Easy Steps To Keep Your Eyes Healthy

Your eyesight is one of the most important senses of your body as 80% of what you perceive comes through them. Don't take your eyes for granted and protect them by practicing preventative care to maintain good vision and eye health, and reduce the odds of blindness and vision loss.

Consult an eye care professional

You don’t have to wait too long to get your eyes checked. If you’re having constant migraines or noticed some change in your vision, then it is time to consult an eye care professional. Only these people can identify and validate if you have serious vision problems, such glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy.
Wear your prescribed glasses or contact lenses
After consultation, your eye care professional may prescribe usage of graded lens or contact lens, depending on the result of your eye exam. Once you start wearing your prescription glasses or contact lenses, it would improve your vision. However, you must see to it that your eyeglasses lenses are always up-to-date and make sure that your contact lenses aren’t expired.
Wear sunglasses when outdoors
Protect your eyes from UVA and UVB rays by wearing sunglasses. Too much UV exposure boosts your chances of cataracts and macular degeneration. A polarized sunglass does a good job on this as it helps in protecting your eyes and reduces glare.
Take regular breaks while doing computer work
When you work at your computer for long periods or have some tasks that mostly involve your eyes, take some short breaks. To avoid your eyes from getting too fatigued, rest them every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds, or get up at least every 2 hours and take a 15-minute break.

Quit smoking
Smoking is detrimental to your health, not just that it affects your lungs and heart but it also makes your eyes more likely prone to cataracts, damage to your optic nerve, and macular degeneration.

Eat healthy foods
Good eye health starts with eating healthy. Nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E can help eradicate age-related vision complications like macular degeneration and cataracts. You can get these nutrients by eating green leafy vegetables, fruits and foods high in vitamins C, E, and beta carotene.

Taking care of your eyes is vital as it contributes to improved athletic ability, better driving skills, and enhanced learning and comprehension. So, better take these easy steps to maintain a good and healthy eyesight.
