Timpani or kettledrums belong to the percussion family of musical instruments. It is a type of a drum which consists of a skin called the head stretched over a large bowl usually made of copper. It is played by striking the head with a drum stick called timpani stick or timpani mallet. Nowadays, timpanis are used in various types of musical ensembles like concert bands, marching bands and orchestras.
