On February 25, 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southeast Türkiye and northwest Syria, causing widespread destruction and claiming many lives. The epicenter was reported to be near the town of Ceylanpinar on the border between the two countries.
The earthquake was followed by a magnitude 6.3 aftershock that hit southern Türkiye on February 28, leading to additional casualties and damage.
The disaster caused buildings to collapse, roads to be blocked, and electricity and communication lines to be cut off. Rescue and relief efforts were hindered by the difficult terrain, harsh weather conditions, and the ongoing conflict in the region.
The international community responded with aid and assistance, and many countries offered their support to help the affected people. On February 27, 2023, SM Foundation Inc. (SMFI) extended aid to the earthquake-stricken countries of Türkiye and Syria through the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), in a show of solidarity.
Represented by Connie Angeles, Executive Director of SM Foundation's Health and Medical Programs, SMFI donated 200 gasoline generators to the PRC to provide power to the affected areas.
In addition, SM's social good arm also provided Php5 million to support earthquake victims.
The aid came after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southeast Türkiye and northwest Syria, followed by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that struck southern Türkiye, resulting in additional casualties and damage.
PRC Chairperson Dick Gordon accepted the donation from Connie Angeles, as witnessed by PRC Governor Ernesto Isla and PRC Secretary General Dr. Gwen Pang.
