looking Ahead: The SM North EDSA MRT-7 Link

Building on the success of the Megamall busway connection, SM is also making headways in Quezon City with the ongoing construction of the SM North EDSA–MRT 7 Link.

This upcoming elevated walkway will grant commuters direct, seamless access to the Unified Grand Central Station (Common Station)—the critical transit hub connecting MRT-3, LRT-1, the Metro Manila Subway, and the soon-to-open MRT-7 line. Commuters will be able to transfer between train lines and nearby commercial establishments without ever having to step down to street level or brave harsh weather conditions.

Public-Private Partnerships for Commuter Welfare

These infrastructure projects were developed in close coordination with key government entities, including the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

By integrating private infrastructure with public transit routes, SM Supermalls demonstrates how thoughtful urban planning can directly ease the burdens of public transportation.

Reimagining the Daily Journey at "My SM"

For SM Supermalls, these improvements are rooted in a simple philosophy: everyday destinations should cater to the real, practical needs of the communities they serve. Commuting isn't just a way to get from Point A to Point B—it is a major part of everyday life.

By replacing long, congested walks with covered, well-lit, and accessible pathways, SM is turning commuting into a more human-centered experience. Whether you're heading to work, going home, or stopping by for dinner and shopping, your journey through EDSA is officially getting a well-deserved upgrade.
