Two of the world’s most celebrated ballet artists are stepping onto the Philippine stage once again to give local audiences a breathtaking display of international talent, technical mastery, and fiery artistic passion. This August, Ballet Manila proudly brings back world-renowned principal dancers Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim of the prestigious Mariinsky Ballet. Together, they will breathe dramatic new life into the timeless nineteenth-century classic, La Bayadère, live at the Aliw Theater.
This sensational engagement solidifies Ballet Manila’s long-standing mission to bring world-class classical dance directly to Filipino theatergoers, providing a rare opportunity to witness internationally acclaimed prima ballerinas and male principals perform locally.
A Triumphant Return to the Philippine Stage
The upcoming staging follows last year’s sold-out production of Don Quixote, which also featured the formidable duo and drew glowing praise from classical dance enthusiasts across the country.
“We are very excited to welcome Renata and Kimin back to Ballet Manila,” said Lisa Macuja Elizalde, founder and artistic director of Ballet Manila. “Their performances in Don Quixote were truly unforgettable, and the response from Filipino audiences was overwhelming. It was a delight to see our theatergoers embrace them so warmly, and I know many have been eagerly anticipating their return.”
Their dynamic stage partnership is backed by immense chemistry and international prestige. Back in 2016, Shakirova and Kim captured global attention by winning Russia-Kultura TV’s acclaimed Grand Ballet competition, establishing their natural synergy as a lead couple.
Meet the Mariinsky Principal Dancers
Both guest artists bring extraordinary credentials to this landmark production:
Renata Shakirova
Recognized as a prodigy early in her training, the Tashkent-born prima ballerina has rapidly climbed the ranks of the Mariinsky Ballet. Celebrated worldwide for her exquisite musicality, dramatic expressiveness, and commanding stage presence, Shakirova reached a career milestone as a recipient of the 2025 Benois de la Danse award—frequently referred to in the dance community as the "Ballet Oscar."
Kimin Kim
Making history as the first foreign male principal dancer in the legendary history of the Mariinsky Ballet, Kimin Kim started his formal ballet training relatively late, around age ten. Despite the late start, his gravity-defying athleticism, razor-sharp precision, and soaring jumps have made him one of the most sought-after male dancers performing today.
The Tragic Romance of La Bayadère
Choreographed originally by Marius Petipa, La Bayadère remains one of classical ballet’s most grandiose and emotionally charged masterpieces. Set against the vibrant backdrop of ancient India, the story follows a heartbreaking melodramatic love triangle that spans both the mortal world and the afterlife.
The narrative centers on Nikiya, a devoted temple dancer (bayadère), and Solor, a noble warrior sworn to love her. Their romance is imperiled when the powerful High Brahmin—secretly enamored with Nikiya—discovers their bond. Intent on eliminating his rival, the High Brahmin informs the Rajah of Solor's secret affair. However, the plot takes a tragic turn when the Rajah decrees that Nikiya, rather than Solor, must die to secure Solor’s arranged marriage to his daughter, Princess Gamzatti.
At Russia's Mariinsky Theatre, Kim regularly portrays Solor, while Shakirova has showcased her immense versatility by mastering both the compassionate role of Nikiya and the imperious role of Gamzatti.
“Renata and Kim’s extensive experience with La Bayadère promises Filipino audiences a deeply moving and authentic interpretation of Marius Petipa’s enduring masterpiece,” added Macuja Elizalde. “We hope that by the end of the run, every audience member leaves with a renewed passion for classical ballet.”
