Recognizing the urgency to support both its customers and surrounding communities, SM Supermalls stepped forward with a strong commitment to advancing Active Mobility in the Philippines. What began as a crisis response organically evolved into a long-term sustainability initiative. Today, SM Supermalls is regarded as one of the country’s most consistent and extensive advocates of bike-friendly spaces, with comprehensive programs implemented across all of its malls nationwide.
This commitment culminated in a historic milestone at the 2025 Mobility Awards, where SM earned an unprecedented 34 citations for its industry-leading efforts in promoting safe, inclusive, and sustainable travel.
From Pandemic Support to a Nationwide Bike Movement
“What began as a heartfelt initiative to support bikers during COVID has now become an integrated bike program spanning every single SM mall in the country,” shared Joaquin San Agustin, SM Supermalls Executive Vice President for Marketing. “Active Mobility plays a crucial role not just in preserving the environment but in enriching the lives of every Filipino. As part of our mission, SM will continue creating spaces where movement is safe, accessible, and inclusive for everyone.”
The early days of lockdown highlighted a clear need: safe passages and parking for cyclists who depended on their bikes for groceries, medicine, and work. Responding to this, SM Supermalls—together with its Corporate Social Responsibility arm SM Cares, its mall operations teams, and thriving local biking groups—ramped up efforts to create a supportive ecosystem for cyclists.
Building a Bike-Friendly Philippines Through Collaboration
According to Mina Kahn, SM Division Head and Assistant Vice President for Transportation Management, “It started with us setting up parking spots exclusive to bikes to help cyclists who relied on SM for essentials. When their numbers tripled even after lockdown, we knew we had to do more.”
This led to a nationwide replication of bike-friendly infrastructure, including:
Secure bike parking areas
Repair stations equipped with essential tools
Cushioned bike racks using upcycled tires
Integrated, intuitive bike lanes surrounding mall properties
Signages and markers for safer cycling routes
Community activities and events promoting the cycling lifestyle
Cycling groups also embraced SM malls as hubs for gatherings, fun rides, and weekend meetups. Many mall tenants even adjusted operating hours to accommodate early-morning cyclists—further proving how biking had become not just a mode of transport, but a lifestyle embraced by Filipinos.
SM’s Award-Winning Impact on Active Transport
SM’s ongoing initiatives led to 34 Mobility Awards in 2025, including:
1 Gold Award
11 Silver Awards
22 Bronze Awards
These honors reaffirm SM’s leadership in shaping sustainable mobility nationwide. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) also recognized SM for driving innovation in active transport through its Pedal Power 2025 initiative and its Sustainable Mobility and Bike-Friendly Program, both honored as notable contributions from the private sector.
