Reflections : Can you detach your life from your earthy possessions?



Here is a story of a rich man who wants to have an eternal life in heaven....

A Rich Man Comes to Jesus (Mark 10:17-22Luke 18:18-23)

"....Just then a man came up to Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what good deed should I do to have eternal life?” Jesus asked him, “Why ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you want to get into that life, you must keep the commandments.” 

The young man asked him, “Which ones?”
Jesus said, “‘You must not murder, you must not commit adultery, you must not steal, you must not give false testimony, honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘you must love your neighbor as yourself.’' 

The young man told him, “I have kept all of these. What do I still lack?”
Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell what you own and give the money to the destitute, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come back and follow me.” But when the young man heard this statement he went away sad, because he had many possessions..."

It is really hard to give up our possessions on earth as they are our assurance of living a decent life on earth. But the story don't really tell us to give away everything, it would like to remind us that, while we are busy making a living every now and then, we must be busier, building our own treasures in heaven. 

According to the homily this Sunday morning, we should use our wealth to help others. We must learn to control our possessions and not let our possessions control us. Money is not the root of all evil, love for money is....
