Ballet Manila’s Don Quixote 2025: Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim Bring World-Class Ballet to Manila

Performing a ballet role repeatedly is both an honor and a challenge. For many dancers, it can either deepen their mastery or risk becoming routine. But for international ballet stars Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim, every performance is an opportunity to rediscover the role with passion, precision, and artistry.

This August, Manila audiences will be treated to their brilliance as the two Mariinsky Ballet principal dancers take the stage as Kitri and Basilio in Don Quixote. The performances run from August 22 to 24, 2025 at the Aliw Theater in Pasay City, serving as the grand finale of Ballet Manila’s Pearl Year season.

World-Class Dancers from the Mariinsky Ballet

Renata and Kimin are both principal dancers with the Mariinsky Ballet, one of the world’s most prestigious ballet companies. Achieving principal status at Mariinsky is no small feat—it signifies mastery of technique, artistry, and stage presence on the international stage.

For Renata, Kitri is a role she has danced countless times. Yet, she insists that every performance must feel brand new:

“I have to prepare as if it’s my first time. Otherwise, the performance risks becoming mechanical. We must always look at each other as partners, pay attention to details, and discover something new every time.”

She also admires Kimin’s meticulousness as a partner. “He notices the smallest details, and it elevates every rehearsal and performance,” she adds.

Kimin, a multi-award-winning dancer trained at the Mariinsky Theater, describes Basilio as “the color red that shimmers”—a vibrant and joyous character that he enjoys portraying.

“Technique is important, but it must be combined with emotion. Schooling gave me the foundation—jumps, fouettés, acting—but the real challenge is offering the audience a piece of myself onstage.”

Rediscovering Don Quixote in Manila

Though the pair has danced Don Quixote together many times internationally, both agree that the experience is never the same.

“Renata is always so emotional, and every performance feels different,” says Kimin. “As her partner, I’m constantly surprised. It keeps me engaged and never bored.”

For Renata, this marks her return to the Philippine stage, having performed as Giselle with Ballet Manila in 2024. “Giselle was dramatic and heavy, while Don Quixote is playful and happy,” she explains. “I’m excited to show a lighter, more spirited side of myself to Filipino audiences.”

Kimin, meanwhile, is performing in Manila for the very first time. His hope is for audiences to carry the memory long after the final bow:

“It’s not only about clapping or shouting ‘bravo.’ It’s about leaving the theater with a bright emotion, a memory they’ll treasure.”

A Milestone for Ballet Manila 2025

For Ballet Manila, bringing in Renata and Kimin is a testament to their commitment to world-class productions. CEO and artistic director Lisa Macuja Elizalde shares:

“Closing our Pearl Year with Renata and Kimin in Don Quixote is truly fitting. They embody the highest standard of ballet, and through this performance, we reaffirm our mission to bring world-class ballet to Filipino audiences.”
