Every day is Earth Day at SM Supermalls!

On April 22, 2023, SM Supermalls, in partnership with its CSR arm SM Cares, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), local government units, and schools and organizations celebrated Earth Day at SM malls nationwide. The event, which gathered 1700 children and 350 employee volunteers, aimed to raise awareness among families about the importance of taking care of the environment and investing in the youth's future.

The theme for this year's Earth Day celebration was "Invest In Our Planet, Invest In Our Youth," which emphasized the role of young people in protecting the planet and building a sustainable future. SM Supermalls and SM Cares lined up various activities that engaged children and their families in environmental education and action, such as Children's Storytelling, Coloring, and Sustainability Tours.

The Earth Day event was a part of SM's commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. SM Cares, the CSR arm of SM Supermalls, has been implementing various programs that promote environmental sustainability and social development. These programs include the Green Film Festival, Plastic-Free Mall, and Green Retail Agenda.

Earth Day is a global event that highlights environmental issues and calls for action to protect the planet. The event started in 1970 as a response to various environmental problems like pollution and resource depletion. Today, Earth Day is considered the largest environmental movement worldwide, with millions of people participating in celebrations every year.

The Earth Day celebration at SM malls nationwide showed that even small actions can make a big difference in protecting the environment. By educating and engaging children and their families, SM Supermalls and its partners are helping to build a more sustainable and resilient future for all.

Ms. Liza B. Silerio, the SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and SM Cares Program Director for the Environment, emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing the climate crisis, stating that every day should be Earth Day at SM. The mall featured the works of Manuel Baldemor, a multi-awarded Filipino artist, sculptor, and illustrator, whose art showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines. Baldemor's works were used to inspire the Earth Day program at SM, reflecting a long-time partnership with SM Cares programs for the environment, starting with his design of SM's first eco bags in 2007.

As part of the Earth Day program, SM Supermalls hosted various activities to raise awareness about environmental sustainability. A special Earth Day story based on Baldemor's artworks was shared during the storytelling activity, inspiring children to adopt sustainable habits in their daily lives. In the coloring activity section, participants were given art materials and a selection of Baldemor's drawings to color in. The malls used recycled materials in designing the activity areas.

To cap off the celebration, a sustainability tour was held where participants were guided to one or more of the mall's eco-friendly facilities, such as EV charging stations, water recycling treatment plants, waste segregation bins, Plastic Waste Collection booths, E-waste Collection bins, and various bicycle amenities. These activities aimed to encourage everyone, particularly the youth, to protect the environment and live sustainably.

SM City Fairview recently hosted the DENR Gawad Taga-ilog Awards photo exhibit to recognize the winning local government units for their role in protecting Metro Manila's waterways. The exhibit showcased the importance of collaborating with the public sector in driving environmental programs forward. As part of the event, the DENR provided 800 tree seedlings to participants and customers through a DENR Community Pan-TREE at various SM malls including SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, SM North EDSA, SM City Fairview, SM City Novaliches, SM City Marikina, SM City East Ortigas, and SM Southmall. This initiative aimed to encourage more people to contribute to a sustainable future by planting more trees.

Moreover, the Quezon City Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Department also participated in promoting the city's Trash to Cashback program at the event. This program aims to encourage Quezon City residents to become Eco Warriors by promoting recycling and proper waste management. Through this program, residents can earn cash incentives by properly disposing of their waste and recyclables. By promoting this program, the department hopes to raise awareness and inspire more people to take action in protecting the environment.

Overall, these initiatives reflect SM Supermalls' commitment to driving sustainability efforts and promoting environmental stewardship. By collaborating with the public sector and empowering individuals and communities to take action, SM Supermalls hopes to contribute to a greener, more equitable future for everyone.

SM Supermalls is committed to promoting sustainable living in the Philippines through various initiatives. In addition to the Earth Day celebration, the company has a number of programs aimed at caring for the environment. These include the Trash to Cash Recycling Market, held on the first Friday and Saturday of each month, as well as daily water recycling systems and environmental campaigns such as the Green Film Festival, Green Retail Agenda, and International Coastal Cleanup Drive.

SM Cares is the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Prime Holdings, responsible for promoting sustainability and community development. SM Cares has several advocacies, including programs for Women and Breastfeeding Mothers, Persons with Disabilities, Senior Citizens, and Children and Youth. Additionally, SM Cares has the Bike-Friendly SM initiative and Programs on Environment.

One recent event hosted by SM City Fairview was the DENR Gawad Taga-ilog Awards photo exhibit, which recognized winning local government units leading in protecting Metro Manila's waterways. The event also featured the DENR Community Pan-TREE, which provided 800 tree seedlings to participants and customers at several SM malls.
